Very interesting rock band. Anybody else know them?

They suck

12-27-2005, 01:25 PM
Their first album is amazing. Everything else I've heard by them has been "meh".

12-27-2005, 01:30 PM
Which is that? I feel like checking it out? Thanks.

12-27-2005, 01:34 PM
Their first album is: Are we not men? We are DEVO!
It's much more guitar oriented while their later stuff was more keyboard oriented. Not that I have a problem with keyboards, but they sounded (intentionally) robotic on their later albums and it just didn't appeal to me.

I got the Pioneers Who Got Scalped althology as a means of checking them out as I heard very good things. I bought it, and listened but I just wasn't that blown away. Sure, their mix of offbeat electronics and irrevrent humour works, it just didn't work that well for me.

I love Whip It.

I have never heard of them.

Like someone already said, I like their first album, but the other stuff doesn't do it for me.

Yeah, I love hearing that line in the song "Jocko Homo." It's really funny.

Bump. Has anyone heard the Hardcore Devo albums? They're a bunch of songs recorded on 4-track between 1974 and 1977, before their first album came out. I just downloaded them today and I'm just starting on the second one now. They don't really sound anything like the rest of their albums but they're still fucking awesome for totally different reasons. Most of the songs are much slower, less silly and poppy and have creepy noises all over the place. Some of the songs even have a strong resemblance to the Residents. I suggest checking them out if you haven't heard them before.

The Residevo?

Don't even bother telling me how much time I have on my hands. I've been thinking about getting "Are We Not Men? We are DEVO!" for a while, but I've never gotten around to it. *shrugs*

I got the anthology a few years back. I listened, and I just didn't like it, which is a shame.

After looking at the title, i thought this was going to be about Devvo, the chav rapper. (www.fat-pie.com)

I love Whip It.

don't we all

i saw them live last year. 60 bucks, and they only played an hour. there weren't any supporting bands on the bill either.that was dissappointing, but the upside was seeing josh freese pound the skins for them.

I do like Devo ^^

10-07-2006, 12:03 AM
My favorite song by them is probably Are You Ready?

Eee! New Devo!

I have lots to say here.

1. That picture Mike posted wins everything ever.
2. Are we not men and Freedom of choice are my favorite albums. New Traditionalists is up there, too. The only song I can honestly say I do not like at all by them is "Post-Post Modern Man". I don't know why, it was just... Ick.
3. I know they've had this song for the Dell commercials for a while. It's also for that Project Runway commercial with all the gay dudes, now. :(
Well, aside from that, I love it, it's incredibly catchy and fun. And I haven't seen this video until just now. The girl "singing" could be more enthusiastic, though...
4. Spudz 4 lyfe.

I think this song's as good or better than most stuff they've done since the first album. Though I feel the need to point out that the post "Are We Not Men?" stuff has grown on me a little since initially posting in this thread.

I'm totally trying to ebay this toy right now but it went from 99 cents to $15.50 in about 10 minutes and still has 2 hours left.

I know, and you suck! I saw your status thing on Facebook before I left for work this morning and was like "Devo are on tour!?". That means I have two days to get tickets and find someone willing to go to the Philly show on Saturday with me. I swear to god, I just checked their website like 2 months ago (right around when the B-52s came around) to see if they were touring this summer and didn't see any dates around here.

I'm already on the R5 and Live Nation and Eventful newsletters, and either I'm blind or the first time any of them mentioned Devo was yesterday (and I didn't read the e-mail until today), jerkheads.

06-26-2008, 08:07 AM
sarah, can i be your +1?

06-26-2008, 08:50 AM
have fun! they put on a great show.
expensive... but great show. lol

06-26-2008, 09:37 AM
...but if they're not playing any R5, Liv Nation, or Eventful venues, then they wouldn't show up in them! Music news newsletters like Tripwire, Filter, and Musebox not only give you news about everyone who matters, but they also give shit away. woot.
I'll have to check them out then.

have fun! they put on a great show.
expensive... but great show. lol
$40 isn't all that much compared to a lot of other bands out there (B-52s were like $120 which is outrageous)

06-26-2008, 03:52 PM
true 40 isnt bad.

like i posted earlier, when i saw them at the HOB, it was 60 bucks, and they only played an hour... with no opener. a dollar a minute. lol

but 40 isnt bad.

thought of some of the people here, had to share.

That's actually the same news as the pitchfork article I linked to, but it's still awesome. It's a little frustrating that as soon as I saw the article, I tried picking it up on ebay and within like 10 minutes the price skyrocketed from 99 cents to $10 (later going up to like $26) because everyone else got the same idea.

it's like where's waldo, but way cooler.

Has anyone heard Jihad Jerry and the Evildoers - Ours is Not a Holy War? It's a "solo album" by Devo's bassist, but Devo is his backing band and considering he co-wrote a good portion of Devo's songs it sounds a lot like a Devo album, except a touch more rocking/bluesy and less robotic. Good stuff.

Eee! New Devo album coming out this year!
