Nope, sadly the bastards left those out this year. Oh well, I will have to survive another year without that shit.
Actually I am happiest with the DVD burner, means I can backup my DVD's so the originals don't get scratched. Takes a goddamn long time to encode the fucker though.

Ha, I'm not rich, everything I got (and that's like, every present I got, from all parts of family combined, those three are) was atLEAST half off. The guitar was 200 off and it cost less than 400 to begin with, my old phone was broken so we had to get a new one and that one was just as cheap as the other because of the sale or whatever, and the amp was cheap to begin with and really discounted too. We're not bad off, but we're not rich by any standards. I mean we're still renting a one story house inwhich my room isnt' even a bedroom.

Christmas is hell on earth, I know nothing worst
then being depressed and told to be happy.
The season of su-icide, I know why they died
Christmas reminds me I have nothing

I've got no girl there's only me
no friends or family, another Christmas alone
Got no food to eat, no ornaments or wreath
so I'll hang myself from the tree

Christmas is dark and wet, so I can't forget
Christmas reminds me I have nothing
this is the end of hope, I won't write a note
because it would be addressed to no one

I've got no girl there's only me
no friends or family, another Christmas alone
Got no food to eat, no ornaments or wreath
so I'll hang myself from the tree

Now I will say good-bye, no one will cry
Christmas goes on without me
My life is now complete, so I'll go to sleep
Forever and ever and ever...

I've got no girl there's only me
no friends or family, another Christmas alone
Got no food to eat, no ornaments or wreath
so I'll hang myself from the tree.

Hypnose is a kickass perfume. It's the best perfume I have ever used. Plus, it has a really pretty bottle.

it's definitely different than all the flowery other stuff I've ever tried. it's made with natural ingredients & that does make somewhat of a difference. actually, the difference is shockingly huge. I'm a traditional girl, though. the perfume the Amsterdam-crew gave to me (also Lancome) I liked better at first 'smell', than this one. who knows. maybe I'll learn to appreciate it. =)

i think that was it. i wasn't really into christmas this year. with having to work all day and then not having as many family members to share it with at the family dinner (due to deaths earlier in the year) it didn't seem special.

You don't give or receive presents in order to get them refunded.

You may be broke, but don't exaggerate or diss other people's gifts out of jealousy (or something quite the oposite, but essentially the same, being lower-class snobbery).

wheelchairman
12-27-2005, 11:39 AM
It's just the assumption. The act of showering your child with gifts is the act of spoiling your child.

I don't think people are judging the child so much as they are commenting on the fact that they didn't get nearly as much when they were kids. It's just the child's fault for trying to prove they aren't, when it really shouldn't matter and when their actions should prove otherwise.

Sunny
12-27-2005, 11:53 AM
I suppose to me the definition of spoiling a child is a lot more complex.. like, giving it whatever it wants, when it wants it - without a special occassion, without it actually deserving it. if a child doesn't appreciate any of the gifts, didn't have to wait for them, has no respect for the parents and no responsibilities in the household, then it's certainly spoiled.

if that's not the case, i don't see a problem with showering a child with gifts, and i don't see how Sowhat is coming off as spoiled at all.

Surely you must agree that "surely spoiled" is an admission to there being degrees of being privileged and being spoiled, though, yes? (These not necessarily being related, but often in agreement)

Sunny

I don't see being priviledged and being spoiled as related at all, to be honest. and of course there are degrees of both, but while the person in question - Sowhat - comes off as somewhat priviledged, she doesn't seem to be in the slightest spoiled.

To be perfectly honest, I haven't looked at what people said about Sowhat - my state of drunkenness is slightly past that. I just found that what you said about spoiled children seemed a bit absolute.

As for the two being related, I strongly believe that they are, but only in probability. Logically speaking, I find it much more likely that a well-to-do family would spoil their child. A child who doesn't have to see their parents earn the money is much more likely to be spoiled.

I myself have had my parents' current financial plight kept from me in technicality. Thankfully, I've managed to work a few things out by myself, and I've realized that they've fallen upon hard times. My father has been lucky to find a company that takes all of his basic needs into consideration. Extremely lucky. And yet, even with that, they have barely enough to live. And since this development is recent, both of my parents strive to keep this from my younger siblings. One, 15, spends money like... well, to be honest, he spends money almost as if he shit the stuff. My sister isn't far behind. Just the other day, I saw them spend an amount on coffee that I'd hardly be able to consider spending on even transport home. They are sheltered. And spoiled. And have been only because my parents have been well-to-do, and both me and my siblings have so far been priviledged.

My god, I hope that made some degree of sense. Otherwise, Mags. I am sorry.

PS - I hope you don't mind me calling you that. I saw your name... fuck, somewhere I don't remember at the moment.

T-6005, yah, you made sense. and indeed, logically speaking, wealthier parents should be the ones more likely to spoil their kids. But see.. myself, I grew up in a very poor country, and many of my friends' parents had difficulties making ends meet. In spite of that, though, many of the kids were actually super spoiled, and knew nothing about the value of money. They would DEMAND stuff and get it, never realizing how hard it was for the parents to grant their wishes. So the kids ended up really spoiled and bratty, even though their families were essentially lower class.

And I also know people whose parents are practically millionaires - yet the kids, although priviledged, have always had to work and earn their personal cash, and grew up never taking anything for granted.

i hope this made sense, too. heh. i'm so doped up on cold medicine. :/

It made perfect sense, actually - but, as apparently both of our assumptions come from personal experience, we can't really come to a conclusive agreement on this.

Oh well - What can you do, in the end? Something always goes awry with the best of arguments. In light of the strength of personal experience (lacking, of course, a higher authority on the matter), I'm going to take the noble option and head to bed rather than argue a point with no end in sight.

To jetlag, alcohol and feeling fucked up at 4 in the morning. Oh, and cold medicine. To each their own, after all.

Betty
12-27-2005, 02:49 PM
Oh, I wasn't aware of the name thing either... oops! I like Magdalena though, it's super pretty. Nothing wrong with going by a longer name really, if you like it. So what are a couple of extra syllables in the grand scheme of things? No need for everything to be abbreviated all the time.

On the spoiling example... I have a friend (well, not really friend) from highschool who's family was definitely far from being rich. They lived in a tiny house, the three children shared a small bedroom, etc. But she is SUPER spoiled. Instead of buying things for themselves to improve their lives, the parents spend all their cash on the girl, who 100% takes it for granted and expects it. They bought her a car, unecessarily. And still, she won't give her siblings rides, when the car was bought by her parents. She bought a dog when she clearly does not have the time nor money to take care of it, and they pay for all of it's vet bills, etc. At her summer job, she cancels half of her shifts out of laziness, and it's fine, since her parents will surely give her an money she needs, even though they really can't afford it at all.

But then, the richer people I know, some aren't necessarily SPOILED, but I'd say for the most part they are at least sheltered in a way. They may appreciate what they have, and somewhat appreciate the value of money, but they've never really had to work too hard for what they had, and never really experienced what it's like to go without.

I can understand the reaction though when you read "For Christmas I got a computer, a CD player, a digital camera, some $500 clothes, a new ipod, etc, etc, etc" I think a lot of it really is jealousy. I'll admit to it myself. I'm probably bitter and jealous in a way. But ultimately much more greatful to have grown up the way I have - I think it will work out best in the end.

I have no idea where you're pulling the "spoilt" bit from. I stated what I got because that's what the topic was asking, I (nor anyone else) said, "but I should have gotten a pony".

The fact is, he said that people must be rich (millionaires even) because of the presents they mentioned, when that's not true. It came across at him throwing a hissy fit that he only got a book and other people got more than him, and then trying to convince himself and others that it must be because they're rich.

I don't see being priviledged and being spoiled as related at all, to be honest. and of course there are degrees of both, but while the person in question - Sowhat - comes off as somewhat priviledged, she doesn't seem to be in the slightest spoiled.
Thank you :). I don't know why he's saying that, in fact it wasn't my list that was being commented on, I only replied because it was silly that the guy was saying people were rich because they got more presents than him.

As for the two being related, I strongly believe that they are, but only in probability. Logically speaking, I find it much more likely that a well-to-do family would spoil their child. A child who doesn't have to see their parents earn the money is much more likely to be spoiled.

If someone doesn't realise that their parents can no longer afford for them to be spending lots of money then they're not being spoilt. If someone hands you a beer and you accept it, but unbeknown to you, it's their last one, you're not being greedy (which would be the line between priviledged and spoilt), you just didn't realise.
