I suck at math in a different language. I don't understand half of the words. So I stopped after making 1, 3, 4 and 5. Got them all correct though.

Now, I don't have a problem with my maths at all, but I do have a problem with questions I feel are worded badly. Does #1 mean 5 multiplied by x? I'm guessing yes, as that's the only way the question would work.

And also, what does ^ mean? I've never encountered that symbol before. I'm going to assume they mean divide as I have no other idea.

EDIT: Nope, reading the possible answers ^ makes sense to mean multiply.

Shit no. Those I understood were way easy but with the rest I don't understand the English terms AND some of the signs because in my time and place we used slightly different ones. So fuck you, West. Too bad, I wanted to ace this.

It means that the number before is put to the power of the number after.

5^2 = 5 squared = 25.

It means that the number before is put to the power of the number after.

5^2 = 5 squared = 25.
Why is it we weren't taught that in MY year 8 maths class? Either way, that cost me a point.

Tizzalicious

Thanks. khkhkh I don't wanna!

I just asked my mom, she told me it was this (I don't know how to explain in English, or at all, but I'll try)

After 2 years, it's 121%, that's 1.21

After 2 years it's (x)squared = 1,21

That means x = 1,10

which means the answer is 10%.

Now see if this is correct. Let's say we start with 100.

10% of 100 = 10, so after a year it'd be 110.

10 % of 110 = 11, so after 1 years it's 121.

Which is correct.

I think, I don't know how to explain better, I don't understand why 1,10 meant it's 10% either =/ But it does work that way!

Thanks Quickmath! :D (http://www.quickmath.com/)

Edit 2: I noticed that 6/10 or lower is an F. 7/10 or higher is an A+. One question can lead you to that much of a difference.

Median = put all numbers in order, the median is the number in the middle of the list (Middle/Medium - Median)

I got #6 and #2 wrong. Seriously, what the heck is the difference between median, mode, and all those m-words that have something to do with algebra?

Mode = what there's the most of

Median = if you line all the numbers up in order, it will be the middle number. If there are two middles, you take the average of both.

Mean = the average of any set of given numbers

For Quartiles you take the median of the numbers up to the median and the median of the numbers after it. Same rules apply if there are two.

The only time the quartiles and median are used are in 'box and whisker plots' which fail anyways.

Rocky-girl

mode and median are rarely used in practice.

They use mode when talking about the income of people in a country though. At least they do here. So you can say if you earn more less than...mode? I don't know if that's the way to say it.

T-6005
02-28-2006, 11:58 PM
That's kind of a weird system. Wouldn't they use some form of the average that takes out a few of the extremes for the standard wage?

Mode would just be the biggest amount of population that earns the same wage. Say in a 12 million person country, 500,000 people earned $30,000/year. Even if the average person earned far below that, spread out, so that no other 500,000 people had the same exact wage per year (if, for example, it was a poor country and government jobs paid extremely well, or some other such scenario), you would have 30,000 as the per capita wage?

As you can see, I'm not quite getting you.

To me that doesn't make sense. I could see mode being a somewhat reliable statistic when comparing salaries within individual companies, but I don't think mode would necessarily be indicative of an average income for an objective population.

Tizzalicious

It has nothign top do with getting me, I'm not the one who does that, it's just the system.

It makes sense that they don't use the average though, because some people earn a LOT and that would totally fuck it up. I think they just use it for people to see if they make more, or less than most people do. They don't really base anything on it. It's just like...is thise a good paying job, or not. Do we make more than most people, or less? And they use it when they say things like...if they changed something about taxes, they will say that it's especially good//bad for people who earn more//less than mode. (I still don't know how that word is used!). Or to compare to other countries maybe? Do most people here earn more or less than in another country?

I didn't mean they say the mode is the income per capita, just use it for different things. But they do use it.
