So I was looking through my past post and threads I've started. I found an SOAD one I figure instead of resurrecting it I'll just start a new one.

What’s you current favorite System Of A Down song?

For me it is as follows:

1. Soil
2. Attack
3. Suit-Pee
4. Stealing Society
5. Toxicity

But I cannot lie; I love every single song they have ever written. The album that is currently my favorite is their self-titled, thanks PilZ-E, you recommended I get it before any other album, and I wish I had. It just sounds so better, I like it much better then the Mezmerize/Hypnotize sound. However those two albums are amazing as well, I don’t think any other album/song compares with their early works. They set the bar high with their self-titled.

old school hollywood has the WORST lyrics they've ever written, plus it's boring and repetitive. What on earth could you possibly like about it?

Best songs:

suggestions
soil
atwa
highway song
roulette
revenga
lost in hollywood
tentative
soldier side

Floyd the Barber

Sugar
Chic 'n' Stu

Highway Song
Ego Brain
Roulette
Deer Dance
Chop Suey
Toxicity
Aerials

Come out and smash'em up!

LOveLamas seemingly likes the slow songs,

well for me

1.Chop suey
2.Forest
3.KIll rock'n roll
4.Prison SOng
5.War?
6.Stealing Society

But i like 85% of their songs pretty damn much so its hard to say.

None of those are slow. ATWA is awesome because of the contrast between the softer part and the thundering part. Roulette is just genius. Lost in Hollywood and Soldier Side aren't that slow, they're just very complex songs with amazing harmonies.

I think that is something that makes Mezmerize and Hypnotize such great albums, that every song is complex and well developed. Lost In Hollywood is one of them and so is Soldier Side, they contain deeper meaning then someone would get off the surface of just hearing the song. They contain subliminal messages, these songs are very complex, understanding them takes a lot of knowledge of the band its self. I donít think anyone can really understand these songs with out being the band themselves.

Soil is, just amazing; this song is (in my opinion) is the best on their self-titled only beat by Sugar, Suite-Pee, Suggestions and Spiders. (Odd all of them start with an "S.")

Roulette is also a great song.

Well, I guess. Soldier side is lyrically pretty obvious. Lost in Hollywood is deeper, though. Soldier side has great lyrics, though... I like the songs for the music, though, and not the lyrics.

Roulette is also a great song.
I love it because they do so much with so little. It's every bit as powerful as one of their rockers, yet it's really just a guitar and voice. It's by far their best ballad, because they don't have to make use of heavy sound in addition (like spiders and aerials)... and Lonely Day just plain sucks.

Guess it isn't the best if I add the rest, but I love their self-titled, so I don't think any of those songs are bad.

Lonely Day does suck. Lyrically itís a good song, maybe if it had been faster and heavier and Serj took more vocals on it.

...the lyrics are what make it suck. "most loneliest" doesn't even make sense... and he just keeps saying that he feels lonely that day. There's no feeling behind it, and it doesn't seem to have a point. "Such a lonely day and it's mine, the most loneliest day of my life" good lyrics? God, second worst lyrics SOAD has ever done (right after old school hollywood). Musically, I enjoy the song, even though I'm not that big on darian's voice as melody.

What? Old School Hollywood's lyrics are annoying and a little silly, but not inherently bad. "Lonely Day", however, is fucking embarrassing to listen to, those lyrics are so fucking bad. The "most loneliest" part just seals the deal.

...what percentage of the lyrics to that song are the words "old school hollywood"? Probably more than half. "Hey man don't you touch my belt, standing in the sun, I'm about to melt". So bad... :-/

That one line aside, are we talking about how many lyrics they are, or how bad they are?

Llamas

The fact that they couldn't come up with any good lyrics for the song, so they recycled "old school hollywood" over and over. The chorus is horrible, too. "Old school hollywood baseball, Jack Jalardy's ten feet tall. Old school hollywood baseball, me and frankie avalon". The words come up twice in two lines... and "me and frankie avalon" is moronic to say the least. *sigh* there just aren't any good lyrics in the song.

I must be retarded, I like lonely day. I really like the second singer, whoever that is.

I really can't get into SOAD other than loving some of their singles. With most bands I'll enjoy other songs more than the singles for whatever reason. However with SOAD no matter how much I might like the singles, as soon as I buy the CD I regret doing so.

Because of that, I only like a select few songs. But the songs that I like I'm absolutely in love with:
Toxicity
Aerials
Chop Suey
Lonely Day
Hypnotize

oh...and I despise the entire 'Mezmerize' album. I can't even bear to listen to it anymore.

Darian. I think he's got a great voice for back up vocals... but I think Serj is by FAR the better lead vocalist. The song "lonely day" is okay... but the lyrics are what make it awful.

Toxicity
Aerials
Chop Suey
Lonely Day
Hypnotize
Minus Chop Suey!, those are some of my least favorites by them. :-/

Why is that? Bad experience? It sounds very similar to Hypnotize.

1- I was confused actually. I actually meant I liked the second voice on Hypnotize. I still enjoy lonely day though.
And their myspace says his name is Daron. Doesn't really matter, just a heads up.

2 - I figured you'd say something like that. Most avid System fans seem to dislike the singles the most (as most people do with their favorite bands actually.)

3 - I guess you could say that. It's mostly that while I usually love the singles, I really hated the ones off of Mezmerize. B.Y.O.B. is one of my least favorite songs ever and the other one that Im not sure of the name of, also highly annoyed me.
I went on vacation to florida when Mezmerize first came out, and it seemed like the album followed us. We were driving down, and every hour or so we'd be in a different area with a different radio station. I like listening to radio stations in different areas because usually there will be subtle differences (For instance The Violent Femmes are loved in Milwaukee) Well, every single radio station I found played BYOB. Some of them twice, and in a period of only two hours or so.
Then when I returned home, I found many of my friends became addicted to SOAD after the mezmerize release so I heard the songs even more and remember - I didn't like them very much to begin with.
Now I despise that album.

Now, now, it's not the singles I dislike. Hell, Sugar is one of their best songs! Of the singles on "Toxicity", Chop Suey! was great. Toxicity is kinda boring, and Aerials fails as a slower song to me. On "Steal This Album!", I thought Innervision is a GREAT song, and that was the single. From "Mezmerize", BYOB is a great song, though Cigaro felt very generic to the metal genre to me. And I didn't even know that Hypnotize and Lonely Day were singles. I actually never knew what the singles were from that album. I just think Hypnotize is very repetitive musically and lyrically, and we already know why I don't like Lonely Day.

You're the same guy who hates Tool, right? You seriously need to stop listening to the radio. This is the second time you've said you despise something strongly because you heard it too much on the radio.

Apathy
12-16-2006, 07:23 PM
Heh, the funny thing is that I rarely even listen to the radio.

I only listen to it at my dad's house or in the specific case that I'm traveling across the country.
The truth is though, is that even if it wasn't on the radio I wouldn't like it. It's just that since I hear it so often, I am generally reminded of how much I think it sucks.

If it's never on the radio, theres a good chance I wont hear it because I'm certainly not going to seek it out. Because I won't hear it, I won't really be able to say that I hate it.

P.S.
I really love Sugar. I somehow forgot it in my list.
I've never heard Innervison though.

Daron is good on back ups, all the giggles and he wasn't bad on Ddevil. But Sirj is an amazing singer and writer, I mean he can squeal like a little girl and then give a death metal scream in a seconds notice, Iím not sure anyone could compare to him.

Mike Patton > Serj Tankian > Many > Daron Malakian

I'll upload something to show you just how amazing a singer he is.

EDIT: his band, Mr. Bungle, is an obvious influence on System of a Down. SOAD is kind of like the first weird band I got into, then it progressed to odder music.

System doesn't seem that weird to me....Most of their music seems pretty mainstream to me anyway.

Nonetheless, I hate bands that try too hard to act strange/goofy/fuckedup/tough.

And those bands range anywhere from The Aquabats to Slipknot.

Yeah, but the music doesn't represent them very well.

http://www.myspace.com/mrbungle

The song I'm uploading is called Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz; in it, Mike Patton basically scats the whole thing in some otherworldly language. If you want me to, I could upload others, but you might be completely unable to stand this song, so it wouldn't do much good for me to upload others. They're very weird.

EDIT: Apathy, the only difference between Mr. Bungle and those bands is that Mr. Bungle are fantastic at every genre they play. The song that got me into them includes jazz, death metal, general ambience, and surf rock. It's unreal how they shift genres effortlessly.
