Hey, everyone! wheelchairman (http://www.offspring.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=180) and I thought it would be cool to turn his "song of the week" deal to a weekly feature here on these boards. Each week, we'll make a thread sharing a few songs, sometimes with information on them.

I ask that you all keep an open mind, and try not to post too many one word responses. Try to explain why you like or dislike a song so that we can get some good conversation going!

We'll each be sharing a few songs each week, and we strongly encourage you to check them out.

Our vision is to build a stronger sense of community in this section of the forum, where everyone can check out some music they may have never heard before, and discuss it with each other, give feedback, etc. We hope you all enjoy, and don't hesitate to PM suggestions (as long as they're reasonable, sensible, and well articulated) to us!

Here are my picks for this week!

Divag - My First LSDJ Song (http://www.savefile.com/files/8083675)
Divag - Fantasy Dream (http://www.savefile.com/files/4695511)

You all may have seen these two songs in another thread. I just think that what this artist does is very interesting. He uses very little hardware to make some complex beats!

1208 - Just Anyone (http://www.savefile.com/files/6440328)

I've been uploading lots of rap, electronic, and salsa music lately...but don't think I forgot about you punk kids too! This is some awesome pop-punk from a band that, sadly, no longer exists.

AFI - Theory of Revolution (http://www.savefile.com/files/3953511)

There's been a lot of excitement over the new AFI album, so I thought I would upload a very oooold song of theirs. A blast from the past, if you will. This one is from "Very Proud of Ya", their debut on Nitro Records.

That's all for now! I might add one more if I feel so compelled, but I think four is enough for a hearty conversation. ENJOY!

Divag - My First LSDJ Song (http://www.savefile.com/files/8083675)
Holy shit this was some awesome... shit.

Divag - Fantasy Dream (http://www.savefile.com/files/4695511)
Didn't like this one as much, too video game-esque, but still good.

1208 - Just Anyone (http://www.savefile.com/files/6440328)
I liked this a lot, too, but it took a bit to get used to the vocals. Once I did it was great, though.

AFI - Theory of Revolution (http://www.savefile.com/files/3953511)
Classic AFI; heard it before, but didn't have it on my computer; love it.

I'm glad you enjoyed, AAE! The two Divag songs were both made with only a modified Game Boy, but he used some samples in the first song that he didn't use in the second.

The 1208 song was included because it was one of their more poppy songs from their debut. I'd uploaded some of their slightly harder stuff before, so I went for something slightly different from them this time.

As far as AFI goes...yeah, love that classic shit!

Is there any chance I could get some of the more hardcore 1208? I've started liking some semi hardcore stuff that I've heard. And a gameboy? That's awesome.

Cool, I'll have to download that 1208 song, I have a couple of their songs on my computer at my dorm.

JohnnyNemesis

Yes, a GameBoy! For more information, check out www.8bitpeoples.com.

As far as more hardcore 1208 goes, don't get your hopes up; it's only hardcore compared to songs like "Just Anyone", but it's still pretty much standard skate-pop-punk. Still, this song is so good that I couldn't stop listening to it for like, years.

1208 - Speak Easy (http://www.savefile.com/files/1401316)

And if you like 1208, you'll probably like Deviates as well:

Deviates - The End (http://www.savefile.com/files/6236942)

EDIT: Cool, Brett! Check out what I've added to this post and let me know if you folks are interested in more.

That's actually perfect, I still doubt I'd like straight hardcore; I'm trying to ease my way into it.

Speak Easy was one of the few I already have. It's a great song. Thanks for all the songs though

Cool, AAE...let us know what you think.

Brett; where did you get those 1208 songs from before? Were they from previous uploads of mine? If not, I'd be VERY interested in knowing where you heard of this band!

I loved the first two. It reminds me that I want to buy a gameboy, so I can remember how it was to be 10 years old again. That was teh awesomes.

1208 doesn't work for me, I don't know why.

Old school afi is not my thing. I really don't like them until Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes.

EDIT: Also, totally awesome and commendable use of BBCode there my friend.

Speak Easy's opening riff was Ace. Great Song. The End was good as well, but his voice sounded a tad whiny to me; I don't know. As a whole very good, though.

Edit: WCM, Shut Your Mouth is almost always considered oldschool AFI.

I'm soooooo glad you and so many others are into those Chiptunes! I was beginning to think I was the only one. It drove me crazy!

EDIT: Also, totally awesome and commendable use of BBCode there my friend.

I knew you'd get a kick out of that!

Edit: WCM, Shut Your Mouth is almost always considered oldschool AFI.

Yeah, but I think those who do that are slightly mistaken. Shut Your Mouth is the ultimate transitional album, and is quite different from Very Proud of Ya and Answer That and Stay Fashionable. There are strong elements of what they were and what they would become throughout the album ("A Single Second" is like the perfect combination of Very Proud of Ya and The Art of Drowning, for example), but I think that album is when they officially were no longer old school AFI.

But that's just me.

offspring kid: You're welcome! Let me know what you think of that Deviates song I uploaded too!

EDIT: Yes! Fall Apart is an awesome song! At first it was too poppy for me, but now it is one of my favorites.

JohnnyNemesis
04-18-2006, 01:50 PM
Well, my favorite 1208 songs are: "Retire", "Lightshow", "Speak Easy", "Obstructure", "Lies That Lie", "Turn of the Screw", "Fall Apart", "Next Big Thing", "All I Can Do", and "Smash the Badge".

There's a long list you can sink your teeth into!

I'm really not into any electronic music, so I won't say anything about them Divag songs.

I think you recommened me 1208 before. I'm not crazy about them, but they're enjoyable. I like this song probably a bit more than the others, although 'Outside Looking In' would still be my favorite song by them.

And I really dig the old AFI even though I haven't heard it that much. I bought Retrorespective a while ago and my top 5 songs of that album are all old songs.

Shut Your Mouth really is a transitional album. That's why I don't consider it old skool. Johnny and I share the same view there. Answer that and Very Proud of Ya have clearly much more in common. While I really got into AFI when Black Sails came out and this is really what I consider their golden stuff. Shut Your Mouth is great because it's essentially a more raw version of Black Sails. I love all the new afi albums. Although I haven't heard anything newer than Sing The Sorrow.

All About Eve

I agree on liking the newer stuff more, firstly. Second, I consider it "old school" because it's not fully transitioned yet. I agree that it is farther from the oldest stuff though.

I think Kerr sent me some of their songs. I'm probably gonna download some more.

Well expressed, Per, although Shut Your Mouth might be my least favorite AFI album (Black Sails and The Art of Drowning are my faves, and the All Hallows EP is amazing). I got into the band while Nitro was still actively promoting Very Proud Of Ya after hearing "He Who Laughs Last" and "Wake Up Call" on the "Go Ahead Punk...Make My Day" compilation. Very good stuff.

Tijs, would you like me to upload more old AFI stuff in the future?

Thibault, which album did you get from them?

Brett, I'm probably going to upload some more 1208 stuff in the next Moderator Picks thread, because they've got some strong feedback in this one.

 d00d pt gr33n d4y on there! that wold rock.

It saddens me what AFI turned into, Sing the Sorrow was so dissapointing and their new album which is 'electonic' based is sure to just rub salt in the wound. If the mods don't reject I could upload some old AFI albums.

For the meantime here's an Australian band called Frenzal Rhomb.

I agree...Sing The Sorrow is fantastic. Especially Death of Seasons and The Great Disappointment and Paper Airplanes.

The new album isn't going to be completely electronically based. There are going to be more electronic elements on the new album than on STS, but for the most part they've described it as being more of a grindcore record.

The new single, Miss Murder, uses some electronic elements, but you really can't hear them as much as the guitar.

And old school AFI, ahh that was nice. I'm happy to see the Very Proud Of Ya songs here, which I believe is the better of the two old school AFI albums. I still prefer newer AFI, though.

Probably "...But Home is Nowhere / This Time Imperfect". I didn't like them at frist, but now I don't mind them. The bonus on some, Synthesthesia, is one of my all time favorite AFI songs.
