Do you have iTunes? If you do, go to the CD import preferences and set the encoding to mp3. When you're done with that, select the songs in question, right click, and select "convert to mp3". That should do it.

If the m4a files are protected because they were bought from the iTunes music store, however, you might have to burn it on to an Audio CD and rip it back as mp3.

If the m4a files are protected because they were bought from the iTunes music store, however, you might have to burn it on to an Audio CD and rip it back as mp3.It'd probably be faster to write it as an Audio CD image and then rip it to mp3. Then you wouldn't have to waste a CD either.

I use dBpowerAMP (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/) to convert my audio files, but m4a might require a pluging, I'm not sure about that. It's very easy to use, just right click on the files you want to convert.
