View Full Version : I've recently come to the conclusion that I hate The Mars Volta

Don't get me wrong. I still think Deloused in the Comatorium is one of the best albums I've ever heard, it's just everything ELSE about them that drives me fucking insane and makes me want to kick them. I can't really criticize their first EP. It was "meh", but at the same time, it WAS their first ep, so you gotta give them some slack. Frances the Mute, however, is a pile of garbage. Most of the songs have something going for it at one time or another, but not a single one of them is actually good from beginning to end. Hell, most of them have about 1-2 minutes that are worth listening to when they're almost all 10+ minutes long. There's the fact that they forced a concept into Frances the Mute rather than having the concept there before they wrote the album like with Deloused which was about a friend of the band that killed himself like 7-8 years earlier. That album was passionate. They broke up ATDI for the sole purpose of being able to make that album. It sounded like that stuff had been rolling around in their heads since their friend died and they needed to make that album or their heads would have exploded. Frances the Mute sounds like they said "Hey! Let's make a new cd!" and just threw it together haphazardly with as much wanking around as possible and still somehow manage to take themselves incredibly seriously about it. They're pretentious fucks. They released the track "Frances the Mute" as a single (not on the actual album) you could buy that was supposed to help you "decode" the meaning of the actual album. And the worst thing of all: their live performances. I've never been to one of their shows but I've seen videos and heard recording and have talked to other people that have seen them and the consensus is that they're not any good live. Even back in the Deloused days they weren't any good. Cedric doesn't sing; he rambles. He almost never follows the melody and when he does, he barely hits the higher notes and never sings with the same feeling he does on the album. The band never performs very tightly and they constantly dick around on stage adding huge bits of improv where there shouldn't be any, making 5-6 minute songs into 10-15 minute songs. Dicking around in between songs is fine. Extending an instrumental bit of a song or a solo is fine so long as you manage to not disrupt the flow of the song in the process. Constantly bringing the song to a stop and adding a slow wank-fest in the middle of it when there was no slow wank-fest before completely ruining the flow and urgency of the song is like a slap in the face to everyone there. They had similar problems even back when they were still with ATDI. The band was so busy running around being 'intense' that they weren't actually able to play the songs and make them sound good. Hell, Dillinger Escape Plan can run around like idiots, roll around on the floor and still play THEIR songs in perfect time, why is it so hard for these guys to do the same? Argh. These guys make me sad.

I agree about Deloused being awesome. I disagree about the live shows being shit. I've seen a few performances and was blown away.. but maybe I just got some bad stuff. I don't know.

It's funny how you say "bad stuff" when it's better than normal. Did Cedric actually sing like on the album? And did they not break away from the songs into an annoying amount of wanking around? Maybe I'll see if I can find some other videos sometime.

I haven't listened to my ATDI CDs in ages. Anyone wanna buy them off me?

Does this explain the lack of MV whoring lately?

Nieh, I'm pretty sure Dave loves guitar wanking.

As far as I went with that band was dowloading "The Widow".

There's nothing wrong with guitar wanking in general. It's when they break up the flow of a song and make slow, dark, "moody" noise and wank around for a few minutes for no reason that it sucks because it doesn't work with the song.

Jebus...?

That was off their shitty Frances the Mute album. Check out Drunkship of Lanterns or Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt from their first album.

Mind uploading a video? I think I know what you mean by those boring, moody, and unnecessary wank-solos but I'd still like to see it. Extended solos are pretty cool when it still sounds like it's part of the song but in some cases, it just sounds bad.

Jebus...?
yes, just experimenting a bit

I would upload a video if I had one on my hard drive. I'm trying to get one off Soulseek now and am hoping it's one of the ones I've seen before.

I only have Francis the Mute, and I thought it was pretty good, but I haven't heard any of their older stuff, either. If anyone wants to be cool and upload some good songs pre-Francis the Mute, it would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Deloused was awesome. I haven't heard Frances the Mute and never particularly wanted to.

I saw them live at a SOAD concert, and I never listened to them, and I'm keeping it that way. Their preformance was terrible. I know what you mean with the wanking around. I never heard any of their songs, yet I knew when they were wanking around. The worst thing is that there were no rests in between songs, it all seemed like one big ass, crappy song.

I would upload Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt as well, but this one took me forever for some reason so I'm not going to bother.

I don't really have a big opinion on the Mars Volta. I tend to stay away from those kind of quasi-pretentious arthouse bands. I can live with them; I can live without them.
The song that was all over music tv last year (can't remember the name) was pretty quality. Nice and energetic.
