I actually got to see 311 in concert because I recieved some free tickets. I don't really know the band at all, they were decent but it seemed like every single person there was smoking something or another, that was a bit annoying.

They had a little drumline-esque intermission where each member of the band had a snare, and then a full drum solo from the actual drummer. It was enjoyable I guess, if not a little strange.

Also the second singer was annoying as hell.... he played the entire set with one arm behind his back for some reason.

I heard that this is how 311 got thier name:

"K" is the eleventh letter in the alphabet. So, "311", means 3 x K. Which means KKK.

Of all the 311 name myths, that's the one that bothers me most because it's probably the dumbest. Actually, scratch that, it is the dumbest.

Yes, the band with countless songs promoting racial harmony, the band undeniably influenced by several forms of black music (funk, rap and reggae, for example), the band always talking about peace, yeah, their name is a KKK reference. Riiiiiiiiiiight.

On topic: I used to love 311. But I was 12 at the time. The self-titled and "Transistor" albums are the ones I have and loved, but I just can't take these guys seriously anymore. They're just so embarrassing sometimes. Other times, however, they're quite good, but I never listen to them...unless they pop up on shuffle on my music player.

I also heard that the band members think 3:11 is the perfect length for a song.

That sounds more prominent.

Maybe the name is meant to be ironic?

There's no way evoking lynchings and burning crosses can even be accidentally ironic.

311 is the police code for indecent exposure, btw.

No, I meant ironic in the sense that they gave themselves that name because it's the exact opposite of everything they stand for.

But I think the police code thing makes more sense.

I heard 311 got their name because of their apartment/room number or something like that. Or was that 1208? Anyway, it was some band with all numbers as the name.

Also, I'd like to mention I love the song "Flowing".

I love most of the reggae influenced songs I've heard, however the marijuana smoke at the live show during those songs was especially prominent/annoying.

I disliked most of the other songs. Especially when the high-pitched skinny dude was trying to rap.

That was 1208.

That's what I was responding to. Evoking the KKK is going way too far to be ironic.

Wasn't the Three - Eleven (311) a place where punk band played in New York or something? I heard that’s where 311 (the band) got their name.
