View Full Version : Mod Pick of the Week 2: Wheelchairman Schools You in American Folk

Alright I want this to be a brief introduction into American folk music. Simply because many of you don't know where your roots come from. The problem being America is really fucking huge and everywhere has it's own roots, Jazz in the deep south to protest songs up North to whatever. I don't know, and am too lazy to care. I'm going to share with you some of my heros, Woodie Guthrie, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. They all three have something in common, they are great poets with terrible voices, which is what makes their voices so great.

Woodie Guthrie, I believe was a member of the Wobblies (the IWW, Industrial Workers of the World. Awesome group.) And a constant singer of worker's rights. He was a staunch anti-fascist as well. And generally cool. If you have never heard of him(and are an American), I want you to put your head down in shame, and look at wiki. Billy Bragg has two albums of Guthrie cover albums. And those are Billy Bragg's best stuff.
Today I share with you:

Mean Talkin' Blues (http://beta.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=F4BB5CF72890DD1A)
Great songs. If there are concepts in these songs that you don't understand, such as union scab or whatever, I highly recommend you use wikipedia to fill in the holes in your knowledge, immediately!

The next artist is Leonard Cohen. Simply because I like him a little more than the Bob Dylan songs that I have on my computer. If you've seen Natural Born Killers, then you've heard a lot of Leonard Cohen. Sure Oliver Stone sucks, but the sound track is great. The first song I will share is Diamonds in the Mine. I am addicted to this song, you either love it or you hate it, and I love it. It's also a great love song.

And the other song is more political, it's about French Partisans in world war 2, and it's half in french.
The Partisan (http://beta.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=EDE02578039ED587)

And Bob Dylan. First I'd just like to recommend to you songs like Don't Think Twice It's Alright, Rolling Stone, Mr Tambourine Man. Those songs are so much better than what I've uploaded. I only own Blonde on Blonde, which is a good album. And these are great songs too.
Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again (http://beta.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=13A02B475AFA7C78)

I've no idea if that's the full name, I will assume so. I've only heard my friend play/sing the song and he called it Chelsea Hotel. This will allow me to hear the original. Thanks, this is all stuff that I've been meaning to check out (well who hasn't hear Dylan, but the other two I'd not really)
