tough choice. i'm gonna go with Iron Maiden because they still kick ass while metallica just sucks now. i still like metallica's older stuff, it's just after the black album things kinda went downhill from there.

again a weird comparison, of course ill go with metallica, cuz maiden completely sucks and even though St Anger sucked all of metallicas other stuff rocks and its cool that they experiment, instead of sticking to the same thing all the time*cough*motorhead*cough*

I like Metallica, itīs my second favourite band. I also like Iron Maiden. I know some songs from them and I like Iron Maiden, but Metallica is better in my opinion.

11-27-2004, 12:11 PM
Hard to say- they're both legends. I like both for different reasons, but am probably leaning more towards Maiden. Hetfield has a great voice, but can't compare to Dickinson.

I'd say Metallica. Iron Maiden is rather annoying. Like a crying baby playing a broken record in which the only sound is the highest note on the viola.

11-27-2004, 12:17 PM
I used to love both...

I love Bruce Dickinson. His voice kicks ass. I went to see him live also in his solo album concerts.
However, the chemestry of Iron lost its magic when Blaze came in ( I stopped listening to Iron) and now that Bruce is back it is not the same. There is sth missing...

Metallica is cool... always was ( even though some people deslike Load and reload, I donīt), and I like them quite a lot still. :) Still, the Black album is my favorite.

So, if you ask me if I like Iron or Metallica... depends on the time you ask me that. Nowadays Metallica, but in the past, hard to answer that!

I don't see why people think Load/ Reload are shit, granted they're not as good as their older stuff but they still rock

iron maiden suck big time! bruce cant sing for shit and all their songs have his same drone throughout them!

metallica on the other hand are wicked, they put so much energy into their live sets and they keep making good music (although st anger wasnt their best by far)

Hey, I love load and reload! I guess people here misunderstood. Even though I know most people hate those albums, I love them and sing all the songs by heart. :) That was why I put them in parenthesis, but it was not with the meaning that I think they are bad, it means they are good for me!

Metallica for sure, I've never really got into Iron Maiden, and I think they're way too overestimated. Alright, "The Trooper" is somewhat decent.

Metallica of course. Does anybody know: is it true that Whiskey In The Jar isn't their song?

wheelchairman
11-27-2004, 03:03 PM
Of course it's true. It's a traditional Irish song. The Dubliners I think do the best version. Metallica covered a version that I don't know, but the lyrics are slightly different. (being folk and all)

BREAK
11-27-2004, 03:12 PM
Metallica covered Thin Lizzy's version.

Also, the video for that song fucking kicks ass.

Why is it always that people rip Load & Reload, but complements song such as Wishky In The Jar & Turn The Page - the songs are so similar.

I prefer Iron Maiden myself. Although Metallica have released some very solid albums, (Master of Puppets, Ride The Lightening, (Self Titled) all very good, the ones I own)
I'm just a bigger fan of Maiden. I own eleven of their thirteen studio albums. I'm a bit unsure about picking up the X Factor and Virtual XI, but I'll probably get round to it sooner or later. The two bands play slightly different styles though, so it's hard to compare them. I think Metallica vs Megadeth would be a better comparison. (I'd choose Megadeth)

Metallica are nothing vs Iron Maiden.

Iron Maiden got a Great voice.
ONLY have great solo.
Have solo in all song (pretty sure but not 100%)
Have great Musician.
Keep going NICE music.
vs
Metallica has a not too bad voice
Have a couple of great solo
Dont have a solo in all song
Musician not too bad
Doing Crap music now

But you can't almost hear the vocals of iron maiden when they play live. They could use some better boxes.

Iron Maiden is heavy metal.

And Metallica was thrash metal till 1991 and after that it's difficult to classify, but still some sort of metal/hard rock But the two bands have a completely different sound. Maybe it would be better to compare Metallica with Megadeth, or Iron Maiden with Judas Priest.

Lets put things literally

Maiden lead n guitar [enchanting dave n jenick of course] vs Metallica

Maiden drums[Nicko] vs Metallica

Bruce is the best metal singer ever.

Its rather easy to get into Metallica because they are rather cheap.

They're both great. But also bitches in a way. Both are strictly against downloading and when I bought Maiden's Dance of Death it was copy controlled, so I couldn't listen to the songs when I was doing stuff with the computer. I guess Metallica has copy controlled albums too.
But the music they make is great. I like Metallica's slower songs and ballads (maybe I sound a bit gay...) like The Unnamed Feeling and Unforgiven.

I think that desicion between this two is really easy cause IRON MAIDEN is the best metall band which I have ever heard.Such as The Offspring is the best in Punk. But Metallica have also some good song like The Unforgiven, Whiskey in the jar, Master of puppets and other hit songs. But Iron maiden is Iron maiden.Old good metall style. And Janick with Bruce are genius, aren't they?

Metallica is good. Great, even.

But mark my words: NOTHING that Metallica has EVER done posseses the atmosphere, quality or sheer magic of Iron Maiden.

to whoever said some shit about atmosphere: have you ever been to a Metallica show?
Well, I've been to a Maiden show, and from the...well, loads, and loads of bands I've seen live, Maiden was the best live show I've ever witnessed.
Also, most of the people I was there with, had seen Metallica a few months previous (I never have) and said that Maiden blow them off stage live without problem, and these are people who digg Metallica more than Maiden.

In the case of an actual show, Maiden probably put on the best live shows since Pink Floyd, in terms of staging, and lighting and everything.

And in terms of musicianship?...you're just plain wrong if you think any single member of Metallica is half as good as their Iron Maiden counter part.

and no, I don't exclusively like classically trained singers, what I meant was, it's an indisputable fact, that Bruce Dickinson is a better singer than James Hetfield. Regardless of which one you prefer.

Their albums are very diverse, you must not have listened to any of them. Now I say diverse, I mean diverse in terms of metal, but almost every Maiden album has something the last one didnt. I do agree that alot of their writing style is similar in alot of songs, and the guitar harmonies do make them sound similar alot of the time. But in terms of song writing, they've always tried new things. Wanna talk about sounding similar? Try Kirk Hammet's guitar solo. And yes, his one single guitar solo that he drowns with his wah pedal, has horrible vibrato on, wanks out the same pentatonic minor scale, and plays on literally every song. The only good thing about St Anger was there was none of his attempts at playing guitar.

(yes I'm over doing it a little, he has 3 or 4 nice solos.)

Metallica. Have you seen them live? And don't post shit like "Ulrich is mediocre and Hammet is even worse". Seriously. Metallica is Metallica. Mainstream or not.
The last part of your post literally didn't mean anything, and Ulrich is mediocre, and Hammet is literally the worst guitar player to make it big and be known as a great guitar player in the history of music. What makes it worse is that he was taught by Joe Satriani, who is amazing.

I don't care how good Satriani is, his songs aren't nearly as good as Metallica's. Hammet cannot be that bad.
Well when comparing song quality that's obviously just a matter of opinion, I happen to think Satriani's music is much better written over-all than Metallica, but I can totally see how someone could like Metallica more, they're just so easily accesible, whereas Joe Satriani is an instrumental rock guitarist, it takes a particular person to like that kind of thing.

Regardless of that however, James Hetfield writes Metallica's music, it's easy to hear that, from what I gather Kirk contributes very little other than the odd lead riff and solo. I think I read somewhere that he wrote the music for Enter Sandman, but that's just a droney song anyway, James writes all of Metallica's good shit. And James is a much better guitarist than Kirk also.
People should learn that playing fast guitar does not equal good guitar playing, and it definitely does not equate to good music either.

So yes, no matter how good James' music is, Kirk can in fact, be that bad of a guitar player.

Satriani wipes his ass with Hammett solos. Come now, don't be ignorant.
Truth, I mean, it's not a preference thing, Satriani is just better, as fact. Like and not just because he plays fast, because that doesnt mean a thing, it's because he's a better musician all around. He's also pretty much flawless on the guitar, which is a rare thing.

James is better at singing than Bruce. Metallica writes better songs than Maiden. Could there be Metallica without Maiden? Probably not, but Metallica are better! Just like The Offspring are better than Sex Pistols!

Maiden are ridiculous! They are stuck in 1979 or something. Spandex is over. If you gays like to watch the male tackle, that's ok, but Metallica's music is way better.

And to those dissing Hammet: His palying can be boring! It is on the last 2 records! But he can play really moody non-shredding solos that are full of emotion (Outlaw torn, Bleeding Me, etc...) and when he plays outside of Metallica he sounds very different. He does what's best for a song! Listen to the song he did with Santana, and if you can tell who's playing what, you're a liar!

Iron Maiden is far superior to Metallica in songwriting prowess, musical talent, technical instrument skill, vocals, EVERYTHING.

Maiden laid the fondation that allowed Metallica to thrive. No comparison needed. Both are good in there own right, but it's all personal preference.

I couldn't help but notice a few people a couple pages back (which looking at the dates could have been years ago) claiming that anyone who thinks maiden has better stage presence clearly hasnt seen metallica live...

Well I say if you honestly think that is true, you clearly have never seen MAIDEN live. Seen them twice and both times are, to date, the best live shows i've been to, including the offspring last week, which was pretty fucking sick.

As for the argument of who is actually a BETTER band, I really think overall Maiden has more talented musicians than Metallica. Harris is a better bassist than Newstead and Trujillo, but I am not sure about Burton. Burton may have had him beat, but I feel Burton's talent was still on the rise when he was killed in that accident, may he rest in peace. So for bassists I dont think we really got to see Burton in his prime. Guitarists... From a technical standpoint, the three guys from maiden blow hammet out of the fucking water. All Hammet has on his side is speed. I personally feel maiden's guitar work is just more technical and complex. Had Mustaine stuck with Metallica, it'd be a bit more debatable, because Mustaine is a more talented guitarist than Hammet. Now for a metal drummer, Lars is severely overrated. McBrain could best him in a drum duel one handed. Clive Burr probably could too, but I think McBrain is better than Burr was. As far as vocalists go, Bruce wins. Hands down. hetfeild sounds good with the rest of his band, at least in the older stuff. Newer stuff, especially Cyanide, you can really hear that Hetfeilds voice is pretty much shot compared to what it once was. Bruce's voice has dropped in quality a bit too, but not NEARLY as much, plus he has one of the largest vocal ranges in metal, while hetfeild's range really isnt anything to call home about. In my opinion the only people in metal that really give Bruce's vocal range a run for its money would be Rob Halford and Ronnie James Dio. In fact they may both very well be better than Bruce.

Metallica is still a very good band, don't get me wrong. And if you like Metallica more, that's fine, everyone is allowed to have their own personal preference. Personally, Iron Maiden is my all time favorite band, while Metallica sits at the number 2 seat, so they are my two favorite bands, but Maiden comes out on top.

But personal preference aside, I think it would be VERY hard to argue with me(with legitimate logic and reasoning anyway,) when I say that in terms of musicianship and talent, Maiden is the better band. But like I said, that is not to say Maiden is the end all be all. Who you like is entirely personal preference.

Smash_Returns
07-14-2009, 12:49 AM
I'd say Harris is much better than Cliff Burton was, but, as you said, he was still working his way up.

Also, any one of the guitarists could beat Hammet in a guitar duel. Hammet is decent, but both Adrian and Dave from Maiden are better than him in all aspects, including speed, if they wanted to, but Maiden doesn't rely on speed, they use well-written music. However, I think Hammet is better than Janick.

Lars Ulrich is a terrible drummer. No competition, McBrain wins.

Bruce also wins vocals by a landslide. Yes, his voice has weakened slightly in his later years. In his prime I'd say he was better than even Dio and Halford, although now, I'd say Halford wins in range. (However, Maiden's new stuff is better than Priest's new stuff).

So, for musicians and talent, Maiden dominates Metallica.

Now, for music, I will review every album by each band in a paragraph.

One of the strongest debut albums in music history, from the punk-metal riffs of Sanctuary to the haunting melody of Remember Tomorrow, a true landmark in metal history.

Killers -
Maiden's follow-up to their great debut, and Paul Di'Anno's last with the band. While not as diverse as the first, it more than make up for it with a strong line-up of metal classics, such as Murders In Rue Morgue and Wrathchild.

The Number Of The Beast -
Proof that a successful band can switch singers and still be amazing. Bruce's voice is at its best in his debut with the band. If you don't already own this album and know it front and back, you don't know metal.

Piece Of Mind -
The follow-up to The Number Of The Beast. Overall, not as strong, but featuring one of the best individual tracks, The Trooper, it still is a classic.

Powerslave -
My personal Maiden favorite, it doesn't hold a single weak track. Not only that, but it closes as strongly as it opens. Opening the album is the Maiden classic Aces High, and closing it is one of the greatest metal epics ever told, the 14 minute long Rime Of The Ancient Mariner.

Somewhere In Time -
Maidens most experimental album (compared to it's direct predecessor), it shows that when used properly, synthesizers and synth guitar can actually add depth to music, rather than making it cheesy. Plus, it has Wasted Years and Heaven Can Wait.

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son -
A concept album, and a very good one at that. My second favorite, and it foreshadows the future 2000's stuff with a progressive feel to it.

No Prayer For The Dying -
They tried to become a bit more heavy with this one. It works on some songs, not so much on others.

Fear Of The Dark -
A highly underrated album. Sure, about half of the stuff is quite similar to what you got on No Prayer For The Dying, but the other half is mind-blowing. Afraid To Shoot Strangers, From Here To Eternity, and the title track are Maiden classics, and among my favorites.

The X Factor -
Bruce left on this one, and was replaced by Blaze Bayley. Not too bad musically, but Blaze doesn't have the vocal range of Bruce.

Virtual XI -
Slighly better than The X Factor, it's actually quite good, but again, Blaze is no Bruce.

Brave New World -
Bruce returns on this one (So does Adrian, he left on Fear Of The Dark). A great album. It picks up musically where Seventh Son left off, it continues to pursue a progressive feel. With tracks like Brave New World and Out Of The Silent Planet, this is a Maiden classic (Yes, even in 2000).

Dance Of Death -
A progression on the style of Brave New World. A very good album. But the artwork sucks.

A Matter Of Life And Death -
The most progressive album to date, and a very good album overall. Another progression from Dance Of Death, I just can't wait for what'll come next from Maiden.

And now, onto Metallica:

Kill 'Em All -
A decent album, nothing groundbreaking. The guitar is best on this album, compliments of Dave Mustaine, and you also get the first Megadeth song, Mechanix, on here (although on here it's titled The Four Horsemen, to fit Metallica style)

Ride The Lightning -
My personal Metallica favorite. A breakthrough in thrash metal, while still having time to slow down and write well, with my favorite song, Fade To Black, also being on the album.

Master Of Puppets -
Another great album, following in a similar vein as Ride The Lightning.

...And Justice For All -
I hate it when people say that this album is only good because of "One". This album is very solid, even though not quite as good as the previous two.

Metallica -
The beginning of the end. While it has some very good songs, like The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters, they realized that the generic metal epitomized in "Enter Sandman" sells.

Load -
Damn right. A big ol' Load. A bland, tasteless album, bringing nothing new or interesting to the table. At least every Maiden release was different. Sure, some weren't as good as other, but at least they experimented. Metallica only regurgitated, hoping to replicate Enter Sandman.

ReLoad -
A bit more effort went into this one, and songs like Fuel showed it. While not amazing, the album was "okay".

Garage Inc. wasn't an album. Fuck You, Metallica fans. Whiskey In The Jar is not, and never will be, a Metallica song. It's a Thin Lizzy song.

St. Anger -
Here they decided to try to make another Enter Sandman again, resulting in another bland, generic, terrible album.

Death Magnetic -
Not quite as generic as St. Anger, but I don't care how much it's hailed as the comeback album, it's still not that good.

The Result?
Iron Maiden old stuff vs. Metallica old stuff - Iron Maiden wins.
Iron Maiden new stuff vs. Metallica new stuff - Iron Maiden DOMINATES.

Metallica failed to win a single one of my opinions. Metallica had a good run in the '80s, but now they need to just go away. They simply aren't as good musicians or songwriters as Iron Maiden.

By "he left on FOTD" I meant he was gone on that album. He didn't leave until after NPFTD was completed and they were writing FOTD, so he technically left on FOTD.

What about lyrics?
Also, what Load is if not an experimenting album? It must be "bringing nothing new" that made huge part of Metallica's fanbase go nuts because their metal idols' last album wasn't quite metal. The whole band cutting their hair was a huge shock to metalheads back then. Sorry, but I totally don't agree with Load being nothing new.

Exactly. AC/DC has been playing the same fucking song for 30 years, Metallica at least dares to experiment. I think Load was the way of Metallica saying "fuck you" to the fans who thought by buying their albums they own Metallica and Metallica will always do what the fans want. St. Anger was totally weird, with the crappy drum sound (and by the way, Lars did an amazing job on St. Anger, it's just his drumkit sounded like shit, that's why everyone is hammering on him) and with the dropped C tuning, but i still liked some of the songs. And the "everything Metallica did after the '80s sux and they are selloutz" shit is so pointless, people are saying this because they read comments about this on youtube and they also start spreading it. And another interesting fact, when the One video came out everyone was bitching about them, but when in '85 Anthrax made the Madhouse music video, no one was bitching. And one of Anthrax' most well known songs is Got The Time?, which is basically a punk song. And also, Megadeth's most famous song is Symphony Of Destruction, a pure heavy metal song, and Megadeth is still considered thrash metal, while people say Metallica sold out and sucks. Oh, and somehow Megadeth's Risk was somehow forgotten, and a lot of people still talk about how Load and ReLoad suck.

Lyrically, Iron Maiden dominates, most of Maiden's stuff is lyrically similar to classic novels and operas, where Metallica's lyrics are typical thrash lyrics.

I don't care if Metallica sold out or not, I just don't think the music is anywhere near up to scratch with Maiden's standard. I also haven't forgotten Risk by Megadeth, and don't particularly like Symphony Of Destruction.

The thing is, my personal preference is melodic metal, and after the Black album, Metallica quit delivering on making their music melodic like Fade To Black, The Unforgiven, Sanitarium, etc... (My personal favorite songs by Megadeth are A Tout Le Monde and Trust). I dislike that they quit doing stuff like that. They've tried to continue, but all of their attempts seem uninspired. You may see Load as experimental, but I consider it them trying to replicate Enter Sandman. I could care less about it not being thrash.

I personally dislike most thrash.

Also, Lars Ulrich cant carry a beat to save his life. Yet again, I don't care about The drum quality on St. Anger. If you would listen to Metallica live, you'd hear that Lars SUCKS live. They can put on an energetic show, but
they have horrid drums live.

However, Maiden has always delivered on melody, and every album brings something new to the table, while still maintaining melody, integrity, and inspiration. They also have VERY energetic and entertaining live shows.

well, you're kinda right about the melody thing, but i think The Day That Never Comes is a perfect new member of the Fade-Sanitarium-One "family". And i personally think that at some performances Lars is even better than on the album. What i don't get is why doesn't he play Dyers Eve like he's supposed to play it. I mean, he still can do superfast doublebass beats, like in 2006 when they played "The New Song", that was basically doublebass all the way, even more brutal than in Dyers Eve. What i don't like about Metallica now is they're too...nice. It's just weird to see them being so polite with the audience. They don't even swear anymore

Those are just from random albums.

If you want an album, just get "Powerslave"

It's one of the best albums of all time in my opinion.

My List of Recommended tracks:
Prowler
Remember Tomorrow
Wrathchild
Hallowed Be Thy Name
The Trooper
The Whole Album - Powerslave
Phantom Of The Opera (The live version from Live After Death)
Wasted Years
Heaven Can Wait
The Whole Album - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Afraid To Shoot Strangers
Fear Of The Dark
The Whole Album - Brave New World
The Wicker Man
Paschendale
Different World
These Colours Don't Run

However, a good staring point for anyone wanting to begin listening to Maiden is a compilation, and they just released a decent one of their '80s material, entitled "Somewhere Back In Time" (but it is missing a few tracks, however, most of zsk's list is on it).

One of the greatest things about Maiden is that they are still making music, and all of their stuff from Brave New World to present is as good as the '80s material.

No prayer was made with Janick dude... at least I knew that.

Ok,maybe you're right

I should recommend to buy almost everything from the 80's of Maiden,
