Lawl, I know this is a weird thread for me to make, but my friend and I need to know how to pick a standard key doorknob. Why do I need to know this? Well, my friend's brother has taken the video camera, which we need, and put it in his room. This brother then went with the rest of the family to a ski trip and has locked his door and we can't get a hold of his parents. It's a standard key doorknob and we would like to get into it without breaking it. So, anyone have any suggestions?

Don't you have a screwdriver? Can you see the screws in the nob? I don't remember... but can't you just stick something very skinny and use it like a key?

No .

Safety pin, hair pin, scissors, screwdriver? I don't know what kinda doorknobs you have where you live. This thread amuses me though because as a kid I managed to free some of my family from being stuck in bathroom and picked three locks in the house successfully. It's a fun challenge. Fourth one I had to call my cousin and we used an axe. :P Good luck.

Yeah, use a hair pin in the key hole, and turn it. It's simple... unless you have a weird lock.

It's a key lock, it's close to the same sort of lock you see as the front door to people's houses. We've already tried a paper clip and "skewer" (don't know what it's called) but none of the attempts worked. It's a knob that has a key hole and a very small hole on the top right between the round part (the knob itself) and the door.

aghh... i don't know. Can't you swipe a card, or something?

Nope, there are base boards around it.

Twist some wire? Unless you already used the paper clip like that.

Can't help you sorry. what about twisting some wires ?

Try putting in a key that fits but only half way and try twisting it, though i doubt it'll work. Go look it up in google.

edit: what the hell? me and sim said the same thing.

Anything down that small hole? Such as a screw that would loosen something up? I haven't played with any door locks in a long time.

No, because it's locked from the key thingy. Taking out the nob wont do anything.

You might as well go ahead and buy a lock-picking kit off the internet. It won't help you get your camera back, but it will help you with revenge.

I was googling for images, to try and see what the inside of one looked like (they don't really use locks like that around here) and came up with this page, might be of some use. http://www.fortliberty.org/locks/secrets-of-lock-picking.shtml

Lars posted a good link.
If it's a legit lock, you need two things:
A tension bar and a pick. A tension bar would be the harder of the two to just construct out of something. It has to be flat in terms of thickness, and about a centimeter wide. This will provide the turning action of a key; it provides torque. With the pick, you need to go all the way to the back of the lock and work your way forward locking the pins in place. It takes a decent amount of practice. I've only picked a lock successfully twice.

and yeah, an actual lock picking kit is very helpful.

You're not gonna manage to pick a lock like that without a crowbar. Give up.

Actually, we already have sort of given up. Meh, I guess we'll try some of the stuff you guys suggested. Thanks for the help!

I have a lock just like that on my door, they're easy to pick, just take your foot, and kick straight into the handle, it will open.
