This thread is obviously needs to exist. Who has HL2? I started playing around 6:30 AM on Tuesday and beat it today (Thursday) at around noon. It was really a great game, although as many reviewers have mentioned, the story is rather disjointed. I hope Valve periodically releases maps over steam to extend the single player campaign, and possibly explain certain aspects of the plot further. The G-Man remains pretty much a mystery, sorry if you consider that a spoiler. The gravity gun fucking rocks, especially toward the last levels, but I won't tell you why. So anyways, share your opinions etc. Lack of multiplayer is a bummer, hopefully they add some.

I take it you don't play any of the other mods online? I'd buy the game myself if my graphics card could actually hack it but oh well - completed all the others.

I play counter-strike source. I don't like how there's no HL2 deathmatch though. I'd love to use the grav gun online.

The original deathmatch over LAN was such a laugh, just a cs player now and again myself, my serious days are behind me....anyone else out there still play? - remember having a game once with someone on here from liverpool but the names gone...

Yeah, but how smooth does it play? Doubt you can pull it off at max with your system. How much did you score in the video stress test in CS source? I had 22.16 with the highest settings. And I mean the highest. At 1280X1024.

Yes, that's sick.

I don't know anything about computers and games I just really like to play Unreal Tournement. I had this period where I played Unreal all the time. Its actually such a stupid game, shoot- kill. And oh so easy! Just make sure you have a sniper and a hidden place, Headshot! I was addicted to it in a weird way, after a week Its starting to get kinda boring though.

Um on 1280x1024 with AA off or set to low numbers, using trilinear filtering, with everything on highest excpet reflections set to world (or whatever is the middle setting) I got like 67 fps average. Maybe I'm forgetting about some settings but It sounds right to me.

Ok maybe I was talking about my 1024x768 results :o
My numbers were actually a little lower:

http://www.skratch-zero.com/crap/stresstestresults.jpg

Also, I alt-tabbed out of that, opened photoshop, saved the first shot, and closed photoshop/alt-tabbed back in before running the stress test, so maybe that slowed it down a little, I dunno. Either way, I'm happy with that average.

Pretty nice numbers. The filtering and the antialiasing modes could make a difference, but it's very nice overall. I'd have to install my game onto the boot drive if I plan to take further tests.

I really recommend this game to anybody. It's a lot of fun, and very exciting.

I'm waiting for some sort of expansion to come out over steam... A friend pointed out to me that Shepard's story (opposing forces) was open to expansion as well. Or maybe they'll do Op Forces HL2 style and make you play as a combine or something... who knows?

SUCH a good good game; I wasn't sure how they'd manage to make a game that lived up to HL1 but they did. Granted, it's no where near as good as the original but hey, it looks great; especially for the relatively low specifications it requires. Those damn annoying little poisonous bugs that attack you in the town outside the new Black Mesa scared the bejesus out of me at first. And still kind of do.

And yes, the Gravity Gun kicks ass. I'm disappointed by the smg's you get off the militrary though - so frustratingly inaccurate. HL2 is the only game I've ever played where the lowly pistol is the most effective shooting weapon in the game.

Pistols generally seem to be one of the most accurate kinds of guns in first person shooters. At least the ones I play, not that I'm up to date. I'm still playing half life 1. Which reminds me, I really feel like playing it again. I'll text Phil tonight I think.

In Timesplitters, dual pistols are my weapon of choice in most situations.

I'm biased anyway, as I always fall for the romance of using pistols. In Unreal Tournament, Andy + Dual Pistols = Win.

Yeah, I'm getting the Orange Box for ps3 on December 11, when it comes out.

Right now I'm playing Half Life 1...forgot how much fun that was, and how shitty the graphics were. And in the whole Black Mesa testing facility there are 3 different scientists, repeated over and over again.

Half Life 2: best shooter i've ever played. fantastic gameplay and level design
episode 1: pretty much filler for...
episode 2: amazing. without any spoilers, the final battle is simply awesome. and i cannot wait for episode 3.

So I was really excited for HL2:EP2 to come out, until I realized how it was being sold.
I've played the Half Life franchise since the first game came out. I played CS from v1.3, played TF:C, and all that fun stuff. Since those days, however, Valve seems to have garnered a little more interest in raking in the cash.
$30 for Episode Two? Maybe a little bit steep for an "episode" of a game, but kind of acceptable. Thirty fucking dollars for Team Fortress 2? Go fuck yourself. TF2 was originally to ship free with Episode 2. How this changed without anyone caring or making a stink of it, I'm not really sure. Team Fortress has always been freeware. Luckily, I'm not too interested in it since they massacred what I felt TF used to be all about. And then Portal... also would be much more appropriate to have it just ship free with EP2 to justify the $30 pricetag as far as I'm concerned.
What it really comes down to is I already own Half Life, Half Life 2, and Half Life 2: Episode One. So Orange Box is the only way for me to get Episode 2, Portal, and TF2 all together, but I'm paying for games that I already own. And to buy even two of the titles separately is highway robbery as far as I'm concerned. Conclusion: There should be a package that has HL2:EP2, TF2, and Portal--which are actually the three new releases--for less money than Orange Box. I'm not buying any of that shit till they cost less.

End rant.

I was hoping to pick up the PS3 version for 10 from work, but no, because it has to have the name 'valve' on it, it's 20 and a game credit, they did all the PS3 work over here so I think it's a poor reason.

Half-Life is the best shooter games EVER.

I'm playing Half-Life 2 now, but in the first post of the thread, the threadtstarter says he finished it in some few days. I've been playing a lot of it now, and haven't ended it yet. Is it some "newer" pack of Half-Life 2 or something, 'caus this Half-Life 2 game I have isn'rt really short?

sKratch

I played pretty non-stop and I am also able to get through shooters pretty quick. EP1 and EP2 barely take a few sittings to beat.

Seriously? I don't bealive you. :P
I've played it a lot, and it's not so short chapters. It's not like playing three hours and then you're done - it take days. Btw, I ended it right now - nice end!

Gonna download the Lost Coast also. Is it good?

sKratch

On games in Orange Box (found googling how long it takes to beat):
"Half Life 2 is the longest... about 7-9 hours for an experienced player"
It's been too long since I played it to remember how long it took me.

As for Lost Coast, it's worthless beyond seeing some neat graphics (which are now put into effect in the two episodes). But it's free, and it's a little bit of fun to play through.

After just a very quick googling myself, I found this on gamespy:

There should be no such complaints about the game's length. At fourteen chapters long, it took me about sixteen hours to finish the campaign, and -- unlike a lot of shooters -- there are many chapters I'm looking forward to playing through again.

So, it's a long game? :P Maybe for those who play the game just to finish it can do it in a smaller time, but then you just rush around and not even enjoy the game. As for me, I played a bit then and a bit then, and to me it felt very long. And as it reffers (hmm, don't know if thatw as the right word) in the quote - it's a long game.

But anyway, I think this is one of the best shooters ever. And as I said, the end was cool! And, it got it's rewards too, heheh. 35 awards, I guess? Among best game of the year, best shooter ever etc.

And I'm gonna download Lost Coast too, 'caus it's free and Half-Life. :)
