In the book some race built a supercomputer capable of calculating everything in the universe and telling the answer to the Great Question, the answer to the universe, life, & everything.

After many hundreds of thousands of years of calculations, the computer declared the answer was "42".

They eventually realize that they didn't know the question to begin with, thus the Earth was created (it was really a supercomputer). Due to some misunderstanding*, the Earth was destroyed 5 minutes before the readout came.

*It may have been an extremely underground job actually, as some believe that if the Ultiimate Question and Ultimate Answer were ever discovered at the same time, the Universe would cease to exist, start over, and become more odd than the last time.**

**Some say this has already happened.

I absolutely love that book. Plus, check the avatar.

The asteriks denote that there's more to be said on the issue.

That's exactly what I did. I'd have to say they're the best, overall.

I've read all Discworld books up to Thud now, not counting the ones for children.
