Yeah. I fancy going to the pub but I don't want to go by myself and read my silly History books.

I'm leaving in an hour and 45 so buy train tickets now.

You read history books at a pub? Man that's awesome.

I take history books with me everywhere. That way if I'm ever on my own I always have something to do.

You'd get totally stared at here. =P Well, I guess it also depends on what kind of pub it is.

Reading in pubs is one of the greatest pastimes ever. Last summer all I did was sit in pubs all day, drinking smoking and reading. But back then it was fiction, now it's History. But I enjoy it just as much. Right now I'm reading "Politics In The Soviet Union - From Brezhnev to Gorbachev" by Ian Derbyshire. Quite small but an excellent read.

EDIT: It's an old man's pub, Sim. Kind of place where most men drink Milds and Bitters. I never get stared at for reading. Just for what I wear.

Ah nice little pub then. We don't have any here. Just full of drunken students and loud music :-(

It's the only one of it's kind, really. It's a Weatherspoons. I <3 Weatherspoons. Though last summer I did all my day reading in a Varsity.

Oh weatherspoons. I hate them with a passion due to never serving me when I didn't have a driving license. Gays. It lead to embarasment on a date, I had to get the chick to get me drinks. T'was lame. And they don't serve Jack :-(

I've been going to this one (it's called The Imperial incase you were wondering) since I was 16 and I've never, ever been ID'd.

Varsity is a great pub. Although the one I go to is always understaffed. Grrr

I'm not wholly keen on the prices but the drinks, pubs and selections are always top notch.

Haha 16. Well this one if figure of 8 on broadst. well gay. But I have probelms with ID everywhere on non student nights. I don't look 21, but I clearly look 18. But the law says look 21 or whatever.

In Walsall the only trouble I've ever had is in Yates's. And the place I work, obviously. I've never been ID'd anywhere else.

Does England have a dearth of coffeehouses? Coffeehouses are meant for reading.

I wish it was more commonplace here to say I was "going out to the pub". As it stands, it's generally "going out to the bar", which doesn't sound nearly as good. The best I could do would probably be a pub-style bar.

Yeah coffeehouses (most have alcohol licence) are a haven for book readers and students and all. People gather there to do their work.

An irish pub here even offers books on a shelf. Crappy stuff though, with the cover all worn out. It's mostly an attraction if anything, but it's an indication that reading isn't un-natural. Not that I have seen anyone read however.

Yep we have loads of Starbucks with sofas. so me an my mates go there spend like 3 on a mug of coffee and have a rather lovely chat and study session.

The coffeehouses here either a) suck or b) won't let you smoke. And I can't read without a cigarette. I'm odd like that.

I went out with my brother in the end. Went back lunchtime, too - they now have Budweiser on tap. I screamed in happiness. Then I drank it. Then I had another.

I've no doubt about that. Ours are all full of stupid old women who stare at me. Plus they all close at 5.

haha, Tizz, I kept reading 'coffeehouses' like 'coffeeshops' & thought to myself; "what the hell is everybody on about coffee??!"

Our coffeeshops are open 24/7. Pubs and bars only until 3-something. (they start clearing the crowd past 3am).

I remember going to a 24 hr coffee place in Sydney at around 4 in the morning because I couldn't sleep.

It was really weird, I'm used to it being extremely cold at night.
