I want to know if anyone here could help me find a free windows emulation for my iMac G5 with OSX 10.4.2 cause I want to run a PC game that requires a better PC than the one I have (requires a 450mhz and I have 350) and I'm pretty sure windows emulation on my mac would run it smoothly.

Thanks everyone.

Okay, I own a mac. What is windows emulation?(I don't know shit about computers)?

Oh and caN you actually play non-mac compatible games on a mac?

If so the first game I would get would be Freelancer. That game owns all.

an emulator is a program that mimics the functionalities of something (most often a video game system or operating system) on a computer (and some recent game systems, I've been told). That means if I can find a Windows emulator that runs on a Mac, it'll be like having a pretty good PC, on which I'll be able to play the game I want to play. Or any PC game if it's not too demanding, computer-wise. Emulation tends to slow things down.

SO ! Can anyone help me ?

I think there's an application called Wine which enables PC applications on your Mac. But I'm not sure.

Wine is not an emulator. Heh heh...

I really doubt you can run a PC Game on a mac. Even if it's powerful, you've got installation files, etc... that cannot fit with the kernel.

Won't it still work though ?

The problem with Windows emulation is that it takes a lot of power from your computer (if it's anything like other OS emulators that I've used). Even if your mac is powerful enough that it SHOULD be able to run the game, emulating Windows and then trying to run the game through that will probably make it about equal to playing it on the PC you already own, maybe even a litttle worse. If I'm not mistaken, www.zophar.net probably has a program you could use.

Haha, I remember using virtual pc years ago (pre xp and microsoft deciding they'd take over the company as well) and it was painfully slow with simple applications... I'm sure the new versions run better now than it used to.

Hope there's a unix version of the game and figure some way to get it running...

From the sounds of it, it's an older (??) game and requries less computing power, so I assume it'd run ok under emulation.

Have you thought about buying a decent PC instead? You could get one with at least 2Ghz processor for about 150

skyrocker : thats exactly why I need emulation.

lars & nieh : I'm pretty sure a game that requires 450 mhz and works (laggy) on a 350 will work on my G5

notdoc : nah, I'll try to find another way.

talking pie : haha.

endy : you gotta help me find something I can get (free cause I'd rather not play than have to pay.)

I'm sure there's other places with similar stuff but this is free.

problem with all those is that you still need to install an operating system to play the games... namely windows.

so windows emulators aren't standalone then ?

Endymion

those are all *pc* emulators. not windows emulators. they emulate x86 hardware, not any particular operating system.

Sinister
10-02-2005, 12:44 PM
aww fuck. do you think I can use the same windows license and installation stuff on the mac as I already used to install it on my PC ?

by the way what does "x86 hardware" mean ?

Endymion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86

and you probably can, sure, as long as it doesn't need to do that phone home thing. activation? i don't remember what ms calls it. so xp home and xp pro, non corporate edition, probably won't work.

stupid microsoft shit.

so there's no way I can get my mac to emulate windows for free ?

you can pirate a copy of windows too. it's not legally free, but it's free. or, as mr. pie said, wine might work... but i didn't know there was a mac version. i guess it's through fink?

Sinister
10-02-2005, 01:04 PM
WINE... gotta check. whats that "fink" thing you mentioned ?

Endymion

fink is a project to port a lot of linux software to mac.

What you need is a Linux-emulator for Mac. Then you can run your Windows app under Linux under Mac. Yeah...

wine is basically a project to write dlls and other windows libraries so that things that use them to run on windows can be run on other operating systems.
