Agnostic.

Also belong to a private club that doesn't gleefully reitirate all the contradictions of the bible to be interesting.

And another club - one that knows that antidisestablishmentarianism is only the longest word in English for pussies.

Anybody knows The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, by Saramago?

For those who are Catholic (without having been asked about it) and consider themselves agnostic, I recommend you to read this book. I'm doing and I'm enjoing it a lot

It's the same story of the Bible, but as it would have really happened according to the time it was supposed to happen in... The fact is that Joseph and Maria have sex in the first chapter...

Sorry about the names, I'm translating them but I don't know if I do the correct translation...

I'm agnostic.

Also, what the hell is "secular humanist"? My friend says that's what you are if you question if there's a god, when I said I was agnostic.

Secular humanism is a set of beliefs which emphasize the importance of reason and of individuals rather than religion.

The main difference between Secular humanism and agnosticism is that SH is more based on logic and reasoning as to the beliefs of the individual/individuals, where as agnosticism is aknowledging the presence of a higher power, but without the ability to know about it or know it's will and how to worship it.

My friend was right. I guess I am secular humanist, in that case.

All About Eve
12-05-2005, 03:31 PM
I'm kind of a mix of SH and agnosticism, myself. I don't think that everything that goes happens by chance, but I don't think there's anyway to pinpoint what it is. Whether that's a god or higherpower or whatever, it's not for us to know.

I think agnosticism doesn't really mean that you think there is a god... Just accepting there could be a god.

It's accepting that there could be a higher power, not necessarily a god.

belen1979
12-05-2005, 03:39 PM
well, i looked up in a dictionary and it says something like (I'm translating so sorry...): not denying the presence of a higher power, they think they cannot understand this power/god/whatever... It's a very small difference, but a difference, in my opinion, of course...

I consider agnostic, and I don't think there's no god/highpower but I don't think there is... Well, doubting about its existence...

Vera
12-05-2005, 03:41 PM
Agnoticism means accepting the fact there could be a god/higher power/whatever but not committing self to any belief of there being or not being such a thing.

ag·nos·tic
1.
1. One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
2. One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism.
2. One who is doubtful or noncommittal about something.

Vera

All my family is catholic, I'm supposed to. Mi mother is very very very catholic. But I guess my father, even though he has been baptized, as I have been, is agnostic, and listening to him and not to my mother makes me an agnostic. I've allways hated not the catholic religion, but the entreprise that has became the Church

EDIT: enterprise is correct? well, I meant a company... Well, you understand what I want to say

i was raised Christian... as of now, I'm all kinds of confused. i believe in a higher power.. and i'm bothered by many things about organized religion.

so who knows. i'm.. spiritual, i guess, whatever that means.

oh. this reminds me. i am immensely annoyed by fundamentalist Christians... and equally annoyed by hardcore atheists who constantly attempt to preach their bullshit to me. YAY, YOU DONT BELIEVE IN GOD, good for you. WE GET IT! WE GOT IT THE FIRST 57 TIMES! it doesn't make you cool, intellectually/morally superior, or a better human being in any way. In fact, being a preachy whoreface puts you on the same level as all the "ABORTION IS MURDER GOD HATES FAGS" Christians. In conclusion, shut the fuck up.

Even though agnosticism is the only thing that makes sense using reason, life just doesn't work that well for me when I don't believe in something. I'm too introverted to be agnostic- I may claim that I can't possibly know about God or gods or no gods or heaven or hell or how the hell we all got here, but that doesn't mean I'm actually gonna stop torturing myself with the thought. So I've finally sort of formulated a belief. Kind of a weird one at that.

I think I believe in the Christian religion, but I belief that the Bible doesn't even begin to tell the entire story. I believe that there is tons of stuff that God simply doesn't want us to know. For one, I also believe that there are other gods who maybe watch over different worlds or universes, and that there is communication and sort of a culture among the gods the same way there is on Earth. I believe that we are more insignificant than anyone has ever imagined. Christianity definitely suggests that we have a purpose, but the question is, who or what is that purpose for? I don't even want to think about it. But I inevitably will.

I hate believing in something almost as much as I hate not believing in something. Why? Because it's so fucking hard to do. The thing I hate most about life is that there are so many things that need to be faked for a while until they come real. Faith, friendships, relationships, work: they all work that way. It's like falling asleep. You just lie in your bed with your eyes closed essentially pretending to be asleep until you actually fall asleep. Too many fucking things in life are like falling asleep.

Sorry, I'm a latecomer to this thread and had to post my religious spiel.
