BATWT

i hate cup draws, they're the most stupidly organised over-complicated affairs on TV.

group c though, harsh: argentina, ivory coast, serbia and montenegro, and holland. Feel sorry for any serbs out there

not bad for england though: trinidad and tobago, paraguay, and sweden. We'll have that thankyou very much

arak0r
12-09-2005, 01:05 PM
well shit :|

arak0r
12-09-2005, 01:05 PM
that is one tough group there as well. italy, ghana (meh), usa, czech republic.

I don't know, I haven't kept up with soccer in a long while, but last I remembered, Sweden was always quite a threat. Although the group itself is definitely not a killer.

Italia311
12-09-2005, 01:08 PM
I cant wait for Italy to show USA how to play calcio

arak0r
12-09-2005, 01:08 PM
sweden has a decent team. larsson is still good, ibrahimovic is also very good. theyre going to be a strong offensive team at any rate, dunno about their defense though

BATWT
12-09-2005, 01:09 PM
oh yeah, sweden are easily the toughest test for england in that group they're a quality team. then again, knowing england, all 3 of them will be difficult

arak0r
12-09-2005, 01:09 PM
what happened last time italy and the us played?

BATWT
12-09-2005, 01:10 PM

i thought henrik had retired from international football? or has he come out of retirement for one last go at the world cup? if he is playing; him and ibrahimovic would be a force.

they've got an OK defence; olof mellberg is quality but i'm a villa fan so..

SkyRocker
12-09-2005, 01:10 PM
B,C and E groups will be enjoyable to watch. Can't wait to see Argentina-Holland, Italy-Czech and England-Sweden. I feel like a surprise coming from Ivory Coast and Ghana, they're really great teams.

no, you're right, he's in the squad - i'm sure he retired about a year before he left celtic. ah well.

One group I'm actually going to stay tuned for is group F. Japan, Croatia, Australia and Brazil - should at least make for some extremely interesting matches.

BATWT
12-09-2005, 01:23 PM
i've got a feeling that's going to be deceptively tough for brazil. it will indeed be interesting watching

Japan and Australia have especially come out a lot in recent years. I'm interested to see how they do in this world cup.

BATWT
12-09-2005, 01:27 PM
yeah, with guus hiddink in control of australia you never know, considering what he did with korea last time and with the aussies he's got an arguably better team to work with as well.

Vera
12-09-2005, 01:49 PM
Weren't Sweden & England in the same group last time, too? Tough luck.

I like France's prospects. AND THE FACT GREECE ISN'T IN THE WORLD CUP!!! YESSSSS.

Anyway, ahem. Group F & E totally the most interesting ones.

Idiot
12-09-2005, 01:50 PM
England are pretty lucky. Their game against Sweden will be good.

The group with Japan, Australia, Brazil and Croatia will be a good one.

Spain have the easiest group.

arak0r

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/worldcup/wallchart?cc=5739

so yea. second place team in group e, will place first place winner of group f. meaning, if the us gets second (which is most likely best result for them), they go against brazil (99% likely)

Not necessarily. Brazil are a great team, but I'm not convinced that they're the best currently.

Italy is undefeated in 14!!! This is going to be good! :)

Possible Brazil and Italy meet...nice nice

italy i think so. czech us will be a draw.

BATWT

arak0r

did you see italy v netherlands in netherlands? first time netherlands lost in.. a long while. pretty much dominated by italy, friendly or not

funny clip too btw hp

Czech has been awfully strong. Does Nedved still play in the team?

BATWT
12-09-2005, 02:28 PM
oh yeah, they do indeed have moments when they show their true class, but when it comes to the big shit, they seem to do a charlton and lose steam, spain especially. bizarre seeing as they have a hell of a squad

BATWT
12-09-2005, 02:29 PM
Czech has been awfully strong. Does Nedved still play in the team?

yep, he's back from retirement; rosicky is there as well. very good midfield

Vera
12-09-2005, 02:37 PM
That ought to make Czech a tough opponent for USA.

BATWT
12-09-2005, 02:39 PM
well.... i wouldn't go that far!

voodoomagik
12-09-2005, 02:42 PM
We did beat czech rep. in bucharest with 2-0! Unfortunately they had 2 points over us and they qualified! We made a draw with Armenia! If we would of beaten Armenia (like it was natural) we would have been the ones qualified, because we would of had the same amount of points they had but we led with 2-1 in direct matches (we lost 1-0 in Prague). Iím used to Romania being unlucky after that match against Denmark for the euro 2004 qualifiers and the one agains slovenia for the 2002 world cup qualifiers! :(

BATWT
12-09-2005, 02:48 PM
romania have been very unlucky yes, had a very good team for the 1998 world cup but have gone very quiet since

arak0r
12-09-2005, 02:53 PM
Czech has been awfully strong. Does Nedved still play in the team?

before he came back they werent doing all that well in the wcq, but when he did come back, they seemed to do so so so much better. hes definately the mvp of that team

voodoomagik
12-09-2005, 02:54 PM
yeah..remember the match romania-sweden at USA '94? that was pure bad luck! we still have a pretty good team! too bad some of our players have "strange" addictions( mutu, pancu& others)

BATWT
12-09-2005, 02:56 PM
that is true, but it's a good thing mutu is getting back to how he can play and will soon be back as one of the best forwards in europe.

arak0r
12-09-2005, 03:00 PM
depending on how much play time he gets :p he is competing with del piero, ibrahimovic, and trezeguet. all 4 of them would be starters for any team

BATWT
12-09-2005, 03:01 PM
that's true. to be honest he would be my 4th choice, del piero is in outstanding form lately. apparently trezeguet is coming to england to join arsenal as a ploy to make henry stay

arak0r
12-09-2005, 03:03 PM
that's true. to be honest he would be my 4th choice, del piero is in outstanding form lately. apparently trezeguet is coming to england to join arsenal as a ploy to make henry stay

ive not heard that rumor tbh (bout trezeguet) and yea mutu would be 4th choice for me, del piero has been awesome lately, trezeguet has always been the most consistent starter for them. ibrahimovic has been gettin the starts over del piero, but i think it should change, soon.

BATWT
12-09-2005, 03:06 PM
yeah it's only rumours about trezeguet, but he is good friends with henry and arsenal will try anything to stop him going to barcelona. and going for free as well.

i think that you could easily have a team with del piero, trezeguet AND ibrahimovic in, it would be very attacking, but del piero can comfortably sit behind the front 2 and still be as effective. juventus have the defence and midfield for that to work also, but what do i know? haha

ihatechrissneed
12-09-2005, 03:07 PM
yay! I'm going to England vs. Sweden in Cologne! Fuck yeah.

BATWT
12-09-2005, 03:10 PM
you lucky lucky lucky lucky lucky lucky bastard

voodoomagik
12-09-2005, 03:13 PM
Mutu is a happy case! But what about Daniel Pancu, a player that promised so much and will probably never recover?
We are also pretty unfortunate when it comes to injuries too! Marius Niculae, young hope, got injured and still hasn't fully recovered and it's been like 3 years! Or Adrian Ilie (he played for Valencia), who spent his career from one injury to another? And there are so many others...

Iím curious what do you think of Nicolae Dobrin or Ilie Balaci (if you heard about them)?

voodoomagik
12-09-2005, 03:15 PM
by the way isn't juve also interested in cristian chivu? i heard they want to bring cassano too!

BATWT
12-09-2005, 03:17 PM
really?! i thought man. utd were interested in cassano also. cassano and chivu would be very good buys.

AND, cassano would be a useful replacement to fit into the space left by trezeguet when he comes to england...

T-6005
12-09-2005, 03:19 PM
Not that this is a bad discussion, but it's rather far afield from the World Cup draws, no?

arak0r
12-09-2005, 03:19 PM
id love it if juventus got cassano back

BATWT
12-09-2005, 03:22 PM
i've heard that a number of clubs are after him, and with roma's recent decline he may well move this summer to get some good glory. and juve would be the perfect option if he wanted to stay in italy

voodoomagik
12-09-2005, 03:24 PM
Yeah, I heard that also inter and real want chivu but he refuses to negociate, he said that he wants to stay at roma because the club supported him throughout his injury ! He is kinda stubborn, he didn't want to leave from ajax too!

BATWT
12-09-2005, 03:26 PM
but he did eventually! we all know that loyalty means nothing in football nowadays; if inter or real were to make him an offer he couldnt refuse he'd go in a shot, knowing real and the fact they need a decent centre-back they'll do just that

Italia311
12-09-2005, 03:32 PM
YEEEEEEEEEEE CASSANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I've got a Cassano jersey....

FORZA ITALIA

BATWT
12-09-2005, 04:18 PM
great stuff. this has quickly turned from a World Cup thread to just a football thread

Vera
12-10-2005, 02:41 AM
well.... i wouldn't go that far!
Well, I don't follow the happenings of the American team so what I know about their strengths is from 2002. And Czech was the moral winner of the European Cup which is why I believe Czech probably will be tough in this World Cup, too.

SkyRocker
12-10-2005, 03:03 AM
Czech is a very technic team but i fear their average defence and lack of a great forward player will not lead them to the final.

arak0r
12-10-2005, 10:09 AM
czech us will be a 1-1 draw i bet. us will prolly lose to italy, and hopefull win against ghana. im hoping ghana somehow can beat at least the czechs, and italy should be able to beat them as well. which would put the us in second place. italy will prolly make it to the finals, assuming their team chemistry doesnt blow up, cause otherwise, theyve got great players are pretty much every position

Italia311
12-10-2005, 11:53 AM
Italy has a REALLY strong team this year. The group is sketchy though. Italy always seems to find a way to FUCK UP. But so far so good for them this year.

Ghana is 4 time African Champions and the Americans are like one of the best from CONCACAF.

I dunno about the Czech. They have been a challenge for Italy on some occasions.

Who knows! We shall sEE!

Its to bad Canada is so horrible at soccer. Its seems ppl have no one to cheer for over here. I think thats what contributes to the lack of popularity for soccer in this country. Oh well...

BATWT
12-10-2005, 12:44 PM
the only canadian footballer i know of is tomas radzinski, and he's a pretty decent player. he's actually polish though

Italia311
12-10-2005, 02:47 PM
Well, hes actually Canadian and Polish if he has dual Citizenship. Assuming thats what you're talking about.

Hes decent. There are a few good players on the Canadian team that play in the states. There was a Canadian guy on the English National team last tournament...OH well. Canada blows at soccer..lol

BATWT
12-10-2005, 03:31 PM
yeah thats what i meant about the polish comment

the canadian in the english team is owen hargreaves, he's canadian/english/german. and really is not at an international standard, in my eyes, but continually gets played. he adds nothing to a game

Italia311
12-10-2005, 04:34 PM
Oh well...

I didnt even know he got played. I just heard...

BATWT
12-10-2005, 04:38 PM
well there you go: born in canada to an english mother, and has lived in germany all his life and plays for Bayern Munich. I think that's his background anyway.

Italia311
12-10-2005, 04:44 PM
Nice nice...

Thats really the only place to make money if you're going to play soccer. They have MLS in North America and Toronto is finally getting a team cause they're building a new soccer stadium but it aint no Serie A.

BATWT
12-10-2005, 04:49 PM
its probably one of the few places left that it's possible to make money out of football, with the dire state of the european clubs thanks to the ever-increasing wages and transfer fees

Italia311
12-10-2005, 04:51 PM
Bah, its all the same in all sports.

Salary cap is where its at.

BATWT

TheUnholyNightbringer

And so the Italian conspiracy theories start. First it was South Korea, then Denmark and Sweden, and now it's Lothar Matthaus (http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_ylt=Ahml63aT7ZxICeUJFfVfvE4mw7YF?slug=afp-fblwc2006gerita&prov=afp&type=lgns).
