I searched this, and I didn't come up with anything... my question is, what's the history of manic subsidal? I mean, greg and dexter couldn't get into the social D concert, so they went and bought instruments and formed manic subsidal, right? Who else was in that group, and what did they all play? And does anyone know why Manic Subsidal became The Offspring? Was James Lilja part of Manic Subsidal?

All I know is...

If I'm not mistaken, Manic Subsidal started out with Dexter, Greg and James Lilja in 1984. Later, Noodles joined, and the band soon changed its name to The Offspring.

I remember ages ago I had this site with all this information about them, I'll try and look for it.

Oh and also...

Dexter and Greg formed Manic Subsidal along with two other cross-country teammates. One night in 1984 they failing to get in a Social Distortion show. At the time, the two didn't even own instruments, much less know how to play them. "Bryan and I both learned together," says Kriesel, "and he wasn't even playing chords at the time, so he'd play on one string, and I tried to do the same thing. By the summer we were actually playing songs, but it took a while."

Just a bit I found on the net.

The Offspring started as a garage band in Orange County, Carlifornia whith the name Manic Subsidal. After some members change they decided to change the name to The Offspring (offspring to Manic Subsidal). It was Greg Kriesel and Bryan Dexter Holland that started the band in 1983. From the beginning they called their band for Clowns Of Death. In 1984 they changed it to Manic Subsidal. Noodles started in the band as a guitar player in 1986. This is the members of the old offspring:
Doug 'kucouyf' Thompson (singer, 19841985)
Jim Benton (guitar, 19841985)
James Lilja (drums, 19851986)
Ron Welty (drums, 19862003)

if dexter and greg founded the offspring, why are neither of them listed as being in old offspring?

I'm guessing it's because they're still in the band? Al those people listed aren't in it anymore.
