Did anyone notice the rat on the statue's left shoulder on the back cover? I just noticed it and I've had the cd for a year and a half at least.

On the UK advert for the album, the rat crawled out of the inside of the statues body... and your a tad unobservant if its taken you 2 years to spot it....

I wonder what the whole cover means.. The statue symbolizes something old and beautiful, the head explodes, symbolizing destruction, the flower symbolizes something NEW and beautiful, and the rat symbolizes oncoming destruction..

Don't rats usually symbolise plague?

whoa... I never noticed that, either... and it's pretty big and obvious... I bet it either represents that it was trapped in the statue, or it represents that the statue has been there for a very long time and is not in a great place, a place where rats are.

this gives me an idea for another thread...

I will say that it'd be sweet if it had to do with TMNT. I'd give the offspring mad props for that subtle tie. Although, the offspring didn't design the cover... some professionals did, and the offspring chose it... so I doubt it has anything to do with the album name.

You just owned yourself. Plague is destruction.

(yes i know i'm crazy for not owning splinter, but i know all the songs on it so what does it matter)

They probably had a say on the idea of the album cover

well they pick which art they want, but if youi know how it works on major labels... basically, professional designers make a whole ton of album designs- there are millions. the band goes through these (or their producer, depends on how active the band is. the offspring probably chooses, though) and selects one.

so??? that still means they get a say in it

You just owned yourself. Plague is destruction.

Plague is a widespread affliction or calamity, especially one seen as divine retribution.

Destruction is:

The act of destroying.
The condition of having been destroyed.
The cause or means of destroying: weapons that could prove to be the destruction of humankind.

helloooooo dictionary.com ;)

and since we're quoting that site, the second definition of plague says " A sudden destructive influx or injurious outbreak" which includes destruction.

and original pranksta, I didn't say that they don't have any say in the album art... they don't get to say "hey let's put a rat on the shoulder of the statue to represent such and such". the rat was there when they picked the cover out.

They did pick the cover, but bands dont go into some magical cover art room and pick from millions of possible covers, they hire an artist or photographer of their choice, and explain to them (sometimes exactly) what they want, the photographer will usualy come back and approch the band with several of his approches to it, they then pick one.
The band may very well have spawned the entire broken statue and/or rat idea.

Why does it matter what it's about. I don't even really look at the details on covers, I buy the CD for its music.

I noticed the rat right when I saw the back cover for first time. He's so cute. ^_^ Maybe it really has something to do with Splinter from Ninja Turtles. Maybe he's Dexter's favourite cartoon character. :D LMAO

50 Cent's CD, The Massacre. His son's favorite cartoon is TMNT and they tried to make 50 look like one on the cover.
