I very rarely see films. I think I saw two or three last year. That includes films on tv.

My favorites,
La Vita È Bella.
Anything with Adam Sandler in it.
The Alien series.
Anything Star Trek.
Star Wars minus Episode 1 and 2.
Blinkende Lygter
Jurassic Park
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Actually most things with Jack Nicholson
Most films with Arnold Schwarzenegger, despite the fact that he's republican.
oh but I hated Junior.
Kindergarten Cop was filmed in the PDO so I must love it.
The Doors

That's really all I can think of. I'm sure I forgot something.

The only good holocaust film was La Vita È Bella.

What happens nowadays, is every year some director makes some film about the holocaust, and the only difference is that each year it gets longer and bloodier.

La Vita È Bella all the way

JoY
11-21-2004, 05:51 AM
you know I adore 'la Vita è Bella' with all my heart. it captured so much of the pain & horror in the second world war, without being all that horrifying. a very touching, beautiful film. (<3 yes, it's one of my all time favorite movies) the humour in it has such a great effect, because a war of course isn't oh so humorous. but it's the ultimate sign of good spirit & love, which especially shows in the most difficult circumstances. somehow the movie reminds me so much of my grandfather & the way he fought himself through the war with the help of a lot of love for & from his wife, daughter of a NSB-er, stepdaughter of a female SS-er. but let's be honest; second world war wasn't a love story. it were the days humour died & cruel nazi-jokes took over (the movie also shows this, by the way). there was hardly anyone, captured by nazis, that could keep his/her head up. 'la Vita è Bella' isn't very realistic & that makes it in a strange way an ultimate comfort for those, who will always wonder what cruelty familymembers had to go through in camps.

still there seems to be a hunger for truly horrifying movies all over the world to bring us as close to second world war as we can get, maybe to possibly understand? it can't really be understood, I believe; hate is as irrational as love. but as for a horrifying film, to make at least the horror & the complete lack of humour & humanity slightly understood, 'the Pianist' certainly wins every Isa-prize in that aspect (bit personal). it's no comfort, 'the Pianist' is a slap in the face with a very impressing right hand. I love it for it's honesty & music. yeah, the music was awesome. I've never in my life loved Chopin so much. & as for it's honesty; I'll never know all the things the nazis exactly did to my grandfather (I only know they pulled out the nails on his feet & hands), but whatever it was... I realise very well it shouldn't ever happen to anyone. not ever again. everyone knows this, but few realise it.

I watched the pianist. It was crap. It seemed like sensationalism at it's highest. I despise films designed in such a way, and then obviously designed and put together.

La Vita È Bella is much better, because you fall in love with that goofy ol' man who makes everything fun. He's fantastic and he'll live forever. And then he's shot and the camera's forget about him. They don't go to his body, they don't play it in slow motion. None of that would be realistic. He's just gone and we have to finish the movie without him. And that's why La Vita è Bella will always be better in my opinion.

you know I adore 'la Vita è Bella' with all my heart. it captured so much of the pain & horror in the second world war, without being all that horrifying. a very touching, beautiful film.
That's my crazy, fun Italian film!! I remembered it was something vita, something bella, but didn't remember the whole name correctly.

Anyway, yes, an amazing film. The last time I saw it was in Philosophy class (moral philosophy) last spring. I can't remember the exact reason why the teacher showed it to us, but it probably had something to due with the ending, how you just keep thinking "Okay, he'll come out soon... Okay, he'll come out in just a moment... Just a moment now... Come on..." because your brain just refuses to accept the fact there isn't a happy ending for this feller. After the movie I kept thinking of ways that maybe, just maybe he made it, but that just shows you how good the movie is.

Also the fact that what happened feels so WRONG that after decades and decades, people are still making movies about it. It just fights against our moral, the whole thing.

One of my favourite things were the little riddles Guido kept telling. I loved those, even though I could never figure them out on my own. :]

oh those were fantastic indeed. I don't remember what they were, even though I've sworn to myself I'd remember. I loved the way he called his wife "principessa" & do you remember the green horse at the wedding, with all the anti-semitic signs??

Yes. ;D

All those details are so lovely. One of the riddles was: "When you speak my name, I disappear."

There might've been something else to it, but that's what I remember of it.

About the World War II..
I had to see "Schindler's List" to do a school paper, and it was a great movie about it.. I also read "The Diary of a young girl" , about Anne Frank. Really good book.

I bet Anne Frank & Vincent van Gogh are watching us from somewhere full of disbelief about how popular they've became after their deaths. together with tulips, clogs & windmills, they almost define the Netherlands.

"Anne Frank war nicht allein" (Anne Frank wasn't alone) is also an intriguing book. it's full of stories of Jews, who survived the Second World War one way, or another. I can recommend it to anyone. my grandfather's story is in it, too.=) the most amazing one of all, if you ask me. but I'm not so very objective.

I'm sorry to say, but the book was probably one of the most boring books I've ever read. Well, started. I never finished so it's possible the really exciting stuff happens in the end.

I don't think teenage diaries are interesting for anyone else but the person who wrote them. Some people write diaries like "what I thought about today", huge philosophical musings and all that, but my diary has very little of that, it's usually just the usual "what I did today" and "what I thought of books I read/movies I saw/cds I bought", angst, ramblings about emotions and feelings toward people I have in my life.

I just felt like I didn't know enough when reading through her diary. I was always all "Who is this person she mentioned?"

About Anne Frank's diary...
I'm not saying that it was an exciting book. But it is intersting to know what a girl in that time, on that house thought about the world... Anyway, I like to read a lot..
I like to wrote some things, and I think that can be a diary... But I don't like to make any relatories..
