i have an mp3 player, but its not an ipod

to answer someones question a few posts up, an ipod is a mp3 player made by apple, which means you can download music files or rip cds to your computer and put them on it. its very small and you can fit a few hundred to several thousand songs on each, depending on the size you want and the cash you have. they are just great for portable music because instead of carrying hundreds of cds with you they are all on that little machine

I've got a Creative MuVo 2 - I was going to get the iPod mini but the MuVo beats the hell out of it - 14 hour battery life, great sound, 4 gig capacity (same as the mini in this case),digital FM radio and recording and tiny too. Piccy:

http://www.creative.com/iss/images/products/headers/prod10659_hdr_1_6_1.jpg

4 gig might not sound like much, but I've got about 700 song son it with about 1.5 gig still free, and that's my entire music collection. 40 gig would be a little pointless for me :)

I like having music I don't listen to better than having music I'm intimately familiar with. It's like having a backup plan in case I ever realize that I actually hate all this shit.

Anyway, my entire collection equals upwards of about 50 gigs...maybe half of which I could hum for you from memory.

JohnnyNemesis
04-24-2008, 05:22 PM
I have 35GB of music, which is just under 8,000 songs on my computer. And I'm actually quite intimate with the vast majority of it all, mostly because, unlike most people, when an album grows old I don't consider it a case of "whoa this album just isn't as good as I thought!" (which is really fucking dumb), I consider it a case of "okay, I wore this album out, I'll get back to it when I'm in the right mood". So I have lots on here.

But yeah, wtf?

XYlophonetreeZ
04-24-2008, 07:56 PM
I don't notice sound quality unless it's really really fucking shitty. I can't say I want to either. I don't want to train myself to hear all the nuances of high sound quality, because then I'll be thereafter unable to listen to anything of lower quality. I've seen that happen to people. I have a friend who feels compelled to buy all of the new speakers and keyboard equipment whenever it comes out. It's an excellent way to spend a lot more unnecessary money

Llamas
04-24-2008, 11:10 PM
I have around 90 some gigs of music. I'm familiar with nearly all of it (there are a few soundtracks I'm not super close with), and I know most of it "intimately". I just happen to have a very broad/vast taste in music... which makes me generally laugh when people say I have a good or bad taste in music... it's so broad that I think it's impossible to qualify how good or bad it is as a whole, haha.

But yeah. I actually have a really hard time when I fill my Zune... it holds 30 GB, and I've always got it filled, but I have to switch it up a lot because there's always something I want to listen to that's not on there. So I have all my music for a reason, and every few months I'll delete a few GB that I don't really listen to much anymore... but it always gets replaced very very quickly.

I got my silver 2GB Cubismo limited edition iPod for my 17th birthday and I just love it. I mostly use it when going to school or when I sleep during the class. Some would say 2GB is not much but it's enough for me. I often change the music on it since I listen to all kinds of stuff. From clasical music to jazz, punk rock and even metal.

protip: it'll work fine tomorrow. there's a bug in the clock drivers so that it won't work on any day of the year greater than 365 -- meaning today, the 366th day of the year since 2008 is a leap year. tomorrow will be 1/1/09 and then it'll work fine.

but seriously, how was a bug this laughably easy to detect allowed to make it into a unit that was produced in the hundreds of thousands?

I was a bit confused how this was possible because Zunes as far as I knew didn't have clocks. Just found out few minutes ago a recent firmware update finally gave it one, so that explains that. My zune is most likely fine seeing how I haven't given it an update in a while.

Llamas
12-31-2008, 08:26 PM
Yeah, Zune didn't have clocks until maybe... a month ago? There was a firmware update that gave us games, a new look, and options including a clock. That's probably why they didn't anticipate the bug- because the clock was so new. SK8rocka, you're an idiot.

I found a first gen. black Nano two years ago on a ski trip. It worked fine and everything, which was surprising since it was in a puddle under a layer of ice when I found it. When I got home I was trying to put my own music on it, but since i didn't have iTunes, or a clue as to what I was doing, I fucked it up and it just started showing a "sad" iPod icon every time I turned it on. Two months ago I gave it to my friend in the hope that he could go into iTunes and restore it. He said he can't so I just gave up hope on it, I didn't even ask for it back.

I only have like 4gigs of music :(.

I got the Creative Zen and it got stolen. That was a 30GB and I looooved it.

Then I bought my sister's 1GB iPod off her. I used it the entire time I was in Austria, and pretty much hated it, but had no other option. I wasn't going to buy another player while I was there, because they're way more expensive than they are here.

Last Christmas, my step dad bought me the 30GB Zune. I just haven't gotten rid of the iPod because, like I said, I keep it as a back up. I hate when I use it, though, and I avoid it unless I have a long car ride and can't use the Zune for whatever reason.

haha I love how many threads we've had about mp3 players... but my two cents on the Zen (yet again)...

Creative Zens are easily the best option out there. Zens are compatible with virtually every type of music and video file, the software is so much more logical than Microsoft's or Apple's, you can make playlists directly on the player instead of making them on the computer ahead of time, radio and voice recorder are built in.

The newest Zens reportedly have the best video players out there, as well. The newest version is extremely light, they look way better than they used to (and in my opinion, better than other players), AND it has a memory card slot.

The only arguments really for the iPod are the touch screen (and click wheel for those who like that, but I've always hated the click wheel).

Oh, I also forgot that the Zen's largest size these days is 32GB. They used to make some 60GB ones and such, but I guess they stopped.

The 16GB Zen is now like $179... and it's the size of a credit card. I really want one. But THAT would be redundant, haha.

I had a Creative Zen Stone Plus - but lost it last year. Was so fucking small, and I had problems transferring music. The software sucked I thought.

This is the one I have now. It's also small, but longer and thinner than the Zen was. I really like this one, except it uses AAA batteries instead of the "recharging" in your USB port.

Zens are compatible with virtually every type of music and video file

You should check out some of Cowon's products.

Video:
Format: AVI, WMV, ASF, MP4, MKV, OGM, MPG/MPEG, DAT, MTV
Codec: DivX 3.11/4/5/6, XviD, MPEG4 SP/ASP, WMV 9/8/7, H.264 MP, M-JPEG, MPEG1
Audio:
Format: MP3/2/1, WMA, ASF, FLAC, OGG, M4A, MKA, AC3, TTA, APE, MPC, WV, WAV
Codec: MPEG1 Layer 1/2/3, WMA, FLAC, OGG Vorbis, OGG FLAC, APPLELossless, AAC, AC3, True Audio, Monkey Audio, MusePack, WavPack, G.726, PCM

The audio and video quality on all their players is fanastic, but all the bonus features are just okay (and they're a bit on the expensive side). I own the Q5W (http://www.cowonglobal.com/product_wide/product_Q5W_feature.php) with the GPS cradle. It's a little bigger than most people prefer, but it doesn't bother me all (my cell phone also doubles as an mp3 player if I ever need something tiny for some reason). It's nice, because it has windows on it you can put some games and stuff on it (the old LucasArts games work awesome since it's touch screen, and you can plug a controller into the USB port and play SNES games and can even hook it up to your tv to play them on there) but the type of processor used seriously limits your options. Also, the wifi totally sucks, but that wasn't at all what I bought it for.

The stone has a screen that lists what song you're listening to and such, but it looks hard to navigate. As I said before, Creative should be avoided for small mp3 players, though.

That player is pretty much equally as sexy as the new Zen. I constantly consider selling my Zune and getting me the new Creative Zen, but that one looks like a hot contender. However, the memory card slot in the new Zen is almost reason enough to get it.

Oh, but I hate touch screen... that would also be a reason for me to get a Zen.

Cowon has a non-touch screen player as well. I was actually debating between the Q5W and the A3 (http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/cowon/a3/) for a while (both are hard drive based and come in 40, 60 and 80GB sizes), but the A3 doesn't have any real bonus features and I really liked the idea of the GPS cradle and being able to play games so I went with the Q5W. Most of their players are known for being the best out there with regards to sound/video quality and codec support, but most review sites knock them down a few notches due to things like UI issues (all of the ones I read about with the Q5 were fixed maybe a month after release with firmware updates) or "meh" performance with regards to its bonuses (like the wifi) mixed with the high prices (which have gotten more reasonable lately). The two they released just a few weeks ago seem to be getting really good reviews across the board, but they're both more bare-bones with regards to features and are touch screen so I'm not sure how thrilled you'd be with them.

I sound like a Cowon salesman.

lol, I tend to feel like a Creative salesperson a lot...

High price is a big issue to me, which was actually the biggest reason I went with the Zune last time. It's definitely the cheapest- but still quality- player out there. What are the UI issues?

I do generally like features on my players (radio, voice recorder, making playlists ON the device, changing the backgrounds/wallpapers, etc)... Creative is a company that's basically known for being sound geniuses, so their sound quality is tough to contend with, and they tend to include all the features I could ever ask for. At some point, I'd like to get more familiar with the wifi features on my Zune, though. Cause I'm pretty sure the Zune has the best wifi out there on mp3 players.

The complaints I read about the Q5W UI were stupid things like the screen not being responsive, but all of them were fixed by the time I bought it myself so I never experienced any of them. My only complaint with the design/UI is that considering how big the screen is, they really should've made some of the things bigger than they are. Most specifically the album art, but some of the text and options as well. You sometimes need to use the stylus as opposed to your finger which really isn't a huge deal since they give you one and a spot in the player to slide it into when you're not using it. The Q5W has a built in mic for sound recording, has a radio (though the headphones need to be plugged in for it to work since it uses them as the antenna, which means you can't listen to it with the built-in speakers), you can make a playlist on the device, but you can only have one playlist (this doesn't bother me since I don't use playlists, but it might be a problem for you). You're able to change the background/themes on the player as well, but Cowon doesn't provide any other than the main one, you'll have to get them from fansites or create one yourself. This is actually the case with all of the games/programs you can run on there as well which is both good and bad. The bad side is that you'll have to do a little digging to find things that will run (their fansite forums are a good place for that). The good side of this is that it's easy to get the games for free (the console emulator you can find emulates everything from NES to GBA to SNES and Sega, you would download that and roms just like you would for your computer) and the SCUMM emulator let's you play the old point and click Lucasarts games which are easy enough to find torrents of and are a lot of fun. Also, I only learned this recently but apparently you can tag songs with their lyrics that will play back in sync with the song (if it can't find a tag online, you can make one yourself which is a hassle, but is still a really neat feature).
I actually had hardware trouble with my first Q5W right from the first couple weeks I owned it, and it ended up totally crapping out on me after a few months, but Cowon replaced it for free even though I was well out of the basic 30 day warranty. I haven't had any problems with the replacement. It's definitely not a flawless player, but it's awesome at all the things I wanted it for, so I'm happy with it. When I have it hooked up to my car stereo it seriously sounds like I'm listening to my cds, and some of the audio-enhancements can actually make the songs sound even better.

Well, Mr. Cowon Salesrep, you've virtually sold me. Honestly, when I'm ready to buy a new player, this will definitely be considered alongside the Zen. The radio on the Zen is the same, bty... you have to use the earbuds that come with it for the antennae. Otherwise, it generally seems to have a lot of similar features, besides the memory card slot. The touch screen would have to take some getting used to, but I could probably learn to deal with it considering it has a stylus.

Like most of the Creative's owners (larger MP3's), I'm really happy of my product. I bought a 8G last june at about 130$ (CAD), which is pretty cheap compared to other brands. Adding music is really easy, you don't absolutely need the Creative program on your computer to add songs. I'm doing it with Windows Media Player and it combines perfectly.

The interface of the MP3 is really nice and easy to use (You find easily the songs you're looking for). The only problems I have sometimes is to add the album pictures that goes with the songs, but it's a detail. You can watch movies (but the screen is a little bit smaller than Ipod). There's a SD slot also, if you need more space. The battery lasts me for about a week without recharge (I listen to it about 1-2 hours a day)

I'd rather keep that MP3 instead exchanging it for an Ipod personnally.
It might be better to get another pair of earphones, those that comes with the MP3 aren't as good as what you can get from others.
I found it also pretty resistant. Once I was in a soccer stadium, we were jumping while singing, and it fell from my pocket to the wet floor. I jumped on it (under the front of my foot, I'm lucky all my weight wasn't there:D). Luckily I had the earphones rolled around, and it still worked like if nothing happened. It also survived many times when I accidentally dropped it.

...just fyi, it's not an mp3, it's an mp3 player. An mp3 is a song file.

Most players get frustrating as far as getting the album art on there. I've never had much luck with any of my players (zune, ipod, or creative zen).

The headphones that come with any player do tend to be pretty crappy. Get some nice ones.

And yes, Creative's players are the most resistant that I've come across. iPods are the least (especially for surface scratches and such).

Oh, and by the way, most players by now have options around using their software. But yes, Creative is the easiest to get around that with, because it works with virtually EVERYTHING.

I have a Creative Zen Vision: M 30GB because it's much better than an iPod.
iPod is overrated and mostly just fashion.

EDIT: I agree very much with both Ilovellamas and ZeQuebecois (except for the album picture thing, I'm able to that with no problems).
