I will say it, and many people will disagree with me, but I will say it: they are the greatest band that is making music today.

I don't care what you have to say about that fact, it's true.

So yeah, let's discuss them and how amazing they are. Which song is your favorite? As of now, I'm loving If/When we Rise even though I hated it about 2 or 3 months ago.

Everything Went Numb (http://download.yousendit.com/D35595C1063EC232)
Here's to Life! (http://www.savefile.com/files/71290)

For those of you that haven't heard them yet, they're probably the best thing ska/punk has to offer. Even people that hate ska/punk as a genre still tend to fall for them.

My Favorite song right now is On & On & On, but of course that's originally by Catch. My favorite song EGN is probably A Better Place, A Better Time.

The amount of talent in this band is simply immense.

My favorite song my them is probably, "Point/Counterpoint". I love this band and find them very addictive and extremly fun to listen to. they are one of my favorite Third Wave Ska bands along with favorite bands in general.

Your point?

The Skatellites, Specials, and Slackers are still playing live.

Skatellites are more traditional ska, not ska/punk. Specials are two-tone which despite having punk mixed in isn't normally what people mean when refer to ska/punk (are they really still together? I thought they broke up a long time ago. Wiki says they haven't been active since 98). I've never heard the Slackers.

I was expecting you to mention Leftover Crack.

Your point?

He wrote Keasby Nights entirely. It's not a Catch-22 song, it's a TK song.

The Specials play in the UK every now and then, mostly with reunion tours, and Neville Staples does a solo act too. Leftover Crack is far from being ska. I listened to them a lot in high school but now I just can't take them seriously. The Slackers are amazing and should be listened to. Also Streetlight is probably the best 3rd wave ska band 2nd best only to the Toasters.

What Slackers stuff would you recommend? I actually have Ska Killers by the Toasters and only listened to it once when I first got it like...5-6 years ago? I didn't like it then but I didn't like a lot of things back then. I'll give it another listen soon.

True.... but I was referring to Streetlight compositions. As in, it's a Streetlight thread, and my favorite song is a re-recording of a song he did in Catch 22, making it technically a cover, even though the bands share a frontman and SM's Keasbey is far superior. Just like Here's to Life is a BOTAR song and Catch's Supernothing is a Gimp song.

Close my Eyes is a good album by the Slackers, but really you can't go wrong with any of their albums. If you're going to get into the Toasters try Don't Let The Bastards Grind You Down.

My current favorites are Failing, Flailing and We Are the Few. I also like A Moment of Violence, among others. It's hard to name favorites, unless it's a top 12.

A Moment of Silence is fucking awesome, so is If and When we Rise Again.

EDIT: I agree with the top 12 comment, every song is fucking amazing. Big Sleep would probably be my least favorite of their songs, though. It was just kind of a weak ending for the cd in comparison to the other 11 songs.

0r4ng3
09-14-2006, 08:05 PM
I like both Silence and Violence. There's a very good reason they're next to each other on the album.

Edit: In fact, I'm going to listen to them both right now.

These are my favorites -

Dear Sergio
Giving Up, Giving In
As the Footsteps Die out forever
A Better Place, A Better Time
A Moment of Silence & A Moment of Violence
The Big Sleep

I think it's safe to say that Thomas Kalnoky is one of the best songwriters I've ever known.

Alright, so I couldn't wait for Everything Goes Numb to come in the mail, so I went up to my local music store today and picked it up (hopefully, they allow me to cancel my order). I just popped it in, so let's see how it is. I'll edit my post after a full listen.

Edit: It'll take a few more listens, but this is a very, very, very good album, and will only get better. My favorite song so far is probably "We Are The Few".

Edit2: Add "That'll Be The Day", "AMOS", "AMOV", and "The Big Sleep" to the favorites list, in progress.

Edit3: Add "If And When We Rise" and "Failing, Flailing" to the favorites list, still in progress.

Edit4: "Point/Counterpoint" is amazing and is probably my favorite if I have one. In addition to "Point", add "Here's To Life" to the favorites list. Now the only left to like is "The Saddest Song".

Edit5: "A Better Place, A Better Time" is another great song. I might as well add "The Saddest Song" to complete the favorites list while I'm at it.

Everything Goes Numb is their only original album at the moment. Keasbey Nights is a re-recording of Tom Kalnoky's (who wrote all the songs) old band's (Catch 22) first album. It sounds very similar to Everything Goes Numb so they're both worth checking out.

The only BOTAR song I truly love is Here's to Life, It's better than the SM version.

Agreed 100%.

Botar is yet another Thomas Kalnoky fronted band, they are seen by most to be the best of the three groups, yet I fail to see why.
They are great, but Streetlight in my mind is much much better, other than the fact that Botars version of Here's to Life is so much better than SM's.

Same with me for RYM too. I've got about thirty cd's that aren't on there simply because I don't feel like doing the work of writing down all of the cd's because they aren't listed on the site.

I'm gonna just copy word for word an LJ post I made about Streetlight Manifesto:

Streetlight Manifesto is the first unbelievably overhyped band in ages that actually lived up to their hype once I gave them a good listen.

As some of you know, I pretty much stopped following new music in 2000 or so, instead relying on whatever came my way through friends and such. I still heard lots of new shit, but actually heard OF more music than I actually heard. So, I heard of a bajillion bands with tons of hype.

The White Stripes? Great hits, unforgivably bad albums.
Muse? The reason the term "average" was created.
The Strokes? Make me wish I were dead.
The Arcade Fire? The reason the term "pretentious" was created and the reason people type "HORRIBLE" in all caps so often.

But Streetlight Manifesto is fuckin' awesome, and this isn't even my kind of music! Swell.

Seriously, I'm shocked at just how good this band is. Their songs are so simple, yet incredibly well-written...everything makes sense...I just love it.

I'm gonna see Catch-22 and Less Than Jake in a few weeks, so "Everything Goes Numb" and "Keasby Night pt. 2" are exactly what I needed to get me back into ska (even though I was never really into it too much).

Apathy
09-24-2006, 04:24 PM
Yeah, I know. Everyone loves them.

It makes many people not want to listen because they hate the people who keep hyping them up, and then as soon as they actually take a listen.... Wow!

Yeah, I know. Everyone loves them.
I can't see how a person wouldn't, but there are some exceptions. I had "Everything Went Numb" and "We Are The Few" as my MySpace song, and my best friend heard it and asked me why I have such a sucky band in my MySpace. Then again, he's the kid who listens to Motorhead, Limp Bizkit, and Lil' Young Misspelled Word Rapper.

I'll upload That'll Be the Day, but since I don't have Keasbey pt. 2 on this computer, I'll one up that and upload the entire Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution Call to Arms EP (which has 5 songs including their renditions of Here's to Life and Dear Sergio). Before anyone tries to correct me, I KNOW THAT BOTAR DID HERE'S TO LIFE FIRST.

So, watch this space for links from savefile (which has been acting up recently, so you may have trouble downloading right away, but I'm sure the problems will cease soon enough).

GAH, Savefile won't let me load anything! I've tried 3 times over the past few hours and it still won't work! I'll try to load the rest up tomorrow, guys. Sorriez!

ohmygod. I just downloaded some of the suggested stuff, and I gotta say ska (the taste I've had so far, at least) is probably the most musically cheerful energetic style there is. Of course there's the occasional slower part but you guys should get what I mean.

I don't exactly know if it's relevant, but I had to say it.

Everyone should download the above cd, I like it a little bit less than Streetlight, but that could be because there aren't enough songs on the cd to give me an accurate view of their scope. They're still phenomenal beyond all logic, seriously. My personal favorite of their's is It's a Wonderful Life, but They Provide... is amazing, too.

We Are the Few

If and When We Rise was my least favorite until I started listening really closely to it. The horn part is very intricate and if you listen closely, what they do for the horn part moves beyond clever and moves into "borderline-classical" range. I fucking love that song now, but it used to be the only song on the disc that I couldn't listen to.

You have no fucking idea what you're talking about. Ska contains absolutely no "punk" whatsoever. Ska by definition came out from raggae and calypso roots. The kind of bands you're talking about are 3rd wave bands, and to claim them as Ska-P is like comparing apples and oranges. Streetlight, however, breaks this mold and keeps the same aspects that classify ska as ska (the off and up beat, heavy bass lines, and the upstrokes) as well as keeping a catchy tune. Goldfinger, Bosstones, and etceteric other bland bands can't keep up. This is why they break up and TK still keeps writing music.

Sell Out was their big hit and She Has a Girlfriend Now was their less big hit. I love both but I tried not to mention them.

I agree on LTJ. I listened to them a lot in high school but really don't care about them now. I wouldn't mind seeing them at a show like this but I'd never go just for them anymore. If you still want to check them out before going, listen to All My Best Friends are Metalheads, Automatic, Last one Out of Liberty City, Help Save The Youth Of America From Exploding, and We're All Dudes. Really, just about anything from Hello Rockview or Losing Streak was pretty decent. I like how when I saw them in high school they criticized other bands saying "they've all gone emo but we're still ska cause we still have a fucking horn section!" but their most recent album was essentially power-pop. And, you know, the assumption that having a horn section is what makes you ska.

I've never seen anyone say it was terrible (aside from a couple songs), just that the original was better. I've never heard the original in its entirety but out of the songs I have heard, the only one I have a definite preference one way or the other for is 9mm. I prefer the original version by FAR.

Apathy
06-04-2007, 09:29 PM
I like the new version better. To directly contradict what someone said a page or two back, I think the old Giving Up Giving In sounds like shit whereas the new one is one of my favorites. The intro sounds a lot nicer too.

And plus the drums don't sound so erratic and unorganized.
edit: and oh, the guy made the Walking Away intro more intricate and I like it more and stuff. Yeah.

JohnnyNemesis
06-04-2007, 09:31 PM
It's funny, cause everyone I know in real life says that Keasbey Nights Vol. 2 makes the original look like a complete embarrassment. Like, the overwhelming majority of people I know IRL say they can never touch their Catch-22 CDs again, whereas on here, it seems the opposite. Lawl.

There are strong sides to both, but the first is so much more raw, it fits the music better. Whoever set up the drum microphones in SM's version fucking sucked, really. He made it sound like the Catch-22 drums... but everything else sounded good. It kind of ruined the sound.

Long story short - listen to both, different songs sound better on different versions, but I generally prefer the Catch-22 version. They need to fucking release this new cd before I die.

Professor Chaos

Tom Kalnoky was the singer/songwriter/guitarist for the album. He basically WAS Catch 22 at that point, they sound quite a bit different without him. Just listen to the outro to the Streetlight version of the album. The robot voices explain it as best as it can be explained.

Come on, you can figure this out.

Also, the two aren't exactly the same. On the SM version, there are a few verses that aren't in the Catch 22 version (Dear Sergio, Day In Day Out) and a lot of the horn solos and bass lines are different.

Llamas
06-05-2007, 06:57 PM

Apathy

Unless you already figured this out from nieh/robot voices here goes my timeline without actual times on it. From #1 to #7 about Ten Years pass.

1: Tomas Kalnoky creates band (catch 22) and puts out record (keasby nights)
2: Tomas Kalnoky quits band on not exactly good terms.
3: Catch 22 continues without Tomas. Releases Numerous Albums. They sound completely different.
4: Tomas Starts new band. (Streetlight Manifesto) They sound a lot like Catch 22 used to before Tomas Quit.
5: Tomas decides he wants to redo his old album. (keasby nights) He claims it is because the quality etc is bad, but many people speculate that he did it out of spite, it basically was his album and he wants to claim it as his with his new band.
6: Streetlight Manifesto releases re-done (and in my opinion slightly better) version of Keasbey nights.

OK, right, so to the right of this window you can find more details about the upcoming shows, as in links to the venues and links to buy tickets. As we get more ticket links, we will be putting them up, so check back often. From the ticket counts so far, a good number of these shows are well on their way to selling out so please, please, please buy your tickets in advance. Too often after the shows we meet upset fans that couldn't get into the venue after driving for hours, due to it being sold out. Don't let it happen to you.

Our record release show/party will be in Boston on Nov 13th (the day the record officially comes out) so bring the champagne! Unfortunately the record comes out 4 days after our hometown New Jersey show... Well, we pulled some strings, begged, pleaded and we are super happy to announce we will be allowed to sell the new record at the Jersey show on the 9th (our beloved Starland Ballroom), four days before it's out in stores and on the web! To show our appreciation to our NJ friends we will be giving out a signed (by the whole band) poster with every single cd sold that night.

Next: yes, the first video off of SITB will be making it's debut soon, thanks for asking. We will be showing it here first, within the next few weeks. And of course it's not just us in a room, lip syncing to our own music (you know us better than that, don't you?). We can't wait to get it out there, should be a good time.

If you're interested in pre-ordering the new record, head on over to Interpunk.com. Ten bucks gets you the CD and some SM schwag.

Mmmm, what else... oh yeah. Here (http://theriscgroup.com/streetlight/streetlightmanifesto/samp/05.mp3) and here (http://theriscgroup.com/streetlight/streetlightmanifesto/samp/09.mp3).

Streetlight's first music video just got posted....it's stupid. I hope it's a joke.

I liked it, it was interesting and original. The art was pretty awesome and it went with the song.

It's looks like a gay kids thing...I'm not saying I'm insecure about that, but just it will really lose a lot of attention and appeal it could have gotten. The presentation can kill everything.

I seem to be missing whats so bad about it. It's completely original, not the band signing while some stupid shit happens in the background and not some random ripped off video clips. It's far better then anything The Offspring have ever put out and better then most videos I have seen in a long time.

Love the song. It's the only one I know because I'm waiting to buy the album.

Personally, the art is fugly. At the same time, I love the video. I wish the band were in it in some way though. Love what it looks like, and the whole idea behind it, I just cringe whenever I see the little fake peoples' faces.

I think the art is pretty cool myself. It reminds me of some weird James and the Giant Peach shit. I like the simplicity it has.
As some may have guessed by my name, I love Streetlight, and I'm sad to say I'm waiting till the album comes out before I give it a listen. You guys are really makin it sound good. Fuck im excited.
We will fall together is super cool, the video's pretty sweet too.

Guys, they don't care if you listen early. I plan on buying the cd at the show I go to so that they'll get all of it, rather than FYE taking 30%. I want to know the songs before the show, however, so I downloaded it. I fail to see why you should wait for the cd to come out. Hell, the link I posted comes with a PDF of the album booklet.

Well that seems like a legitimate reason to listen to it before hand. But it's just more fun to be suprised when an album is released.

You're right, I wasn't surprised at all when I listened to it first.

I really really really like being able to sing along at shows. If I waited till they came to grab the CD I wouldn't know the songs and I would be sad :(:(.

It's not like im trying to tell anybody it's wrong to listen to leaked albums, I don't have a problem with it. I'm just saying that I personally don't like to.

I know, and I understand what you mean. I was just explaining why I downloaded it.

Mr. Gepetto

yeah, had i thought of buying it at the show I would've downloaded it too. But I already pre-ordered it so that doesn't make much sense now.

Did I mention I'm seeing them in just under a month, and that an incredibly last majority of you aren't?

I'm seeing them in just under a week, though. Win! I'm so psyched.

The next week and a half is beyond awesome: Against Me! tuesday, Streetlight friday, Electric Six Saturday, The Hold Steady the next tuesday. yesssss.

I'm in very much the same boat. I saw Bad Religion earlier this week, and within the next month I have Muse, Frenzal Rhomb and of course Streetlight Manifesto. Following on from that I've got Rage Against the Machine, Kanye West, The Offspring and Incubus all before March.

I'm kinda tempted to make my signature a schedule of the upcoming, like you see in so many other forums.

The fact that it's not as good as Everything Goes Numb and it's still absolutely fucking mindblowing only speaks to how incredible this band is.
