I hope this is not too obvious, but "Self Esteem" and "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" sound alot alike.

it's been talked about numerous times before. It also has the same riff as Little Things by Bush and some song by Boston.

As soon as I clicked on this thread, Self Esteem came on the radio.

Probably because I requested it five minutes ago.

yea this has been talked about before, and they sound alike because Dexter was a pretty big Nirvana fan.
also notice that this song did come out in the post-grunge era of '94 and its not all that coincidential.

They are two completely different songs.... and they sound completely different for me at least.

Who cares though? Why are we discussing about it? What is a internet? Why am I staring at this monitor? I'm trapt inside, helllppp.

The riff used in those songs is a pretty standard riff in rock that a lot of bands use, and change to fit whatever they're doing. If you listen close enough, "Smells Like Team Spirit" is just a sped up version of the opening riff of "Louie, Louie". Or at least it sounds that way to me.

Yes, the famous riff has been used in four major hit songs.

They are all 4 chord riffs and have the same rhythm for the most part.
Boston- More Than A Feeling (http://ramk.net/files/riff/Boston.mp3) (1976)
Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit (http://ramk.net/files/riff/Nirvana.mp3) (1991)
The Offspring- Self Esteem (http://ramk.net/files/riff/Offspring.mp3) (1994)
Bush- Little Things (http://ramk.net/files/riff/Bush.mp3) (1994)

Nirvana and Boston at the same time (http://ramk.net/files/riff/Nirvana-Boston.mp3)

Nirvana and Offspring at the same time (http://ramk.net/files/riff/Nirvana-Offspring.mp3)

It's a standard riff. Like the "I Want Candy Riff".

The riffs are nothing alike. Completely different chord progression. You're all morons.

This is a thread for non-musicians. Can you at least see why they might think that they're similar, from a musically uneducated perspective?

They have the same rhythm, but that's about it. Just listen to the clip I posted of Self esteem and Teen Spirit playing at the same time.

If by "musically uneducated" you mean "tone deaf"

There is definitely some similarity between them. The only one I couldn't connect immediately to the others was Little Things by Bush. They're the same strumming pattern, just the chords are different.

I noticed similarities in the rhythms, but they are definately not that similar. But then again, I know nothing about guitars/chords/riffs/whatever, so don't ask me. I'm strictly a drumming/vocals guy (even though I can't sing worth a damn).
