This reminds me...does anyone have any knowledge of the level of risk involved in downloading music from Limewire nowadays? I've kinda stopped doing that lately because I'm afriad of getting sued. How common is it?

Very rare i think, i don't know anyone that has got sued or anyone who knows anyone who got sued & alot of people use it. I'd imagine the risk only comes when you download very large quantaties of music rather than the occasional song or two. I havn't checked out official statistics or anything though so don't take my word for too much.

That reminds me of another question I had. Do they even go after people that use Soulseek? From what I've heard, it's mostly Limewire and torrents.

The RIAA has sued people who don't own a computer and even dead people. I don't think it matters how much you download.

On a related note, I need to delete my JB collection before FBI comes to my house.

That's screwed up, they're probably only doing that to publicise the fact that they sue alot of people, but unfortunately they do get the point across. They can't sue kids can they *bites fist anxiously*

No, not exactly, but they can sue the shit out of your parents.

I think they mainly to go after people using the most popular software such as Limewire and torrent clients.
They tend to go after those sharing and uploading loads of stuff to people lall the time, than those who just download and stop sharing, I believe. And hope.

is this a sign that I should delete the torrent program-thing my boyfriend uploaded on my computer?

Grabbal
04-04-2007, 04:28 AM
If you don't use it you should just cause of the space it takes up.
But if you use it like I do you shouldn't cause it's so good.

JoY

he uses it, but if my ass gets sued because he does, well no thank you. I'll just go out to rent a video.

If they're sueing folks in Netherlands, then tell him you're deleting it from your comp. If they're not sueing folks over there, you should be fine, though.

I haven't heard about it in a while. there have been incidents, though, that they suddenly started to check people for films & programs.

would it be enough just to delete the films he downloaded, or can they charge you for having a fucking program in itself alone? man, I don't know how this works. I never really break laws, or whatever, so yeah, having a boyfriend who very rarely & occasionally downloads something on my computer makes me Ivil??:(

Hrm, I'd like to know too. Maybe it's just that you have to delete the downloaded files?

MrJoe

There's nothing wrong with having Limewire or Torrent programs installed on your computer, there's plenty of legal stuff to download via torrents as well.

Basically as long as the program is only occasionally open downloading stuff and closed after its finished downloading or when not in use, then you should be ok. As far as I know they tend to go after people who download gigabytes and gigabytes of illegal material, leaving their computers downloading/uploading that shit 24/7.

Ohshit! (most of it's legal though)

If most of its likely you should be alright anyway. It can be a little risker if you have a Static IP address. I mean they could still track you if you have a dynamic IP address, but its far easier for them too if you have a Static IP.

If i'm not sure if what i want is illegal or not, i download it in a Virtual PC and watch/play it on there, once it's done, i just close the VPC without saving. If they really wanted to find it, they could, but it's much harder to recover an unsaved virtual hard drive than a physical one.

My PC is always on and my VPC (or two) is only on when i need it to be.

hint: it's not the downloading that's illegal, it's the sharing. when you download on these networks (particularly torrent) you're force to upload too -- it's the uploading that gets you busted. it doesn't matter if they can find it on your computer or not, they have records of your ip address sharing this material.

I don't think anyone has ever uploaded anything from me.
then again, I shut the shit off as soon as we don't need it anymore & take the things we downloaded out of the folder from which people upload.

I do the same, except I leave "safe" files in there cause I can't be bothered to move them / have iTunes look for them again after the move.
