Seriously, I never thought someone from a famous band would have the education that Holland has, what with the pHD in microbiology, his aerial experience, and all that good stuff. He's able to do all of that and write songs that thousands can relate to. That says something. When I first learned about all his success behind the band, it just made me like The Offspring even more. Anybody else have that happen to them?

Um, I don't believe he actually got his doctorate.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I'm definitely am not making it up. Just restating somebody else's words. Whether they be true or false is another thing in itself, and has no connection to me.

I know he came close, but I don't think he actually earned it yet. Maybe he should... After the new album and tour, of course! :p

He hasn't gotten his Ph D yet. He put his studies on hold to focus on the band.

That's what i thought. I think he should go back and get his doctorate. It could help boost his image a lot.

Um, I don't believe he actually got his doctorate.
He got a Masters, and I think a doctorate. Doctorate is different than PH.D right?

Well, I remember hearing an interview with him, it was in Australia.

Interviewer: So I heard you got your PH.D?
Dex: No.
I: So you're a dumb nerd!
D: Well, I have a doctorate!

It was something like that.

doctorate and phd are not the same thing. phd is a step above doctorate. microbiology is an insane thing to get a degree in.... even just an undergraduate degree. anthropology IS a pussy degree when compared with microbio! haha. Dexter is one smart dude. What did greg graffin get his degree in? did he get anything above his undergrad?

it's awesome that greg k was going for finance and wanted to be a lawyer... also awesome that james lilja quit the band to become a doctor. who wants the guy who wrote "beheaded" as their doctor?? not I :P

i think he's a brilliant person, no matter if he got his final degree or not, i couldn't even understand a single word in a book about microbio :D and he can surf and fly a plane and write songs and sing and play many musical instruments . . .
and he is also an example for any other rockstars because he takes time to write to his fans :) .

No, doctorate and PhD are the same thing. I have no idea what Dexter was on if he said that in that interview, but they are the same thing.

And to go with what was said earlier--Greg Graffin got his PhD recently, and Milo Auckerman from the Descendents actually left the band after getting his PhD in genetics.

What did greg graffin get his degree in?

I believe he got a PhD in zoology and a masters in geology...but I might be mistaken

I think that^ is right, though I thought anthropology was in there somewhere...I know his PhD in zoology only tangentially fit into the zoology department. If I remember correctly, it sort of encompasses several academic departments including anthro.

phd is post doc. what else is a post doc doing?

and microbio is not easy even if you like it. I love it to pieces and it's still hard for me.

While the Ph.D. is the most common doctoral degree, and even often (mis)understood to be synonymous with the term “doctorate,” the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) recognize numerous doctoral degrees as equivalent, and do not discriminate between them.

it's kinda confuse but microboilogy is hard sure it is!!eheh....but i mean...when someone are at university studying something like that it's because he/she likes

i still have to study micro and others biologys and some are harders than others but when you like it's always easier....imagine studying something you hate....it's horrible

for me genetics is the most difficult one but you know...i like it anyway and for me it's ok...i just have to study it more lol

meh to an extent. I love science... and I was studying biology/genetics/ecology evolution and behavior for 3 1/2 years. I loved it, but it was so damn hard. I just couldn't do it. I think that how it works is that, everyone's brain works a certain way, so certain things are easier than others... and you tend to like the things you're good at. And dexter seems to be right and left brained- good at music AND science :)
