I was wondering what your absolute favourite song is, falling broadly within the classification of "punk". Mine has to be Bro Hymn, by Pennywise.

PS: I hate when people put punk inside quotation marks as if it isn't a real form of music.

Yeah, I hate that too.

I put it inside them to show that I'm accepting that there are many variations within the genre of punk and much dispute over what does and does not constitute "punk". I put it inside quotation marks to help convey that I don't give a fuck about the mind-numbingly dull dissent over the definition of "punk". I wanted people to feel free to name any song that fits broadly within "punk". I wanted Endymion to feel free to share his love of Avril Lavigne. I wanted to not have to explain any of this.

"Divine Intervention"- Pennywise
"Gone"- Pennywise
"Red Hot Moon"- Rancid
"True Crime"- Riverboat Gamblers

I don't understand what's so great about "Police State in the USA" (or any song from that album, actually). Is there something in the lyrics that I'm not getting?

Nineteen Seventy Nine
07-29-2006, 10:23 AM
Nah, nothing in the lyrics. It is just the song in general. I really like the sound of the guitars in that song specifically. Haha, that's actually one of my favorite Anti-Flag albums.

opivy21
07-29-2006, 04:17 PM
Well, here I go setting myself up for one of those "tru punx" jokes that everyone loves so much here, but I have to give my opinion on Anti-Flag. Yes, part of my opinion of them is based on their record deal. In general, I don't give a shit if a small band goes to a major label. It's their choice. I do care, however, when that band writes lyrics against the government, capitalism, etc., and then goes to a major label. I could go on, but the bottom line is that they are cashing in by going against things they've put down before.

Also, I find their music obnoxious in general.

Favourite punk songs hmmm
Clash : English Civil War
Joy Division : Novelty, Digital and Warsaw. Hey just go and buy joy division.
I liked the cover Offspring did of 'Bloodstains'
Dead Kennedys Holiday in Cambodia
Lots of Offspring, 'Have you Ever' rang home to me as well as the majority of the old reaguard. Splinter though, was quite simply the worst album ever written and produced. Hit That and Cant Get My Head Around You were two album redeemers. Where were the token intro's? the random voices? The album was only 20-something-minutes long. Says a lot when the drummer leaves.

It's a bad start considering some people say that punk died in the early eighties. While I don't necessarily agree, those people would be quick to say that a song isn't punk because it didn't come from the time period.

But, with all that aside, most of those songs are pop-punk.

Punk was created in the 60's as a movement to be separate from mainstream culture. The definition of Pop (short for popular) is in strong contrast to the true belief system of so said punk. Furthermore punk has been dead since the early 70's, and has always been retarded and full of gay. Except for Patty Smith.

It sickens me when people try to hold on to this lifestyle when even the "Tru Punx", meaning those that created the movement have either died or realized how stupid the lifestyle is and moved on to something more realistic. The best example I can think of is Davey Havok starting his own clothing line "Glitter Boy" which is an obvious attempt to try and restart the whole New York Dolls thing when in reality the only boys that wear glitter and girls clothes are fags.

so what everyone is saying when punk died in the 70's everything after that they think is just some generic crap... so whats up with the offspring thats been around since like... late 80's early 90's? and if thats true... this is the offspring forums.. so i don't understand all of this.. any punk is good. i don't care whether or not some people say it "died" in the 70's. thats just when it was revolutionized and now its more expanded. and davey havok is a saint and will always be one.. no matter how stupid a clothing line may be. its all good and now in the media people just want to be rich. and thats all you need now

If you listen to the original punk rock bands like Television, The Stooges, and the Patty Smith Group it sounds nothing like what you consider punk rock whereas they were the first punk rock bands.

None of that shit is punk rock. Everybody thinks punk rock sounds like pure power chords with shitty sound scream vocals or anything that sounds like fuck authority. If you listen to the original punk rock bands like Television, The Stooges, and the Patty Smith Group it sounds nothing like what you consider punk rock whereas they were the first punk rock bands.
I think I'm in love.
