Since it's too hard to predict musical chemistry, this thread basically amounts to naming your favorite musician on each instrument.

Ok, with this retarded combination, I have no idea what genre they'd be labeled under.

Joke?

I always have trouble with these things. A lot of the bands I like don't necessarily have incredibly talented members, they just work well as a group due to the chemistry and song-writing. I always try to make a band that I think would work well together and I always end up wanting to put a whole pre-existing band into the line-up. I'll put a few possibilities on every line:

Drums: Jon Theodore (original Mars Volta drummer); Joe Easley (Dismemberment Plan)
Bass: Les Claypool; Michael Ivins (Flaming Lips. Not the best bassist ever but something about his playing sounds really cool to me). I'm having trouble thinking of a good "pound you in the ass" bass player for some reason.
Guitars: Buckethead; Warren Fitzgerald 10 years ago; Trey Spruance
Vocals: Mike Patton; Travis Morrison

Similar to nieh, I just have two different bands that I think would be good.

Band 1 - Bomb-the-Jazz-Solo-Artists Manifesto

Vocals - Jeff Rosenstock (BTMI!) and Tomas Kalnoky (Streetlight Manifesto)
Bass - That Guy From Fishbone
Guitar - Tomas Kalnoky
Drums - ProTools
Keyboard - Jeff Rosenstock
Trombone - Jamie Egan (Streetlight)
Trumpet - Miles Davis (he'd hate his life)
Saxophones - John Coltrane (he would too), Charlie Parker (I'm sadistic), and whoever plays the contrabass saxophone in Hazmat Modine

Band 2 - Fucking what the Fucking Fuck

Vocals - Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle), The Wu-Tang Clan
Bass - Les Claypool (Primus)
Guitar - Omar Rodriguez (The Mars Volta)
Drums - The Guy From The Fall Of Troy

My lineup has a few odd choices.

Vocalist: Rob Thomas (Matchbox Twenty/Solo) or John Mellencamp or Kevin Griffin (Better than Ezra)
Guitarist: Vai or Satriani or this third guy I can't remember.
Bassist: doesn't matter; not even really needed
Drummer: Portnoy

Best lineup ever ? Knock James LaBrie off Dream Theater, put Hetfield instead, bingo.

Scratch what I said. My new band idea: throw Beck, Jeff Rosenstock, and Sufjan Stevens in a room full of instruments, recording equipment, and computers and tell them to record a full cd in 2 months or they'll die.

What they come up with would be abstractly depressing, with an upbeat orchestral rap-rock feel.

Have you ever heard "Self"? They're another one of those 'bands' where one person does everything. They're pretty much just power-pop with some hip-hop and funk thrown in. Nothing all that special, but their album "Gizmodgery" is kind of neat because every note on it was done with children's toys (kid's guitar/drums, toy xylophones, toy cell phones, etc.).

It's more about style than talent. The stuff he came up with for himself to play back then is a lot more fun for me to listen to.

The classic Black Sabbath lineup, with Osbourne, Iommi, Butler and Ward, is probably (in my opinion...) the best lineup any band has ever had. The lineup on the second Iron Maiden album is pretty fucking sweet as well, but there's just something about the old Sabbath albums that's just... perfect.

Now, I realise that that's not what this thread is about at all, but I do not care.

Not everyone is really the best, but seeing a combination of these different styles would be very interesting.

The recording band that Ozzy had for his first two albums (before he kicked the bassist and drummer for replacement guys, and then the guitarist died a year after) should have done way fucking more together that band was absolutely phenominal.

Vocals: Ozzy
Guitar: Randy Rhoads
Bass: Bob Daisley
Drums: Lee Kerslake.

As far as these fantasy band line ups go, I usually don't bother, because you can just name the people you think are great at their instrument, but they're great for different reasons at a different genre of music. If I was to try I could come up with a few I guess.

If any Offspring member were to start a supergroup band, I'd say this line-up:

Vocals, Guitar - Dexter Holland (The Offspring)
Guitar - Mark Arnold (Big Drill Car and All Systems Go!)
Bass - Karl Alvarez (ALL and Descendents)
Drums - Travis Barker (blink-182, Aquabats, Box Car Racer, Transplants, +44 and Expensive Taste)

Not necessarily the best, but I think this would totally work.

Vocals - Dave McWane (Big D and the Kids Table), or Davey Havok (AFI/Blaqk Audio), or Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta/At the Drive-In)
Guitar - Ian D'sa (Billy Talent)
Bass - Tim Ward (formerly of The Fall of Troy)
Drums - Matt Tong (Bloc Party)

I'm thinking about a few other different vocalists.

And another, slightly more punk-oriented lineup:

Vocals - Tim McIlrath (Rise Against)
Guitar - Jade Puget (AFI)
Bass - Brian J. Robinsion (A Wilhelm Scream)
Drums - Josh Freese
