After discovering a few Dutch artists from JoY, I download a bumper pack of Dutch albums by four different artists. Now I know there is a strong Dutch contingent on these boards, so I was wondering if anyone could give me hand with which albums are the best, as I would rather hear the best albums than listen to a load of rubbish and be dissapointed.

So I have the following albums:

Acda & De Munnik - Acda & De Munnik
Acda & De Munnik - Adem (Greatest Hits I think?)
Acda & De Munnik - Groeten uit Maaiveld
Acda & De Munnik - Hier Zijn
Acda & De Munnik - In de Orangerie
Acda & De Munnik - Liedjes Van Lenny

Bløf - Blauwe Ruis
Bløf - Bløf Speelt Doe Maar
Bløf - Boven
Bløf - Helder
Bløf - Het Eind Van Het Begin Singles En Ballads - 2CD
Bløf - Naakt Onder De Hemel
Bløf - Omarm
Bløf - Oog In Oog
Bløf - Tussen Nacht En Morgen
Bløf - Umoja
Bløf - Watermakers
Bløf - XXL

Dijk - De Blauwe Schuit
Dijk - De Stand Van De Maan
Dijk - Door
Dijk - Later Is Nu
Dijk - Muzikanten Dansen Niet
Dijk - Niemand In De Stad
Dijk - Nooit Genoeg
Dijk - Nooit Meer Tarzan
Dijk - Wakker In Een Vreemde Wereld
Dijk - Zeven Levens
Dijk - Zevende Hemel
Dijk - Zullen We Dansen - 1981-2006 - 2CD

Marco Borsato - Als Geen Ander
Marco Borsato - De Bestemming
Marco Borsato - De Waarheid
Marco Borsato - Giorno Per Giorno
Marco Borsato - Luid En Duidelijk
Marco Borsato - Marco
Marco Borsato - Onderweg - 2CD
Marco Borsato - Zien

I realise that there are quite a few albums there, so this is why I need some recommendations from the list above. I really really like Acda & de Munnik and already have Naar Huis. Also if possible could you recommend some more artists. I'm also open to recommendations for other foreign (to me) langauge groups/songs, as I really appreciate the music and I never get the chance to hear it in the UK. Any help is extremely appreciated, thanks.

We wanna listen to them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: If you want recommendations for foreign bands, then here's one. The band that sings the "Numa Numa" song is called O-Zone. And the real name for the "Numa Numa" song is called Dragotea Postea or something of the sort.

Basically anything by De Heideroosjes is good if you love punkrock.
The best dutch artist is Ayreon: get The Dream Sequencer. (The songs are all English though). From the list you posted I would choose Bl°f; their last 3 albums have been very good (I believe Boven, Blauwe Ruis and Umoja)

Acda en de Munnik makes my blood boil. What bullcrap music. But if you want to listen it .. just do it.

I honestly thought for one moment that you might have had something constructive to say, oh well we can always hope.

I'm more looking for stuff in foreign languages, Dutch or others (if you have suggestions). I'll have a look for De Heideroosjes, and will listen to the Bl°f suggestions.

Maybe I should have made it clearer, I'm into punk/rock, but nothing really heavy and I also like so acoustic songs (like Acda & de Munnik).

I love Acda en de Munnik too, they're really good. I kind of dislike Bløf though.

As for me, I'm a big fan of Rowwen Hèze, you should definitely give them a try. They sing in a Dutch dialect (Limburgs) but they're well known in the Netherlands. I'm not sure if a lot of their songs can be found online, but I recommend.

- Bestel mar
- D'n duvel is los
- Rowwen Hèze
- Limburg
- De neus umhoeg [youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0qMf3E2hfo)]

If you can't find any I'd be happy to send you an album.

Cheers for the suggestion, I could only find an album called Rodus & Lucius (out in 2006), can't find any of the others though.

Buddyholly: I'll check out some of those artists, any of them slightly acoustic or punk-rock? Or any particular album recommendations?

I've heard a few songs of it though, but I don't like them as much as their earlier albums. My favorite album would be 'Boem'. If you want I can upload it for you, no trouble for me.

Ok, Bedankt! I've listened to half of the album so far and it's good actually. Has quite a happy/upbeat feel to it!

Bazza, seeing the things you liked (ain't Acda & de Munnik awesome?? <3), I'd say you'd also love Guus Meeuwis. wild guess. Van Dik Hout wasn't such a success, I see?

edit: oh right, I have Blauwe Ruis from Blof & personally I love it. Umoja is from their world-tour, if I'm not mistaking, & that was absolutely quality shizzle they put on that cd.

Van Dik Hout, I forgot you sent me that! Just listen to it and yeah I like, did you recommend an album? I can't remember. And yeah Acda & de Munnik are brilliant, I sometimes think of lyrics that could fit/what I think they're saying. Obviously I haven't a clue what they're singing, but it's fun to do!

all the albums of Acda & de Munnik are pretty fucking great.

here; Het Regent Zonnestralen (it rains sunbeams)
On a terras somewhere in France in the sun
sits a man, who until yesterday never won
but his car crashed nearby
without him, without Herman
because he had just sold it

Herman in the sun on a terras
reads in the AD (Algemeen Dagblad, newspaper in the Netherlands) that he wasn't alive anymore
his car was completely burned out
& the man who had bought it
stood under his name in the newspaper

o, o, o, breathe easily/quietly for a moment/little while
o, o, o, seems as if it's raining like always
but it's raining, & it's raining sunbeams

a week ago, in a park in Amsterdam
he oversaw his life & became limp with fear
he was a man whose life was already defined
& of all his boyish dreams
only becoming old was realised

o, o, o, breathe easily for a moment
o, o, o, seems as if it's raining like always
but it's raining, & it's raining sunbeams

on a bench in the park he came to his decision
call it brave, call it running/fleeing, but I'm flying the coop
a week ago from now, & here he was sitting once again
with more freedom than he wished for & now he was confused

Herman reads the newspaper about a hundred times
it's really there, page eighteen, framed in black
did he in the past keep all his opinions
& all his dreams quiet
now he was nothing not no one nowhere anymore
so he can go where ever he wants

Herman pays the bill & then stands up
finally he has the wind in his head again
I got a second chance
& that's more than I deserve
but if this is it, this is it
if this is it, this is it
if this is it, this is it
& we shall see

o, o, o, breathe easily for a moment
o, o, o, seems as if it's raining like always
but it's raining, & it's raining sunbeams
o, o, o, breathe easily for a moment
o, o, o, seems as if it's raining like always
but it's raining, & it's raining sunbeams
& it's raining sunbeams

is that all you can think of? I admit it's lame, but if that's what you immediately associate him with, you miss out on.. quite a lot. here we may not be uberfucking fond of him, but objectively he's one of the best singers we have. I assume you've heard his songs Brabant, Zo Ver Weg, Geef Mij Je Angst, Als de Liefde..?? at least, if you say "his music" gets KINDA ok after a 12 pack, I assume you know exactly what "his music" is.

His music if fun to listen to when your drunk with your mates. But its not high quality work. and yes i have heard those songs.;)

JoY

oh, I love Brabant. I never liked Guus Meeuwis, until I went to one of his concerts. I've been to quite a few concerts in my life, but this one was one of the few that was flawless. he sings live like he sings on his cd's. it's really quite impressive. even the best artists I love with my whole heart can be pretty fucking disappointing in real life.

& yes, it's great music to listen to when you're drunk with your mates. true. or in the background, when you're not really doing anything in particular, but are still busy.

Boudewijn De Groot, Skik and Tröckner Kecks are pretty much acoustic (Boudewijn De Groot kinda is the Dutch Bob Dylan).

De Hardheid, Doe Maar and Luie Hond (are ska/reggae-ish bands)

Normaal, Joving En De Voederbietels en De Raggende Mannen are kinda rock 'n roll bands.

Osdorp Posse is a Dutch hiphop band.

You gave me one recommendation for a crappy pop song that's been heard repeatedly in the UK, so it was a none serious suggestion. For starters you didn't even get the name of the song correctly. If you have any suggestions in the punk/acoustic genre then feel free to post them.

I think I'll give the hip-hop a miss! I'm intrigued by the ska/reggae bands, any particular album I should look for, or is all of their stuff good?

JoY: I actually listened to Het Regent Zonnestralen with your translation infront of me and it's amazing how well the english works with the song (someone should re-record it!). Also what surprised me was how many words sound very similar to the english, but with a slight twist.

And on the whole background music topic, I think Acda & de Munnik are great for that, it works well for me because I don't know the lyrics, so I don't get distracted by singing along. Musically I think they are great, lyrically I cannot comment.

I'll translate another one from Acda & de Munnik for you, just because sometimes it's good to know when listening to a band what they're saying.

Niet of Nooit geweest (not, or never have been)

I see two people on the beach
nearby the water, hand in hand
the sun goes down, they're silent of happiness
I just met her (literally; just know her), because that's you
she laughs at him, he looks like me
but that can't be, because I break everything

how could I ever be that boy/guy? (literally; I could never be that guy/boy)
that peace, that love, it's not for me (literally; nothing for me)
but why does it then seem so familliar (literally; trusted, but it also has the meaning of "familliar" in Dutch)
I love you dearly, as you see
but somehow something is wrong
I wear a ring, but I never married you

I'm not myself, or all these years have never been
I'm the party animal (literally; atmosphere maker) at the wrong party
I'm not myself, or never have been

I see two people, they're standing up
she turns around, we have to go
(I) look in her eyes & see the same pain
two people before already bonded (meaning; married)
all that love/those crushes, what a sin
we're it both (meaning; in love), but don't want to be

I'm not myself, or all these years have never been
I'm the shoemaker with the wrong last (Dutch expression for doing something you're not good at/specialised in, or better in this context; doing something that you aren't supposed to do, because you should focuss on your own "job")
I'm not myself, or never have been

oh, let it be the sun (let it be the sun)
oh, let it be the beach (oh, let it be the beach)
let it be the sea
let me do something now
that causes you to never wanting to see me again
oh, let it be the salt (let it be the salt)
let it be my dumbest [of all] fault (mistake, but it's supposed to rhyme with salt)
but let me never [again] forget this, never [again] forget this
let me never [again] forget this, moreover

I'm not myself, or all these years have never been
....et cetera.

can you tell what it's about? the guy on the beach is the singer & he's walking hand in hand with a girl, a woman, he's intensely happy with, but he's married & not to her. he's married to somebody else, so he's cheating with her. he's amazed she smiles at him, because he breaks everything. he broke his marriage, or at least is wrecking it & it surprises him she could love him despite that fact. he then sees a couple with the same pain in their eyes; they're both married, but not to each other. then he wishes for something, anything that could cause their, or well, his affair to end.

about "I'm not myself, or never have been all these years" (I changed the order of the words, so it'd be closer to what it says in Dutch); he either is now himself, being with the woman he truly loves, or he used to be himself, when he was still faithful to the woman he married.

it's very subtle, so I thought I'd explain it more.

It's weird seeing Acda en de Munnik songs written English, it takes all the charm away. When it's in Dutch it feels so more personal, which is kind of obvious.

Joy, do you have a lot of Acda en de Munnik albums? I only have two 'Naar huis' en 'Groeten uit maaiveld', I've also got the DVD for the last one. Which one would you recommend next?

And wcm, thanks for mentioning Vengaboys. I'm still on a mission to find their videos in good quality.

JoY

Tijs, I think my boyfriend & I pretty much downloaded.. them all. many of the earlier albums have songs from 'Naar huis' on them, but that's basically logical, because they're originally commedians & not really singers. I'd say you have two great ones on your hands. Trilogie's kinda got them all. you should just check them out, see which songs are on which cd, because like I said; many songs, almost every song is on at least one cd.

& you're absolutely right about the translating. couldn't help myself, though.

I agree on that first statement.
Within Temptation I liked aswel. the Vengaboys were the coolest joke ever made. *laughs*
