I've done it for four months now just to see what happens and to kill some anxieties. All excuses, I know. But I don't smoke much at all. And I'm in a quitting phase, sort of. And both of my parents know about it. They've bought me cigarettes before. They don't smoke. And they mind me smoking but they also know that I'm smart enough to know what I'm doing. Plus, they pretty much know I'll quit. It's just a matter of time.

i smoke not that it really matters to anyone here. The thing that usually annoys me about these topics is sooner or later it get bombarded with anti smokers. Not that i have a problem with that but stating the obvious of it being unhealthy isn't gonna make you seem super intelligent to smokers like some of you do, besides at the end of the day each to their own, if you wanna be a preecher join the Jehovah's witness's and leave people to do what they wanna do.

tripple nonsense:

black shit; naah. that's certainly not smoking. that's sucking pencills.
she probably already has lungcancer? dear, I think she'd already noticed.
& second hand smoking isn't half as bad as they make you believe it is.

everyone's lungs are black as night - not by smoking, or the smoking of others, but simply by all the chemicals in the air & shit you breathe. a smoker's lungs aren't much 'blacker' than yours, they just contain less effective vollume.

cancer grows quickly; you notice short of breath within a matter of days.

you'd have to grow up sitting permanently next to someone, who smokes every second of the day, to effectively increase the chance of lungcancer. don't be so afraid of cancer, *everyone* gets it eventually (100% chance of females getting breast cancer & 100% chance of males getting prostate cancer), but most people don't grow old enough to actually be living with it. they just make you afraid of it, so you'll make her quit. she's the one damaged far most.

I've been a nurse for five weeks as a training period for medicine, if that counts for anything, though. ;p

Linda
11-26-2004, 06:14 PM
What kind of doc you want to be?

JoY
11-26-2004, 06:25 PM
I don't know yet.

I used to think I was oh so sure I wanted to become a psychiatrist, but I've seen a lot of the frustration of that profession, just by being a nurse for five weeks. you just can never really reach any kind of mental illness with any kind of medicine. I know I've stopped people from suicide in the past, but that was only, because I was close to them & could stop them with sentimental reasons. when being a psych.. you suddenly lose all of those arguments; it becomes your profession & just a matter of 'business' in a strange kind of way.

my dad is a lungspecialist & I've worked at his department as a nurse. very, very interesting. it's strange to see, that hardly anyone even thinks while breathing, while there are some, who constantly think of the possibility not to breathe. having difficulty with breathing, just imagine that. how beautiful would it be to cure people from that. I'll admit it (& my dad would love this, which would of course annoy the hell out of me), my dad has a wonderful job & if I could ever do what he does for people, I'd grab the chance.

these are my two main interests at the moment, but I've got many years to consider this, since my studies take at least six more years to finish.

for the same reason I want to quit smoking before the age of 25.
I don't have an asthmatic person in the family (my cousin used to be, though), or anyone who died from lungcancer, or circulationproblems, (I *have* seen several people dying from cancer & choking in asthma-attacks - not a pretty sight; they suffer) but I do have slight lungproblems myself. I've once had pneumonia, caused by mycoplasma (rather rare [[1 of 1000 people get it, statistically, & mostly males]], difficult to diagnose & to treat) & since it was late discovered, a small part, where the infectious tissue was, turned into scar tissue, that has no function whatsoever in the lungs.

in times, when I smoke a lot, due to stress, or any other factors, I sometimes have difficulty breathing, especially when I sleep on my back (for logical reasons), & it scares the shit out of me. it makes me scared one fine morning I won't wake up, because I suffocated in my sleep, which makes me breathe even more heavily. (hyperventilation on top of having difficulties to breathe sure is loads of fun. ;p ESPECIALLY at night) I get pneumonia & bronchitis much more easily now, since smoking, combined with the existing scar tissue, weakens my lungs. I have pneumonia/bronchitis about four times a year, ever since I frequently smoke.

it bothers me, yeah, but it comforts me, that I know very, very well what I'm doing (I've done research on the subject & worked for five weeks at the hospital's lungdepartment) & that I also know that'll motivate me in the end to put the tarsticks down. (it sometimes does; right now I'm putting smoking on hold for health reasons) I know the damage, caused in these early years by this amount of smoking during this short amount of time, isn't chronical. I'll live. right now there's just so much more to my life, than my health. pff, my health hasn't ever counted for shit anyway. it's always been wobbly.

Izie
11-27-2004, 08:29 AM
for the same reason I want to quit smoking before the age of 25.

Would be a long quote otherwise ;)

I used to have bronchitis a lot while I was younger, but only one pneumonia. That was scary enough anyway, I never ever want to be like my sister, hissing and barely breathing for God knows how many years now.

You'd better know what you're doing missy, and you'd better stop too. If I managed to quit candy, you can quit cigars :p

you do know those pictures are absolutely unrealistic, right?
the right lungs have suffered from a lot more, than smoking, so to see. besides there's severe emphysema visible in the picture, in a stage you'd have to light a cigarette every minute during an eternity for, to reach. the person, who USED to own that set of lungs, probably died from the emphysema. but it's still just a matter of speculating, because maybe he/she just got hit by a meteorite.

the left set of lungs is extremely unrealistic, since no lungs, anyone's been actually -using- a lifetime, look that 'untouched'.

these pictures annoy me, because they're silly anti-smoking propaganda, only meant to scare the shit out of people for the wrong reasons. don't stop smoking, or stop yourself from starting, just because your lungs will look all ugly, when you die. they will anyway.

JoY

yes i do smoke and know it is a bad habit but i did cut down alot, i was only 19 when i was already smoking 2 packs a day and feeling like shit. i mostly used to do it cause of stress and just to relax. it also helped me loose alot of weight since i used to smoke before it was time to eat, that would take my hunger away. i was a heavy smoker for 4 years and quited for 6 months but now im back at it and really plan on quiting for sure this time
right now i am trying to get my EMT (emergency medical tech) certificate and i am learning alot about the effetcs of smoking and that is really making me quit for sure. also i am in training to be a firefighter and all that tough work sure makes you regret smoking, and also to be a firefighter over here you must be a non smoker.
so i am just gonna say good luck to Joy on your health and hope you do quit and way to go to Izie and hope you never do smoke.
oh yeah and my cancer sticks for now are Marlboro Reds :o

oh hush, it's nothing. *blush* I've studied the effects of smoking on lungs. so it's easy for me to open my big gap.

I, by the way, also found the original picture of the healthy lungs. they were a LOT less red & pink. such red lungs wouldn't be healthy anyway; they look like they've got a serious arterial problem. *giggles*

DUKESTER76 - you seem really unhappy about the fact that you smoke. I know I started at a time, that I didn't really care about my health anymore & thought I wouldn't live for so very long anyway. just fun all the way, untill I'd be gone. I actually do care now, but am hopelessly addicted. I know I'm still young & still have got enough time to quit, before the damage done will be serious, but I want you to know, that if you need to know anything about smoking & its effects, just to motivate you to quit, I will tell you as much as I know. (I think it's wonderful, that you already inform yourself already so much. your body is worth exactly that what you can give it & this is about the best what you do) it's not that I'd do that for anyone, but if someone feels unhappy about their habbits, something should be done & people should try to figure out, why exactly they maintain the habbit, despite all. so if there's anything that I can do by telling you what I know, even though you probably now already know so much, I'll be glad to. I know this sounds silly, typed by smoker's fingers, but whoever could mean it as much, as a smoker could?
& thank you for the supporting words.

My dad got stage one of lung cancer so he finally stopped smoking. He had to stay in the hospital for a long time but he's ok now. He said it had hurt so much that that was enough for him not to want to smoke again.

I started to smoke at the end of 6th grade but didn't smoke that much. I used to smoke a lot everyday in 7th grade. But then I got bored and now I smoke only one or two cigarettes in trips or at parties.
