View Full Version : A Question.

For all the people here who like Carlos Mencia, I have a simple question: Why?

I have watched his stupid TV show a few times, and every time I end up sitting there and predicting most of the punch-lines and only laughing at him when he trys to make people think his show is so outragous and offensive. I just don't see the appeal at all, and I'd like someone to please explain it to me.

Thank you in advance.

I hate that show. That is all.

That show is almost as bad as that retard-fest "Drawn Together." Carlos Mencia's jokes aren't even funny, and he steals them from other comedians. Racially offensive does not = funny. I can't stand him.

One more thing, George Lopez owns Carlos Mencia.

I've heard most of Mencia's cds. Although he's pretty predictable, he comes up with gold every once in a while.

Mencia's jokes are about a lot more than racist stereotypes. They reveal a lot about power dynamics and questions of gaze--who is looking at whom, who has the power-the gazer or the gazed upon?, etc. If you stop taking him at face value, there's really a lot there. I love him and John Leguizamo.

I understand that concept, but just from watching his show, I really don't see that in him. I just think he says everything he says to be offensive because he thinks offensive is funny.

It doesn't matter if he means to or not, all those layers are still there.

Joke-stealin' sonovabitch. I watched one show and laughed, then saw the clips of the comedians whose jokes he stole and was mighty pissed. You just don't do that, it's fucked up and wrong.

His stuff isn't really any different from any other comedian's who focuses on racial issues and is of some ethnicity themselves. He has his own style but I've laughed more at other of the so-called "race comedians" from the US.

PS. Jakebert, I noticed you've started posting in this forum. Continue to do so! You're one of the coolest 16 yr olds I've seen on this board, it's refreshing & I've often agreed with your posts in Other Bands etc.

Since when is a non-white making racist jokes "outrageous" or "offensive"?

Anyone got any videos or links to post up? I'm really curious to see exactly how bad this guy is.

Vera, it's 17, but thank you very much.

And, Sarah Silverman is actually funny because her jokes arn't incredibly predictable. Not to sound sexist, but most female comedians don't really make me laugh, but she cracks me up.

And there are a couple more there.

I don't know. I didn't laugh, but at the same time, I didn't really think he was terrible. He was just.... talking.

That one wasn't as bad as his show.

EDIT: and the "I don't look mexican" part was kinda funny.

I don't think you get stand up comedy, Jocke.

Jakebert, well, you *were* 16 at one point and you were cool even then, so. ;p

"Jocke"? And I DO get stand up comedy, I just thought he didn't say anything funny, but he didn't really say anything boring either. He just said... things, that maybe could've been funny, but they weren't.

It was either that or Micke. Generic Swedish male name that isn't Sven or Göran. I'm not feeling very creative at the moment.
