Looks are just very subconscious. Of course it plays a high role though.

The phenomenon in Europe is very aptly called the 'Americanization' of politics. Although in America it was just the natural consequence of creating political parties that had to pander to such a large and ultimately different groups and areas of people.

In Europe I guess it's just a product of America being the dominant cultural influence.

Looks mean next to nothing in politics:

Who do you think looks better?

Jan-peter Balkenende

Wouter bos

My point is: Jan-peter is known for his doll looks and wouter bos is known for looking more youthfull and funloving. But Jan peter won the elections the last four times. So looks mean next to nothing.

You vote for the man/woman with the standpoints that appeal the most to you.

Why do you spend all that time grooming yourself? Why do i spend all that time grooming myself? Why does allmost everybody spend all that time grooming themselfs? Because we want to look good for ourselfs and other people, We don't want to go around looking like a bum. And neether do politicians.;)

Whiplash, babe, you're forgetting a minor fact;

politics in the Netherlands have been rather complicated, especially this year, since the public seems very disorientated & confused. when elections don't at ALL go the way they should in my view, the public is confused. but indeed, the outcome has led to complicated, hopeless situations & no one is sure how long this cabinet is going to last. I hate to say I told you so, (this to the voters) but.. I told you so..

the christians/conservatives/right wing had the overhand the last few years & there were quite a few matters open for debate & discussion. Rita Verdonk caused a whole lot of controversy, especially now our country is becoming more & more multicultural, Jan Peter Balkenende was seen as a weak leader & those both come from more conservative & right wing parties.

the problem is; the last few years, overal seeing, have gone pretty well. there were just a few things that, like I said, were very open for debate & that needed to be discussed & that's what happened. there was a LOT of critique, but during elections all the opponents can do is criticizing the current way of politics. do you follow me? opponents aren't the leading parties, thus don't have a substantial share in decision-taking. their voice doesn't really matter, until the period before the elections take place. seeing the leading parties were right wing & the opponent was mostly left wing, all right wing politics would get a shitload of critique dumped on them this year & that's exactly what happened. a natural reaction was for everyone to vote for more progressive & left wing parties & everything happened exactly as expected.

PvdA shouldn't in these days even compete with CDA. the things Wouter Bos said? they were completely undecided about everything, when D'66 undeservingly gets labeled with this reputation. god knows they'd be willing to change every single one of their plans to win this thing. it was to be expected more left wing parties would come out stronger, but PvdA is barely left wing, if you critically look at it. they jab about nature, polution & poor coloured people trapped in the system of the Netherlands a little, but if it came down to it, they'd have no trouble accepting & adopting more right orientated plans & ideas, if it'd work in their advance & for their popularity.

look at Balkenende; he's reliable. he sticks to his points & he may not be a smooth talker, but it's a comforting thought that at least his appearance & chit-chat can impossibly have brought him so far. that leaves something substantial, that no one can take away. he may not be the best, but in the forest of wild mad men with smooth suits & promises, a shirt without a tie or jacket to appeal to the people - the advertisements on legs - he's a diamond in the rough.

Minor fact you said?;)
But i see where your coming from, However my knowledge of our politics isn't as great as yours ;).

Bella didn't your cabinet crash like twice already? Lol at holland being a 3rd world country.

Does any other country have this annoying new tendency, where the prime minister's wife starts becoming more active in Charity?

Because the Danish Prime Minister's wife is doing that, and it's so stupidly American. America has no royal family so they make that stupid charity stuff the duty of the woman. (LOL). But Denmark does have a royal family. So we don't need one from the prime minister's wife. And I don't think it will get many more votes..since Danes don't care...

I spent some time just checking them out & listening to the insane amount of bullshit they sprayed out of their mouths.

but relatively.. I'm surprised the Dutch, known for being down to earth, realistic, humble & critical, so collectively voted for Wouter Bos anyway. you know, with everything I said.. he's a commercialbreak on legs, while Balkenende is being so.. reliable. boring, not too strong as a leader & not always right either, but at least very, very reliable & with the best intentions.

this being said, maybe looks do play a part. they most definitely do, but I firmly believe there's a huge difference between the part of the population that votes for the smoothest looking/talking politician & the part that votes for the most reliable (i.e. boring) looking/talking politician. so both opposites can work out for someone in politics.

Per, it's freakin' drama. all of them, in the cabinet; fucking drama-queens on the loose. I've never seen politics so commercialised & I'm absolutely certain this has led people to vote outright stupidly, because they were convinced by a single advertisement/commercial. we label our politicians with reputations for god's sake. not any reputation that matters, no, the hardcore highschool-shit: nerd, popular.. people are voting for the politician that seems to represent the social group the voters (would like to) belong to. it's disturbing. achievements, results, accomplishments & plans don't even seem to matter most anymore.

if this will go on, the cabinet will crash time & time again. why are people so goddamn retarded? holy shit, this cabinet won't last a fucking month. think, before you vote & consider if you'd want that party to be a leading party, or at least a growing party, or if you'd just want them in the opposition, criticizing the leading parties, because that's what they do best. we now have a coalition of 1; conservative/right wing with 2; progressive/left wing. nothing in the middle. the progressive/left wing party changes opinions every week, so isn't at all reliable, & even though they do, these politicians won't fucking ever come to an agreement. that's because one of the conservative/right wing parties in the coalition is so incredibly fucking antiDutch hardcore Christian, they want to bring the discussion about abortion, euthanasia & gay marriage back to life. what is this? the year 500?? Rome?! & the best part; there's an EXTREMELY progressive/left wing party in the opposition now, that's grown waaay out of proportion & that has the size of a leading party these days.

people = stupid. I hate people.
