I dunno if I understand what that means.
Does anyone have suggestions for a definition?

On a related note: This is the "gypsy punk" band Gogol Bordello (www.myspace.com/gogolbordello) that a lot of people seem to be crazy about. Know them? Thoughts/Opinions?

Gypsy punk = punk mixed with traditional European gypsy music.

Yes I understand this much...but I dont hear the gypsy sound in it, ever. It reminds me of ska. And thats not a good thing :[

You don't hear the folksy, violin-y stuff in the mix? It might not show on their myspace songs (I'm at work, haven't clicked it) but it was there on the few I had downloaded before.

Ah, no I really havent. I guess it's not 50/50 in all of their songs.

So you know the band?

I LOVE GOGOL BORDELLO. I actually bumped into the singer at a bar in Austin, TX once. We chatted. He is a seriously cool guy.

But yes, the 'gypsy punk' think comes from the fact that most of the band are Romanian/otherwise Eastern European folk musicians, living in the US. The music comes from that sort of liminal space between the old and new worlds.

Gogol Bordello has got to be the worst fucking band of all time. I thought i'd give this band a chance, given all the 'hype' around them. Then i saw their performance on Jimmy Kimmel, and my ears and eyes began to bleed simultaneously.

the fuck! I had no idea they're that big.

Endy - thanks! But it keeps saying "This track isn't available on Last.fm radio yet"..

Performing on Jimmy Kimmel really doesn't mean anything.

That I did, but they have, unfortunately, expired. I have the majority of their latest release, Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike and I will upload some of my favorite tracks from it in a bit. They're just a fun band.

I love Gogol Bordello, they have some really weird music but it's great. Love the violins and stuff they use.

I changed my mind, they're horrible.

I think the reason it reminded you of ska is because of the off-beat driven sound. I can definitely hear the middle eastern influence very heavily. I like the music, but the vocals blow, and that live performance... that was horrible. The music itself has potential, but it doesn't sound like any of the members have much talent. :-/ I might have to explore this genre of gypsy punk and see if there's anything else like it out there, cause if any bands with talent have touched it, it could be damn good.

I've finished listening to it, but only on the computer at work so it wasn't very loud. It was good from what I've heard though. I also got the new Reel Big Fish and the new Spoon which I didn't even realize was coming out so soon.

Zing! But really, it can't be a trend when only Eugene Hutz has the engineering know-how to wax that 'stache.

Can someone tell my what Gypsy Jazz is? I went and a saw an acoutic guitar ensemble at school that was apparently, Gypsy Jazz, but it just sounded like a boring guitar ensemble to me. As to why I say boring, I like acoustic guitars, but all these guys did was stay in a chair for 4 hours and rotate ensembled with different guys in chairs, play slow songs and not move or talk much. Most of the songs sounded the same. and I fell asleep about 4 times but I had to stay, cause I had to do a critique on them. It sounded like an spanish guitars playing elevator music for a very long and sad RPG.

new Tiger Army cd
I definitely like this album more than I thought I would.

I'm not sure if I'd exactly say they're gypsy punk, but I really like Dances of Resistance by Babylon Circus. Only about half of it shows any sort of European/gypsy influence and the rest is pretty much straight ska/reggae but it's a really fun album.

I cant stand to listen to these guys for long...the voilins and that dude voice gets really annoying after a while.lol I liked underdog world strike far more then their latest album, they mixed a lot more "foreign" lyrics in all their songs this time round.

If it makes you feel any better, "I Would Never Wanna Be Young Again" is the only song that I was like "omg, I hope they play it!" about and they didn't play it. Not even after two encores.

It was awesome. The DJ they had open for them played for two hours which was longer than their set was and you couldn't really hear the violin for the first few songs but other than that everything was great. They really do put on a good show. Sadly, there was no drum-surfing like in the picture I posted.

First off, fuck you. Secondly, fucking fuck you.

Sorry for being so rude, because you're a nice girl. But basically what you just did was take my least favorite genre of music, compared it to my favorite genre of music, and then proceeded to insult my favorite genre of music.

so the show last night was fucking ridiculous. their set lasted like 2 hours and people were dancing all over the place... even by the tshirt vendors and downstairs. it was exhausting (dancing for 3 hours straight is rather tiring) but so so awesome. there were condom balloons, a guy dressed as a white bunny.... and topless eugene jumping onto the balcony and making out with a random chick. and. oh my god. fucking amazing.

i was amazed by how much everyone LOVED it, though. it was like... a total personality cult. to think a year - year and a half ago like... no one knew who they were. aha! taking overrr!

the dj was good too.

in retrospect, though, i should've worn a bra, because my breasteses hurt from all the crazy bouncing. tmi i know.

Nothing like that happened at my show. I feel a little ripped off now.
