View Full Version : How many pillows do you use?

I know it's a stupid question but I don't think I have asked a stupid question before so I guess, I have a right to ask a stupid question.

Anyway, I have pain. On my shoulders, neck and back. I used to sleep with one pillow first but then I had this backache and switch it to two pillows. I've been sleeping with two pillows for one or two months but now I started to have a different backache (I don't know how to describe it). And now I got used to sleeping with two pillows I cannot sleep with one. And I just can't see a doctor because it wouldn't be a smart move to say him "omg, my neck and shoulders hurt a little so, lol, how many pillows do I need?". Plus I really hate doctors.

Long story short, how many pillows do you use while you're sleeping? One or two? Or are there any weirdos who uses three?

Three: left, right, behind head. I turn every which way throughout the night, so it's good to have options at every state of conciousness.

Optional fourth pillow between the knees.

One, well two one to rest my head on and another ontop of my head. But my back is messed up anyways because I sleep on a futon and you can feel the bars of the frame. I need to get a new futon matress.

Optional pillow between the knees.

That every once in a while.

Actually, it depends on your back at this point, but if you sleep on your back, it's best not to use a pillow at all. If you sleep on your side, use one pillow that's thick enough that your spine is straight. The goal is for your spine to be completely straight when you sleep. Since I switch between back and side during the night, I use one pillow that's in between... it's not super thin, but not thick enough when I lay on my side.

It takes getting used to, and your back might be sore for a week or so after switching, but it won't last. I have a really screwed up back, and I used to sleep on two pillows, sleep with no pillows laying on my side, etc. And I had constant back pain like you. Since I switched, my back is a lot better.

I hope that helps!

Uhh, okay. What the fuck?

It varies. I sleep on my stomach, and the position doesn't tend to feel that different no matter how many pillows I use.

That one's fer humpin'.

Seriously though, a pillow between the knees is apparently good for posture or something.

^What he said, Gulsah. The posture thing, not the humping.

Exact same for me. Except the fourth between the knees.

Brianna, I'm just like you. When I go to bed and try to sleep I have to be lying on my side. Otherwise I just can't sleep. And for sleeping on my side I definitely need two pillows. But when I wake up I find myself lying on my back and I guess that causes the backache. It would be nice to have someone to take one of the pillows after I start to sleep.

I use 4. Two soft ones, one's a bit harder, and one's tiny.

Optimal setting for watching TV. The harder one for body support, the tiny one for head support, the soft ones for comfort.

While sleeping I use only a soft one though.

Same here. I used to sleep with just 1, but then I kept waking up with a sore neck.

I was almost gonna forget. Some people say if you sleep on your stomach it means you are in love. I don't know why though. Maybe because of that having butterflies inside of your body feeling.

I have 3 pillows on my bed. Huge one and 2 small thin pillows, one is a little bit thinner.

I find myself not using the huge one because it makes my back hurt. I use him for sleeping on sides occasionally, usually I'm hugging him or supporting my hands when I sleep on stomach.

I can use those 2 little fuckers for every position. For stomach position, one's enough.

I used to have two flatter ones, but when I bought a new one for Denmark I bought one bigger one, that keeps my spine straight when I'm on my side, and my head steady when I am on my back too. According to my phsyiotherapist my neck is hypermobile (oh yeah), and that's why I like my pillow to keep my neck//head in place. Makes sense. The new pillow is awesome though, so I bought the exact same one again to keep in Holland. Whenever I switch pillow my neck & head hurt like a bitch the next day.

I used to always use two, or very rarely just one. Lately I've found that I sleep better elevated so I've been using three sometimes.

I fall asleep with one but I always wake up with it on my head. You should get one of those memory foam ones. They're incredible. Maybe you like, keep your stress in your neck. Try to remind yourself to relax your shoulders as often as you can.

One. Memory foam.
Word. Those are amazing. I've had one for years and now it's hard to sleep with anything else. If I've got only soft pillows, I'll usually fold one over so that it vaguely resembles the shape of the memory foam one and try that. Usually it's just that, but if I happen to have surplus pillows I'll toss one in for between the knees or feet (for some reason I'll often find it harder to fall asleep if my feet are directly touching) or just give myself something to squeeze.

When I fall asleep 1 or 2 under my head, and one between my legs. By the time I wake up there all over the place.

Your spine has to be straight.

My mattress used to be shit and my bed had "holes". I always had backpain. Then I switched my mattress, my pillow, and basically my entire bed...now I sleep quite well.

I have one big pillow, but I could as well just sleep with none.

I need to replace my bed. I made my family just buy me bedding for Christmas to further encourage myself to do so. I'm too old to still be sleeping on futon mattresses.

Two. One big and one small one. But I try not to keep them too elevated or I'd probably be in pain the next day. I'm not sure myself what the best thing is when it comes to pillows and the appropriate height, but some sources advise you do some slow back stretching exercises each morning to lower the stress on your back. What part of your neck/back is achy anyway? There's lots of things to do for it once you locate it.

Two. One semi-tough, big one & one softer, more pathetic, slimmer type pillow.

At dad's I only have one and he has a pathetic overall pillow count so I have to replace the toughness factor with a sweater or something. So poor.

One. I'm much of a one-pillow girl. I throw it away in a rage when sleep eludes me.

One of my ex-bfs told me that the pillow should be flat if you sleep on the back, but more voluminous if you sleep on the side or in a foetal position. And one shouldn't sleep on one's belly. Not even on an empty stomach.
