View Full Version : Ladies and Gentlemen: I have a question.

My question is a computery one. No doubt the answer is so mind-numbingly easy that I'll look like a complete idiot for even asking, but I'm at the end of my tether.

It's about avatars.

More importantly, it's about my avatar. Well, my potential future avatar, and it goes:

How do I make normal pictures small enough to fit the outrageous criteria set for avatars in this BBS? I know there are sites out there that allow you to make small pics large and what not, but I can't find anything that allows you to convert a big-ass picture into a little diddy picture. Is the only answer to this me getting photoshop? And if it is, is there a way I can get photoshop without having to bloody sign up and pay?

Cheers m'dears.

I use MS paint, and it shows.

That's what I tried to use (paint). However, I want to actually reduce the size of the pictures and not just take a 80 x 80 square off it.

If you upload it to imageshack, it can automatically resize it, but the smallest thing they have is 100x75. You can use paint, you can use photoshop (which you can download on just about any file sharing thing), or I'm sure there are some websites you can use to do it there.

And you CAN resize the picture in paint. Select whatever it is you want with the box-select tool, then grab one of the corners of the selection with your mouse and you can resize it. Or select whatever it is you want with the box-select tool, click the Image menu at the top, then click stretch and skew and you can shrink it in there.

Infarnview (http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2192-10021962.html) is pretty simple. Open a pic with the program and click on Image-Resize/Resample and just type in the dimensions you want.

Right, I had a little mess with some picture I have on my computer with MS Paint. it does indeed work, but it makes the pic go really damn fuzzy. Anyway, keep on with the suggestions.

Oh, and: I can't use any file sharing programmes as my university connection is ghey. Also, I don't want to sign up to anything as that always causes hassle. However, if my only option is to sign up and download something I will...As long as it is FREE.

But I see you already got the avatar.

That's perfect thanks buddy. This thread can now die a peaceful death.

Aye it's a cracker.

Oh, the thread is reviving: This IrfanView thing seems to only like converting pictures into BMP format...Which this bloody site doesn't like. Ahem, how do I change from BMP to JPG?

Ooh, by the way, getting Adobe Photoshop isn't a problem. You can download it for free using pretty much any downloading software. That's what I use to resize pics.

Just realizing that I'm Avatar-less.

for the record, i use imagemagick which makes it as easy as "convert originalimage.jpg --resize 80x80 newfile.jpg"

Heyyyyyy I've cracked it. Andy wins. Now, to search for a good pic.

The can of worms, oh, it has been opened.

on paint your can edit the size by percentaging the pic
