I'm kind of on the line here. I've heard their first two albums (just bought their first, my borther has the second), both of which were insanely popular in the early 90s. Their first was OK, and the second one was good. I was thinking about collecting their whole discography eventually. I'm sure a lot of people see them as kind of generic. What do you think?

Ilovellamas knows a lot about them, and sent me some of their stuff.
I've quite gotten to enjoy them, this may sound like I'm taking away from them, but it's good music to just have in the backround, they don't really require thinking about to enjoy them.

They also did a wicked good cover of one of my favourite songs of all time, Ozzy Osbournes Crazy Train, which can be found here:

Awesome! I love CS. I don't think they're really generic... they were a terrific grunge band in the early/mid 90s, and just became a really good rock band. They are purely rock for the most part, but they definitely sound like their own band; nobody else sounds like them. Plus Ed's got a fantastic voice.

I uploaded for coneman their greatest hits CD plus a few songs from each album that I like. Here's the link to the files if you're interested http://www.savefile.com/projects/808497291

I have a notepad file, too that I could send if you want to know what albums each song is from.

I've seen them live a few times, and they put on a great show. And their live DVD with the Atlanta youth symphony orchestra is hands down my favorite band DVD. <3

Heavy is one of the best songs everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

But yeah, generic indeed.

Heavy rules.

But you are wrong about generic. :( I do not love you, Ricky. No love.

I have those same two albums, I got 'em at goodwill for $3 each. The second one is great.

...they are pretty generic though. But it's still some easy listenin' fun.
Listening to them right now.

Yeah, Heavy is an awesome song. It spent 14 Weeks as #1 on the chart for a reason. I already have a list of their 6 studio albums (along with a lot of other bands), but if people generally agreed that their music got bad, I wouldn't have probably gotten them. Thanks. Right now I'm trying to get all of The White Stripes, then Audioslave.

And I've been downloading their singles to check out their later stuff. Better Now on their latest album is awesome. <3 @ the Sax solo.

Did you check the links I posted? Their greatest hits album is there, plus various other good songs. If you want, it's nice cause it's all in one file.

Better Now is a very good song, and the sax solo is quite great. I'm always a sucker for some well placed sax. ;) I personally think that the most recent album, Youth, is one of their best. My favorites are Youth, Disciplined Breakdown and Dosage (in no order). Then come the first two (which you have. I like the self titled more than Hints, also), and then Blender. I'd recommend checking out Blender last, and only doing it if you really like all their other stuff. Blender was their attempt at being a boy band, I swear to god. Have you heard the song "Why Pt. 2"? That was the single from the album. If you like it, you may like the album... but I saw them live on the tour for Blender, and that was the only song they played off the album. Therefore, they clearly knew it wasn't a very good album. I like it, but I'm quite a fan of the band.

I put Heavy on a jukebox at a bar last night and all these strangers came up to me and were like "yeahhhh dude, good song!" and I was like "lol whoa".

Heavy is a good song. I actually couldn't remember what song it was at all until I just youtubed it. Holy hell though, some of their other songs that came up on youtube are worthless:
Run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQHs8TDFmYk)
Needs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APqTnV0C8SY)

I'm DLing it right now, llamas. And holy fucking shit. If any of you haven't wikipedia'd the Blender cover, I suggest you do so right this instant. It's the most hilarious fucking thing I've ever seen in my life.

I like both of those songs... but that album that all three songs are from is very ballady. I think their ballads are well done, and really give Ed a chance to show what a great voice he has. If you like their heavier songs like "Heavy", check out:

Yeah... Blender has really horrible album art. Horrible attempt at boyband looks. I mean, where did their hair go? And shaving? wtf. It's very lol.

"Hansel. He's so hot right now, Hansel." That's what I thought when I saw the album art of Blender.

Holy shit, I remember this song and video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6AN7OAqsvmE)! Blast from the past! Nostalgiagasm!

You can still be good and be generic though, llamalover. But with all this reminiscing about Collective Soul and listening to them again and all that stuff...I'm seriously about ready to say that they may be the most generic band of all time holy FUCK IT IS UNBELIEVABLE. Seriously, listen to that song! My GOD, could it possibly get more boring? I mean, they sound good, I can tap my feet to 'em and enjoy them, but oh god they're so generic.

I really just honestly don't see what's generic about them. I can't think of a single band that sounds like them. The closest I'd say is that their first album sounds similar to Soundgarden and Nirvana and the like... but it came out at the same time as those, so it wasn't like the copied ideas.

First song I heard from them was "How do you love"...thats a pretty good song. I found it weird that the VT killer was obsessed with the song "Shine" by Collective Soul and would play it over and over.

Collective Soul released their first album in 1993, which is when Nirvana released their last studio album. Pearl Jam had two albums out by then, and was working on a third. So, yeah, it's quite possible they were rip offs.

But after the whole Grunge phase went away, they survived and carved their own sound.

My mistake. I suppose they did ride off the success of the grunge trend. At least they sounded good, though... most of the popular grunge acts didn't sound good to me, haha.

Yeah, they didn't do such a bad job. i think they're one of the better bands out there (thanks for those songs, btw), but the main thing is proving you're viable without a trend to go with. Look at bands like Seven Mary Three and Bush. Once people lost interest in the music they were copying, they just died.

Yeah, I'll definitely get all 6 albums, plus their next release. Of course, the White Stripes' new release has priority, but that's a given.

I downloaded every song ever made by the Offspring (back when I didnt have money and back before I bored myself to death with them), so I'm going to collect them last.

I just picked up the new album (wtf is this "exclusively at Target and on iTunes" shit?)... it's really good. There's nothing particularly new here that wasn't present on "Youth", but Joel sings a song, and it's quite good. They've definitely come a long way since the days of "Shine". I think this might be their last album, though... and they titled it "Afterword"... I'd be sad if it was their last, but it's a good album to go out on. I doubt anyone else here is into them enough to have gotten this album... but I definitely recommend checking it out.
