That's male OR female, btw.

Magdalena? Sunny's name? yes, that one is fantastically beautiful too. but in Dutch it'd be real weird to name anyone that way, mainly because of our way of pronouncing the "G". & the rest of that name pretty much too.

Speaking of Dutch names, only yesterday did I finally discover how to pronounce "Nijmegen". Oh, happy day.

Female names:

- Cristina (translates to Christine, Christina, etc)
- Laura

I'm pretty dull when it comes to thinking of names. If I ever have a kid, my wife will be the ones to think up the names and I'll just disagree with them.

I do however like Magdelena and LOVE Isabella for girls; don't realy have any opinions on guy names.*

* I didn't realize this until I actually heard people called them here.

No clew how to translate Javier in English, but in French it would be... Xavier, I presume?
Javier is actually more Mexican/Hispanic. There's not really an English name (that I can think of) that it correlates with, unless Joseph does in some weird way.

Holy god, Maria's list is littered with the names I hate most. I'd probably give half of those people slaps across the face once I found out their names.

Personally, I like simpler names, but I'm open. I tend to like names based on positive interactions I've had with people of that name in my life, rather than just the way names look or sound. So, my faves:

Ladies:

Molly (my FAVORITE name ever, even though everyone else hates it)
Sarah
Marissa
Vanessa
Jennifer
Samantha
Alexis

Men:

Victor
Robert
Hector

...and that's about it.

JohnnyNemesis
05-15-2006, 10:02 AM
I hate Edgar, but I definitely like both the sound and obvious meaning of Victor. It's a good one.

I think I'll try to name my child something that'll fit well with his last name, more than something I'd like. There are actually certain first names I REALLY dislike, but if they work well as a full name, then all is well.

My name "Ricardo" is a perfect example. On it's own, I really hate it, but with my last name, if pronounced properly, I think it sounds great.

Tired_Of_You
05-15-2006, 10:11 AM
Haha. I also hate my last name. Unfortunately Medea would sound horrible with it. If I ever have a kid I'll have it with a guy whose last name would sound great with it. haha.

Vanessa's a good one. I will never name a child Molly, as one of my sister's annoying friends is named that. Same with Emma, Raven, and Savannah. Otherwise I'd like Emma.

Btw, Valerie's a really cool name too, forgot to mention that.

JohnnyNemesis
05-15-2006, 11:18 AM

How is there an "English" way to pronounce Jonathan? Anyway, it's an annoying name to have because Americans seem unable to deal with 3-syllable names and mostly shorten it to "Jon," which I've really grown not to mind. But a lot of people, once they take the liberty of shortening it, will also spell it "John," which is just totally wrong. "John" is like the most common name of all time, and yet still a bunch of feckless morons think it's just a shortened version of "Jonathan." Furthermore, a bunch of horribly confused parents have taken to naming children "Jonathon," "Johnathan," or 'Johnathon," which leads to even more confusion.

Here are some of my favorite names.

For dudes:

Nicholas (Nick)
Brian
Spencer
Asher
Eric
Blake

For ladies:

Heather
Kira
Mallory
Natasha
And for some reason, I really love Indian female names. I think all of the following, for instance, are beautiful for whatever odd reason:
Shreya

Actually, I happen to know a really really hot girl named Aashna. So that's probably why on that one.

Yay! Valerie is an aweome name. It sounds even better with an é. Valérie. ;p

There's indeed a difference with the pronunciation of Jonathan in French/English. It's probably an Englsih thing to shorten it to Jon/John. I've only heard people calling them Joe.

This is for naming your kids, right? Well, in that case, I have two criteria:

- It has to have two syllables
- It has to begin with a "J"

That left a lot more names than I thought when I first thought of it.

Silvia... it's lovely. In French it's Sylvie, equally lovely, but not my "favourite", I just like the sound of it.

Yeah, I love names. If I have a son, I'll call him David (if the dad agrees) coz it's my all-time favourite, along with Alexandre, but my brother is already called Alexandre...
