Fainting Spells is the only one from the Decemberunderground sessions, and it doesn't really sound like anything on DU at all. 100 Words is from the Sing The Sorrow sessions, and the other 4 are Crash Love session songs.

So first you say it's not that good, but then you proceed to give all songs very good scores, except two songs that weren't on the album at all?

The chorus of 100 Words is one of those things I just have to sing along with <3.

Fainting Spells is fun. Where We Used to Play is whatever. I hate We've Got the Knife.

I really think Jade Puget is about the only thing I like about this band anymore, but I really like him a lot. AFI grew by leaps and bounds when he joined, in no small part because he's allegedly the principal songwriter. I'm also beginning to realize that he's a damn good guitarist.

they "headlined" the give it a name festival in london a few years ago but i dont think its on the same scale. they were kinda just the last band on the bill and didnt do anything special in the way for example metallica or green do during their shows. to me, they dont have quite the arena style shows yet but have also gone too far away from the smaller venues!

Was it Davey singing instead of screaming? Cause I THINK I heard it, just once, back when the song first debuted.

AFI was good before they went major. Try listening to albums like Art of Drowning and Black Sails in the Sunset. They are much better than the three last, Sing the Sorrow, Decemberunderground and Crash Love.

Although this has been discussed multiple times, I still think that while the early AFI albums were really good, the newer(major) ones are still not that bad... my opinion:

Sing The Sorrow - great
Decemberunderground - horrible
Crash Love - good

Whoa, I'm liking this. Surprisingly.

It's pretty clear their time doing the BlaqkAudio stuff has had an effect on how they approach stuff, it's even more in that electronic direction than Sing The Sorrow and Decemberunderground, but not in a bad way. It's surprisingly heavy too, compared to their post-Art Of Drowning stuff.

In all honesty I'd totally forgotten about AFI, haven't listened to them in years. STS was kinda-sorta okay, but starting down a path I didn't appreciate, and Decemberunderground was about 70% dogballs. But this is pretty rad, like a more intense STS track with more electronics.

OC HAU

I can see Black Audio and NIN influences too.

It is some kind of continuation and progression since STS, but STS probably won't be surpassed. It could be an interesting album though. Can't wait.

The single is probably specific and the whole album won't be like that.

What about those manly, 100% heterosexual, rough vocals? :D

I never got all the love for STS. The arrangements are all way more in-depth and less juvenile punk-y, and the last couple of songs totally destroy, but a lot of the songwriting on it just went way into that "we sound like all the other emo bands that are starting to get popular in 2002/2003" vibe. I don't mind that it's less heavy, just that it kind of lost a bit of the AFI "feel".

jacknife737

Eh, i'm not all that into this - though I can definitely see the NIN influence. I prefer it when their influences are more Joy Division esque.

I was totally one of those who fell in love with STS, but looking back, I like Black Sails and Art of Drowning almost as much.

I'm not all into the new song. I actually don't like the fact that it sounds like NIN. I thought "Sacrilege" was the best song on Crash Love; it actually reminded me of AOD-era AFI. It's very, very rare that a band can actually remind me of a time that they were... well... better. I hope there's at least one song like that on their upcoming album.

On the other hand, if a band can genuinely pull off a brand new sound and excel at it, then I'm always all for that. That's kind of what "Sing the Sorrow" did for me. Thus far, I'm not feelin' it with this new song.

I guess I have the unpopular opinion here in thinking that it's a great song! It's shocking to me when people are disappointed by creative arrangements, haha. This song sounds fantastic and I'm looking forward to this album - hopefully it's gonna be a lot better than the last two.

Eskimo/Venom, it sounds like you haven't heard CrashLove? You seem to be talking about DecemberUnderground like it's their most recent.

Also, I still really like STS. But maybe equally with AOD and BSIS.

Yeah, I'd even take most of the douchey trupunx pre-Black Sails stuff over the last two discs.

Damn, ultra hate for CrashLove ;) My album ranking is as such:

1.1) Black Sails
1.2) Art of Drowning
1.3) Sing the Sorrow (those three are pretty close to tied, though)
2) CrashLove
3) DecemberUnderground
4) Very Proud of Ya, Shut Your Mouth, Answer That

Basically, BSIS/AOD/STS are albums I frequently will listen to on their own, or all three in a row. CrashLove I will occasionally listen to on its own, but it often makes it into my AFI playlists. DecemberUnderground never gets listened to on its own, but does make it into playlists. The three early albums pretty much never get listened to at all. I'd actually probably be content if BSIS/AOD/STS were the only AFI albums in my collection, to be honest.

I wish lots of other bands could pull off such an impressive album. It's their peak for me. BS and AOD are great, but it's clear they haven't mastered it all musically. On DU and CL they are trying different things with questionable results.

STS is definitely solid, and it's kind of still bridging their classic two albums with the newer "not for me" stuff, it's still recognizably very AFI which I like. And the arrangements are good. It's just the point where the "you're losing me" elements started to creep in.

Same here, aside from a couple of songs. Also it was once pointed out to me that the mixing was kinda bad too, so now I always notice it when I hear a song from it.

I like both songs. I Hope You Suffer embraces a new direction while still keeping some elements of past stuff like Sing The Sorrow, which is pretty cool. 17 Crimes is pretty solid too. It sounds a little bit like Alkaline Trio to be honest. Not that that's a bad thing; I like them too.

We have three new songs so far, and my thoughts are:

I Hope You Suffer - Fantastic. It reminds me of the STS era, even though not quite THAT good.

17 Crimes - Also really good. More modern than the first one, but well done.

A Deep Slow Panic - Kinda boring. It's not bad, but definitely my least favorite of the group. Reminds me of the less interesting parts of CrashLove.

01. The Sinking Night 9/10 Similar to STS intro with some Black Sails ringing guitar.
02. I Hope You Suffer 9.5/10
03. A Deep Slow Panic 10/10 I don't think it's boring. It fits album well. It's pure.
04. No Resurrection 9/10 Some squeaky guitars and weird vocals.
05. 17 Crimes 9.5/10
06. The Conductor 10/10 Pretty impressive.
07. Heart Stops 10/10 So cute.
08. Rewind 9.5/10 Kinda cool vocals.
09. The Embrace 10/10 Impressive vocals.
10. Wild 10/10 Fast and neat.
11. Greater Than 84 8/10 Some interesting guitar at the beginning and end, otherwise nothing special.
12. Anxious 8/10 Nothing special.
13. The Face Beneath the Waves 10/10 I like the title. Great drums and vocals. Interesting and odd song.

Heart Stops and Wild surprised me so I'd say they are the best tracks. I think it's a really good album with consistent quality.
