To tell you the truth, I would've said "Tears in Heaven" if the thread starter didn't. That song's actually pretty sad. I love listening to Eric Clapton.

"...Before that steak knife took my eyes
I looked up to the sky
For the last thing I would ever see
For the last time I'd cried...

...Every step that I could barely take
Every one more difficult to make
Mr. Chainsaw came and took my legs a long, long time ago..."

I don't like Tears in Heaven much. A little overrated. And Street Spirit by Radiohead depresses me. Doesn't listening to Radiohead drive people to suicide? They seem to be so depressive.

Radiohead's music has helped me a lot during bad times. I guess some of it is depressing, but a lot of it at the same time isn't.

I'm going to see them live for my second time tomorrow night. Each to their own I guess ;)

And Street Spirit by Radiohead depresses me. Doesn't listening to Radiohead drive people to suicide? They seem to be so depressive.

It doesn't make me sad, but it does have an excellent atmospheric quality to it. One of my favourite songs ever.

Suzanne Vega's Luka is semi-depressing.

And I think the Replacements kick ass at depressings songs. Here Comes a Regular, Answering Machine, etc.

The Beer by Kimya Dawson pwns all of these. Not only is it amazing, but it's incredibly depressing. Her voice does incredible things on the track, so simply reading the following won't do it justice, but...you should get a decent idea from these lyrics:

The beer I had for breakfast was a bottle of Mad Dog
And my 20/20 vision was fifty percent off
You said punch-buggy red and punched me right in my left eye
I said don't you mean pediddle? and I lit his house on fire

He came home on acid I was holding his shotgun
I was dressed like Tina Turner in beyond thunder dome
He said don't shoot, I said I won't I love you you're my friend
I handed him my wig and shot myself in the head

Then I stuffed a box of tissues in the hole in my skull
I got in my Mazda and I drove to the mall
I got a big Johnson shirt and some silicone tits
When I pulled out the tissues they were covered with shit

And the beer I had for breakfast was a box of cheap white wine
And the boom box on my shoulder was a box of clementines
I ate every single one without noticing the mold
You said you're gross my darling, I said no I'm rock and roll

Even though I'd never ever been in a band
I got cool as black ice tattooed on my hand
And the christians gave me comic books as if I would be scared
Of burning in hell well I was already there

And the beer I had for breakfast silver bullet in the brain
And the beer I had for lunch was a bottle of night train
And the beer I had for dinner was my crazy neighbor's pills
We had to sit down on skateboards jut to make it down the hill

Then I peed my pants and you stole the groom's cigar
And some old man made me watch him masturbate locked in his car
When I got back to the apartment you were face down on the floor
You said don't go to bed yet let's go get a 64

And the beer I had had for breakfast was a pint of Jim Beam
And a fifth of peach schnapps and some warm Sunny D
And you said bottoms up just as I bottomed out
I tried to scream fuck you but blood was pouring out my mouth

Evan Dando never planned on telling you the truth
And your Leonardo ID card is your fountain of youth
You can be a teenager for your whole fucking life
Just find some pretty sucker and make that bitch your wife

I guess by now you all know my friend Danny broke his neck
He was driving home from Sirens when he got into a wreck
First I cried for him and then I cried for me
Haunted by the ghost of the girl I used to be

But the rocks with holes are warm in my hands
And I buried my toes in the hot hot sand
And the silver pink pony kisses me and says
You've come a long, long way and you deserve to be really happy

All About Eve

The beauty of Heart Attack in a Lay By, is it makes you want to cry when all the lyrics talk about are sitting on the side of a road in a car smoking and procrastinating, basically. He has car problems or something, I think.

"Father of Mine" and "Wonderful" by Everclear (but that' just for me because of how my life's going at the moment). Also "Story of a Girl" by Nine Days (which my friend got stuck in my head).

"Wonderful" is terribly depressing.
Wonderful-Everclear

I close my eyes when I get too sad
I think thoughts that I know are bad
I close my eyes and I count to ten
Hope it's over when I open them

I want the things that I had before
Like a Star Wars poster on my bedroom door
I wish I could count to ten
Make everything be wonderful again

I hope my mom and I hope my dad
Figure out why they get so mad
I hear them scream, I hear them fight
I say bad words and make them wanna cry

I close my eyes whe I go to bed and I
Dream of angels who make me smile
I feel better when I hear you say
Everything will be wonderful someday

Promises mean everything
When your little and the world is so big
I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
And tell me everything is wonderful now

I go to school and I run and play
I make believe that it's all okay
I laugh aloud so my friends won't know
But when the bell rings I just don't wanna go

I go in my room and I close my eyes and I
Make believe that I have a new life
I don't believe you when you say
Everything will be wonderful somday

Promises mean everything
When you're little and the world is so big
I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
When you tell me everything is wonderful now

No, no, no, no
I don't wanna hear you tell me everything is wonderful now
No, no, no, no
I don't wanna hear you say that I will nderstand someday
No, no, no, no
I don't wanna hear you say you both have grown in a different way
No no no no
I don’t want to meet your friend
And I don’t want to start over again
I just want my life to be the same
Just like it used to be
Some days I hate everything
I hate everything
Everyone and everything

Please don’t tell me everything is wonderful now…
Please don’t tell me everything is wonderful now ..
Please don’t tell me everything is wonderful now ..

I don’t want to hear you tell me everything is wonderful now……

Please don’t tell me everything is wonderful…….

Everything is wonderful now…….
Everything is wonderful now…….

I'll get it out of the way:

REM - Everybody Hurts

Depressing only in that it sucks depressingly huge amounts of ass.

Here's my stock answer:

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
The Smiths - take your pick
The Cure - ditto

Actually, music that's simply intended to be depressing normally doesn't make me feel sad. If I enjoy a song, I usually experience feelings of bliss while listening to it no matter how "sad" it's supposed to be.

reminds me of this brilliant episode of father ted, where he talks this other priest out of killing himself, and theyre dancin to the shaft theme song. the ugy catches a ride on a bus after, and hes happy as hell. then radio head song comes on the radio. ends up killing himself i think

Street Spirit and How to Disappear Completely are both very suicide-worthy songs. So are a lot of their other songs but those are the ones that stick out the most. There's one song on Amnesiac that I can never remember the name of that sounds like an incredibly upsetting dream.

Lacuna Coil - Falling. that one is definitely on top of my list. together with Leaving on a Jetplane, but that's a whole different story.

Falling is depressing in a good way, by the way. the combination of lyrics & melody just.. gets to you. at least, to me. like you instantly feel hopeless, slipping away in yourself, while some kind of desperation is bubbling inside of you, when listening to it.

Have you the song Kimya Dawson worked on with Third Eye Blind?

No, but I did see her perform live at this little artsy place the size of a living room, and someone asked her about opening up for them, and she said that while they were nice to her, they were the most assholish snobs on the planet <3<3<3
