View Full Version : Am I the only one?

Who thinks the best parts of Valentines day are the after-Valentines day sales in all the stores? Seriously. I just bought a whole butt-load of those candy hearts for a dollar and a bag that must have weighed about 3/4 of a pound of Wonka Nerds for only a dollar. I've been scarfing these things down like nothing, and i have A LOT more. So, is there anyone that takes full advantage of these ridiculous candy sales?

i hate fucking valentine's and everything related to it. So, i also hate those sales. Besides, one of the reasons i don't like that day is because the only things you see in stores are useless, ugly, pathetic, boring gifts.... so, I'm not interested in buy them for a buck.

actually no. I don't "celebrate" that day. And no.. as i said in another thread: i have plenty of love around me. Lots of friends who care for me, and a lovely boyfriend who adores me.

I just can't stand that day.

As long as it's good chocolate, why wouldn't you? I don't like candy but chocolate is always good. Do Wonkas really exist? I so didn't know.

I used to go out the day after Valentine's Day and get candy every year. This year I really had no drive to do it whatsoever, so I just said screw it. Plus, usually it's just those candy heart things, and I really don't like them.

Chocolates as valentine's day gifts aren't so common here. But you can buy tons of red and pink pillows shaped like a heart with an "I love you" writing on them. Ew.

Willy Wonka is an actual candy company. Sadly, they don't actually use Oompa Loompas to make everything.

Easter is probably the best one, since there's at least a decent amount of variety in the kinds of candy. Plus, Cadbury egg's are teh sects.

Good point. There's lots of chocolates around Easter. Then it's customary here that you get a box of chocolates on your name day, lots of sweets on St. Nicolaus day in December. And lots of chocolates on the Christmas tree as well. Beats Valentine's easily.

nieh

They don't taste anything like PEZ. I don't know of any other candy that tastes quite like them. I think they might be vaguely similar to these (http://candy-crate.stores.yahoo.net/neccanwaf.html) but it's been so long since I've eaten those wafer things that I can't remember what they actually taste like.

No way. These ones look like those things that are used for decorating birthday cakes. Pez is sooo much different. At least for its fans.

Jakebert

Pez is huge here. It's one of those candies that's so popular that they don't have to advertise is anymore. They even based an episode of Seinfeld on Pez.

in your case.. it seems a principle problem, missy. you hate it out of principle. not because valentine's actually IS that much of a horrible, horrible day, but just because.

because it's commercialised - "Hallmark holiday" (then you wouldn't celebrate a holiday in your fucking life), because it's a pun for everybody out there who's single - "Singles Awareness Day" (when the day is designed for lovers to confess their love to each other, especially the ones who are single) & because it doesn't seem to have much of a historical basis, when St. Valentine's day officially exists on Februari the 14th since 496. it was only removed in 1969 from the church calender, because they had to narrow down the amount of holidays & this one had a legendary character. although America made it into a huge deal & designed an entire market around the day, America didn't even know what Valentine's day was, until the British imported it in the nineteenth century.

are you worried it is made into something else than it originally used to be? well then, you think Santa Claus has anything to do with Christmas, when Saint Nicholas was a man who died December 6th, which then officially became a day in his celebration. later that became the evening of December the 5th, but some still celebrate it the morning of 6 December. all Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus, & Christmas have in common, is basically the month December. he gave secret gifts, so you're not actually supposed to hand over a fucking gift on Christmas (you're not supposed to exchange gifts on Christmas at all, but beside that fact..), people aren't supposed to know who it's from. Secret Santa is a rhetorical tautology, or a pleonasm if you will.

Christmas.. has to do with baby Jesus being born. if anything, anything in this whole wide world has been twisted & commercialised.. it's Christmas. so all the trash that's been dumped on Valentine's day, honestly, it gets so much critique. over fucking nothing. just by a bunch of nagging bitter singles & people who feel sorry for them. oh right, & it's commercialised. oh noes. like we don't live in a world of capitalism with economy as its religion. I would worry about what the persuit of profit does to whole other areas, than the market of card sales. like medicine - treatment & medication, for instance.

ooo, I like those. they're sweet! only one of them will do, though. over three make me nauseous. :(

they look a bit different than the kind I know, though. the kind I know have the letters imprinted, not written on the sweets in red. & they look more powdery. these look like they're glazed, or something

right now i feel like your total opposite, Bella :p

There are many things i just can't stand about valentine's. But i'm too lazy to write them all.

And about the candy hearts.... i've never liked them in my whole life.

JoY
02-28-2007, 08:03 AM
let me guess, Anya; it a) is commercialised, b) has a legendary character, instead of the holiday being based on a concrete historical basis, c) is a pun for singles & d) sets a date on which you supposedly exclusively express your love for your lover, preferably in the form of materialistic gifts.

let me know if I missed anything. reason d would be the reason I don't really celebrate Valentine's, except for a card with a personal message. maybe something corny aswell, but that's jokingly & taking the piss out of Valentine's. at the same time it's also just a lot of fun, buying a red pillow shaped like a heart. wrong, but fun.

so well, after my post.. I would only understand reason d, although I don't really see the harm in celebrating love. it doesn't mean you need to express you love/friendship only on that day, although it seems to give out that message, but if there's something you would want to let a person know, or if you want to do something special for him/her.. you could do that on just any day, but if you aren't normally the mushy kind of person (like me), it gives a perfect opportunity to open up towards the person you love & be as cheesy as you want. it just offers an opportunity to spoil each other more than you normally do & to crawl out of your daily shell of routine & express your feelings.

(ugh, that sounded terribly ..girly)

i'm going for options "a" and "b"... a bit......aaand.... that's all from your options. Some of the reasons I don't like valentine's might be silly, but that's just my opinion. I get sick with hearts, colors pink, white and red everywhere, I don't like the typical gifts people buy, I don't understand why people get so excited about that day. Also, I just prefer to receive a gift/card/whatever on anyday, than on valentine's, cause people give stuff because everybody, everywhere is reminding you that you have to on that day, cause if you don't, your loved ones might feel sad.

I have nothing to say to people who enjoy or celebrate that day, I'm not a party pooper. If you want to celebrate that day... go on... it's your life. But, when someone asks for my opinion, I express my dislike for it.

JoY
03-01-2007, 04:45 AM
sure, I might not understand your reasons for disliking it, but I'm fine with whatever you think about it. =) & hey, I don't like the pressure either. my boyfriend & I always agree not to celebrate it, but I'm always like; "what if HE bought something, then I'm there empty handed", so I always get him something tiny & small anyway just for the hell of it. (& because it's kinda fun to be silliez)

Anya82

something like that happens to me with Mother's day. I mean, I don't accept that you have to wait until that day to tell your mama you love her, or to take her out for dinner, or give her flowers, or whatever you like to do...... BUT I do some stuff like that on that day, NOT because I "celebrate" that day, but maybe my mom thinks it is important, so.. I have to go with the flow on that specific day.:p :o
