If you're refering to guitarists from some of those classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Guns N' Roses, then I really think most of them are extremely overrrated. I'm not saying they're bad but there are many guitarists today that are better than them. There were some great jazz guitarist that started showing up around the 70-80s though so I'll have to agree with you because of that. If you consider late 80s old through the early 90s old, then there were also some good metal and solo guitarists hitting the scene.

Please define "old" more clearly in the future. You could have been talking about 2004 for all we knew.

Anyway, I agree that old music is great. Especially 80s new wave and synthpop, like Depeche Mode. I adore it.

Old music, as in the '1970 - 1999, were the best. The music now ... Is idiotic. There's not much real rock. Most of the music now is pop, or punk-pop. I think ROCK, as in real rock, is dead.

Most of the music now is horrable. Older music was great, The guitarists were extrmely talented and didn't just play powerchords like now.

Every band uses powerchords. Led Zeppelin did, AC/DC did, Guns n Roses did. It's just that many bands today ONLY use them, which is lame beyond all reason.

Powerchords are what Offspring uses in every song. It's playing one note on two different octaves and the 5th in between them (that's why they're called 5th chords). Whereas a normal chord would be the natural note.

i.e.:

G5

e
B
G
D-5
A-5
E-3

G natural

e 3
B 0
G 0
D 0
A 2
E 3

I half agree with that, even guitarists like Jimi Hendrix weren't technically amazing, I personally think it was more to do with the soul of the musicians in that era.

As for the other half, I'd like to think that the logical force of progression within music would push the boundaries of guitarists all the time... and as much as I don't entirely disagree with that on certain levels, I think the standard of solo quality has hit a plateau. And for that reason alone the greats will always be there on high rotation.
