View Full Version : Porcupine Tree

I did a search and I'm surprised no one has mentioned them before. I'm also surprised that I like them since I usually don't like this type of music. I think they're progressive rock or something. Everything about them is great but sometimes I get tired of the English accent. The only probelm is that they have a bunch of those pussy solos. I think the politically correct term nowadays is "emotioanl solos." Just do yourself a favor and download the following songs.

Four Chords that Made a Million
Lightbult Sun
She's Moved On

I heard them in my brother's car a couple months ago. I was surprised I liked them becuase there were a few times where they sounded a bit too traditionally proggish, but they're really a very good band.

p.s. As soon as I saw the topic I knew you were the one that made it. Yay.

11-29-2005, 05:02 PM
is my music taste really that predictable? :(

11-29-2005, 05:43 PM
You're the only person here (aside from maybe All About Eve) that actively seeks out stuff along these lines.

11-29-2005, 06:10 PM
but I think sKratch has similar tastes too.

11-29-2005, 06:22 PM
True, but he never really posts in other bands.

m4a files = teh gayz. (I can't convert them). No Porcupine Tree for me. I've heard of the band before by the way, never listened to them though.

11-29-2005, 07:53 PM
winamp, real player, or quicktime should be able to play them. If you don't have winamp, I suggest you get it or stop living.

I hate m4a files. iTunes plays both, but I prefer mp3 format. I'm sure there's something on download.com that can convert them.

m4a is superior to mp3 in terms of quality.

plus why in the world don't you people have winamp by now?

11-29-2005, 08:09 PM
m4a is superior to mp3 in terms of quality.
It may be, but none of my programs use it. The only problem with mp3 is that on my iPod, the files are listed as some random four-letter combination.

I have winrar, but could never find a free permanent download of winamp.

11-29-2005, 08:13 PM

Ohhh! I just remembered, I used to have winamp but couldn't figure out how to work it :o . Pointers?

11-29-2005, 08:17 PM
was there to figure out? just open a file with it.

btw, why did you mention winrar in the other post. Winamp is a media player .

Oh I thought it was a converter. I really don't know anything about it. A guy downloaded it on my computer and I didn't know what to do with it at the time and deleted it.

I can do some mp3's tomorrow when at work.

I'm seeing them next week! hurrah, 7th at Shepherds Bush Empire, should be fantastic.

Still I'm envious of the people who got to see side project Blackfield open up for them in the US (on a few dates). Lucky people.

So in my occasional visits to bands websites to see if there's any new news I read this:

PT sign to Roadrunner

Roadrunner Records issued the following press release today:

Roadrunner Records is delighted to welcome epic rockers PORCUPINE TREE to our family.

Porcupine Tree is unquestionably one of the most difficult-to-categorise and innovative bands out there. The music is breathtaking, ranging from psychedelic trip-hop to progressive metal, and a compendium of other sounds in between.

Evolving from one man’s self-indulgent creative outlet back in 1992, Porcupine Tree has grown into a well respected major-label-signed four-piece who have released several albums. Their most recent, 2005’s ‘Deadwing’, served to further skyrocket the band's renown and they are currently hard at work on a brand new record - set for release on Roadrunner (excluding North America and Japan) in early 2007.

“Porcupine Tree are extremely happy about our new partnership with Roadrunner Records for our forthcoming album,” comments Steven Wilson. “Roadrunner has established itself as one of the world’s premier independent labels for rock music, and we couldn't be more enthusiastic about working with them to expand our audience and elevate Porcupine Tree to the next level.”

Porcupine Tree's next album will be issued by Atlantic Records in North America, and WHD in Japan. As surpising an announcement as when Opeth signed to them.

Edit: also if you want to check out a full live set there's their Rockpalast performance which was aired on wdr in Germany on google video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=138242861598716315&q=porcupine+tree

So I saw PT on this Friday past, approximately 50 minutes of new songs! Which I also happen to have a live recording of. :)

That's awesome. I love In Absentia, although I have another that I don't like so much. How was it?

10-01-2006, 02:56 PM
Something early on I take it? It was a lot more psychedelic and such as they were Steven Wilson's sideproject to start out.

It was awesome, I think some songs they would have played were missed out (due to the new material being played). Also annoying how it always seems annoying people find their way behind you at a show. I wish that 5 min intermission didn't happen.

And new tracks, I don't know names so they've got great titles at the moment.

Sounds like the set they played at the Carling Academy in Glasgow a few nights ago when I went to see them.

Awesome band, though I'm much more a fan of their newer "rockier" stuff. Shame they didn't play "Shallow". That would've topped off an amazing gig.

What album should I get next, assuming In Absentia is my favorite? Lightbulb Sun maybe?

What album should I get next, assuming In Absentia is my favorite? Lightbulb Sun maybe?I guess, or possibly Deadwing. I'd forgotten how good Lightbulb Sun was until just looking at what tracks where on it just now. Do you have the 'bonus' tracks fron In Absentia that came on a second CD?

All About Eve
10-06-2006, 02:23 PM
No I don't, and Deadwing is the other one that I have that I don't really like.

10-06-2006, 02:41 PM
oh man, I haven't listend to Porcupine Tree in ages. I think I forgot how they sound like. I'm not 100% sure if I even have the mp3s anymore. I lost a lot of my music when I tried tried to transfer everything from my old hard drive to my new one.

I still have the first few you uploaded, plus the In Absentia album if you want them later.

I'll take whatever you have.

Even my love?

(it'll be a bit because my computer's being gay)

11-17-2006, 04:30 PM
So while looking at what I'd uploaded to a server I rememberd I put these bonus tracks from In Absentia on it.

01 Drown With Me.mp3 (http://www.hippieburner.com/bbs/pt/2-01%20Drown%20With%20Me.mp3)
02 Chloroform.mp3 (http://www.hippieburner.com/bbs/pt/2-02%20Chloroform.mp3)
03 Strip The Soul (Video Edit).mp3 (http://www.hippieburner.com/bbs/pt/2-03%20Strip%20The%20Soul%20_Video%20Edit_.mp3)

The video edit isn't really a big deal.

New album out in April. It seems the 6 new tracks they played on the last tour are what the album will be made out of.

1. Fear of a Blank Planet (7.28)
2. My Ashes (5.07)
3. Anesthetize (17.42)
4. Sentimental (5.26)
5. Way Out of Here (7.37)
6. Sleep Together (7.28)

A 6 minute sampler of those tracks on http://www.myspace.com/porcupinetree

Porcupine Tree is definitely one of the best Progressive Rock bands ever.
Fear Of A Blank Planet is an album you never get tired of and you can listen to it in kind of every emotional condition!

I'm going to see them live on November 14 in Munich! Steve Wilson is a genius and unlike most Americans, I love his British accent.
Anyone who likes him and his opinion about music, should go see this interview:

He's speaking true words...

I'm watching them in December when they play Manchester. Anyone heard the ep Nil-Recurring? It's pretty good.
