I haven't seen Deer Hunter, but hear it's "powerful". Platoon was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of the thread. I think Full Metal Jacket is better from a technical perspective but that Platoon is better at putting the audience in the war.

Platoon is good for the "overall impression" of the war, I find, and after that its somewhat redundant. Worse- it has Sheen's face.

Apocalypse now is way, way overated. I like the dialogue in the end, but everything leading up to it is a waste of my time.

Full Metal Jacket, like all Kubrick movies, has its high scenes and its subpar moments. Some of them remained engraved in my memory- like this.

But overall? Deer Hunter gets my vote.

I really didn't dig on Deer Hunter at all, I don't know why. I just couldn't find myself getting into the film.

Apocalypse Now, I loved for the dialogue. It's insanely long, and fairly slow moving, but there are quotes in it that still put a shiver up my spine when I just think about them. And Sheen, Brando and Hopper were all excellent. I'll say it's way overrated, but not way, way overrated. And considering how rated it is, that still makes it awesome in my book.

Platoon, yeah, it was basically an answer to "Green Berets" when Oliver Stone returned from the 'nam and got all pissed off by watching a pro-war movie. Something like a "Fuck you, I was there" statement. Dafoe and Berenger are awesome, and Johnny Depp is probably the hottest I've ever seen him.

Full Metal Jacket, I've got to agree wholly with HP on, the Gomer Pyle murder scene, the Mickey Mouse fan club ending credits, there were some insanely awesome parts of that movie, mixed with some boring worthless parts.

Overall, I think my vote goes to Apocalypse.

Didn't Platoon have Johnny Depp in it?

Edit: Damn beaten to it

full metal jacket for me. the shitty parts wash out of my mind and the high points from that are better than the higher points from the other nam flicks i've seen.

I agree with Endy. Full Metal Jacket is the best. Possibly even the best war film.

Platoon,FMJ,We Were Soldiers,Tigerland is a Vietnam movie but they never show Vietnam just the training to go to Vietnam its more of a porno film than a Vietnam movie with all the nudity and sex they show.

I hate people like you. Why do you brag? I've been drinking for hours. I'm drinking pure scotch from a glass right now (there is no other way to drink about it.) yet you don't see me bragging about how drunk I am. Nor do I suddenly spell bad.

Bragging about being drunk.

Everyone should brag about drinking scotch. And ice is only nice if it's a bad whisky. Otherwise you are ruining the taste. It's a sipping drink. You're not supposed to get drunk off it.

Sin Studly
08-21-2005, 12:34 AM
I've said it before, I'll say it again. Single malt should be drunk at room temperature, straight, no ice. Blended scotch should be drunk over ice, and bar scotch should be drunk mixed with coke or dry ginger ale, and poured into your mouth through a funnel.

And the darkside, We Were Soldiers sucked balls, and if Tigerland counts as a Vietnam War movie, then so does The War at Home, Born on the Fourth of July and hell, even the Big Lebowski.

You suck.

If it's cheap like dirty cheap Aldi whiskey that costs 8 for 70cl then it's for getting drunk.

Sin Studly

All alcohol is for getting drunk, from lab-stilled ethenol to Remi Martin. But if you're gonna mix Johnny Walker Blue with coke, or drink it over ice, you deserve to be fucking shot.

Apocalypse Now all the way. I can think of no other anti-war movie that has the balls to admit that we lost because we simply weren't ruthless enough or to make the only character who truly understands humanity be completely psychotic.

I don't get what the big deal about Platoon is. It's good enough because of the Dafoe/Berringer dynamic, but The Deer Hunter skullfucks it.

I've seen "full metal jacket" then "platoon".
The first is my prefered. It's really great as a "movie" in the way kubrick not only shows war scenes but in penetrating marines universe. I'all always have this pic showed earlier in this thread, this guy called whale ( or baleen ) really affected me.
Platoon is great too. It's a typical WAR movie greatly mastered.
I've heard a lot about apocalypse now but never seen it.

No, I did not watch it with subtitles, france is enough great to put french voices on movies, ya know ?
And yes. Gomer Pyle is called "baleine" in the movie which is litteraly "whale"; don't know how in english, maybe "slimy".
Hard to recognize him now...but it was a great role

Dubbing is an insult to the art of film-making. Whenever I watch a foreign-language film I always opt for subtitles over shitty dubbing.

SkyRocker

Of course a dubbing a movie is making a minor version but you're speaking english, don't you ? Not me.
And I'm sorry but my preference goes to full metal because of the actors and the script. For example, the first part. The instructor is using hilarious words to command the marines. It's been really great.

Dubbing voices over has nothing to do with the greatness of a country. It just means that there are many members of your country who are illiterate.

Didn't you see the "" ?
And false, dubbing voices don't mean that france is mainly populated by illiterate but only by persons who just don't listen to a fast-speaking foreign language like english or scandinavian ones oftenly. It was worthless...
And sin, you'd not know too. Gomer has a name which fits to its situation. The original version was slimy instead of whale ie the same.

I've seen horrors... horrors that you've seen. But you have no right to call me a murderer. You have a right to kill me. You have a right to do that... but you have no right to judge me. It's impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror. Horror has a face... and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies. I remember when I was with Special Forces. Seems a thousand centuries ago. We went into a camp to inoculate the children. We left the camp after we had inoculated the children for Polio, and this old man came running after us and he was crying. He couldn't see. We went back there and they had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile. A pile of little arms. And I remember... I... I... I cried. I wept like some grandmother. I wanted to tear my teeth out. I didn't know what I wanted to do. And I want to remember it. I never want to forget it. I never want to forget. And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God... the genius of that. The genius. The will to do that. Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And then I realized they were stronger than we. Because they could stand that these were not monsters. These were men... trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love... but they had the strength... the strength... to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral... and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment. Because it's judgment that defeats us.

So they didn't even consider putting French subtitles at the bottom of the screen because everybodies to illiterate to read them without complaining about all the "extra work" they have to do? Fucking clownshoes.

Agreed on all counts.

http://www.monstermania.net/RLeeErmey4.jpg

As far as Full Metal Jacket goes, R Lee Ermey fucking owns that movie. His depiction of a gunny is as close to the real thing I've seen, and the best part of FMJ is with the basic training; after that it's really nothing too special. Ermey also plays a sergeant in The Boys of Company C, which isn't that bad.

84 Charlie MoPic ain't half bad, either. The movie has tactical flaws, but the low budget and no-name actors works in its favor and it has some grittiness.
