So my Winamp has started to have this really cool problem where it just randomly crashes every few songs. Since I don't feel like troubleshooting it, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a similar media player to replace it with. I hate bulky shit.

I've had that problem recently, too. Unfortunately, can't help you much.

I swear they have it programmed to start going batty once a new version comes out so that you end up being forced to re-install it and get the new version in the process. I don't really know any alternatives to it unfortunately.

I haven't had that problem yet, and I recently upgraded. Since you're not into checking the winamp site for updates (they're generally pretty quick to catch bugs), I can't really recommend another music player. My brother uses .... fuck, something JukeBox.

I've tried so many players... winamp, wmp, itunes, creative media source, toshiba media center... etc, etc. I've given each a fair chance, and the only one that doesn't drive me nuts is winamp. It's the smallest program I've found, and it has the least problems. I have no advice because nothing is better. :P

But yeah, check for the updates. I have mine so that whenever there's an update, a window pops up and annoys me until I upgrade.

I've never used winamp.

Creative was simplest to use. Itunes was easier for play lists and playing entire libraries of songs.

What you need though is realplayer. REALPLAYER

Llamas

I liked creative, but it was just too big/messy.

Real Player?? That's the worst one I've ever tried! I think I managed to block it from my memory until you brought it up! haha

Oh, and itunes isn't easier with playing an entire library than winamp. But creative always got slow when I tried to load my entire library (but most players seem to, since my library is 80GB).

wheelchairman

Yeah real player was a joke.

Itunes is actually pretty good, since the idea is you put it all in itunes. Like most media players. Except as you mentioned that makes many of them slow. I only have about 5 GB and creative would just die when I tried that. There is always that Sony Jukebox thing, but that sucks.

Windows media player is very simple too. Never had a problem with it, I just never liked it's library system.

Winamp can pretty much handle any amount.

Yeah I know. :P Or at least I was sure hoping so!

Sony Jukebox is awful, yeah. When I'd try to load my library with creative, it would either crash, or take like 10 minutes before I could do anything again.

The thing I hate the most about iTunes is how it sorts your music.

It's just too damn big. Plus I hate that you have to use the library.

Truth.

I like Itunes the best. However, it is true, the sorter is annoying - There was an old version that had a real nice sorting arrangement. But that was a while ago.

I fully expect the folks at Real to come out with a "Hahaha, we were just kidding for the past decade-plus with that RealPlayer shit! It was a prank that got out of hand!" press release one day.

I used to use a player called Sonique. I liked it, but when I stopped using it it was in the Beta form of it's next version, so it had some problems. I just use VLC player for most everything now. It never has that ridiculous "Codec Error" or whatever that Media Player tends to get whenever I wanna watch hentai.

I mean Ocean's Eleven.

-10 respect points to everyone who recommended itunes :[
I have my winamp set to automatically inform me of updates, and there are currently none. Who knows, the problem might randomly go away after I reboot or something.

And big lol at ricky's post.

Blah I hate iTunes. It's everything I hate about a media player minus spyware. I like winamp because it's nice and compact and neat and doesn't have zany shit. Well, it can, but it's easily disabled. I know one of my friends found something else but it may have only been for linux.

I've used Winamp before, but then I switched to Windows Media Player. I personally think it's better than Winamp, though the newest version sucks, only because it's annoying when you want to add something to your library (though, it does it automatically sometimes). If you're worried about it being too big, then just right-click on the Taskbar, go to toolbars, then select Windows Media Player. It'll just appear on the Taskbar on the far right. Anyways, that's what I use.

I use Winamp with an Emp_2 skin. I got an upgrade a couple days ago and I am in the process of downloading another right now.

I know one of my friends found something else but it may have only been for linux.

lawls lawls linux has the best programs. media players range from the very sleek xmms2, bmp, and a few other really light ones to the elegant + featureful + web2.0ish like amarok, banshee, and exaile.

when the experimental branches from novell's hack week get merged into truck, banshee's gunna be hardcore. local subnet web head for streaming? new list-view widget? other features? oh yes.

I'm no noob, but what the fuck did you just say?

Endymion
07-02-2007, 10:53 AM
banshee's being split into a core and a head, so that the music organizing part is separate from the interface etc. someone's writing a new interface part which is really just a simple webserver thing that registers itself with avahi and the like as a local service, so anyone on the subnet where this is running can browse to it and stream music from a nice web interface (semi-working mockup here: http://joeshaw.org/banshee-web/ ). also the main author has written his own ui widgets which pull info from the music database real-time so it's all O(1) to open the library. it also using query-caching so doing real-time filtering (artist name is a or b or c and genre is not d, or genre is x and year is > y sort of thing) is very fast (current builds handle libraries of about a million tracks without noticeable slowdown on the average modernish computer). there's other stuff they've been working on, but i don't remember it.

Big? you can minimalize it. I don't have to use library.

Llamas
07-03-2007, 02:03 PM
Winamp uses 4,000 KB of memory. WMP uses 35,000 KB. That's 8 times bigger.

As far as physical size, minimizing isn't so great. You can minimize either, but when you have the actual program open, winamp is tiny on the screen, while wmp is huge.

And I'd spent forever trying to open up my system folders to find songs to play, but I always have to revert to going into my WMP library to pick out songs.

But really, the 8x memory usage is the biggest reason I dislike it.

HeadAroundU
07-03-2007, 02:37 PM
I just checked it. It uses 6,000 KB to 15,000 KB. WMP 10. How big is your RAM?

I meant, make it smaller. Just like the internet explorer...

Llamas
07-03-2007, 02:54 PM
I have WMP 11, I believe. I opened it, and once it loaded, it was using 35,000KB. I don't know how big my ram is, but I know that I tend to run many programs at once, and my system slows down if I'm running WMP.

And yeah you can put it down in the taskbar, but that's not what I mean. I can do that with winamp, too. The problem is the program itself when it is open.

Oh, and upon opening it to check that, I also realized how much I hate trying to navigate it. I like the "File", "Options", etc buttons. Not random things in random places, some down at the bottom, some up at the top, some on the left, some on the right. It tries to be too fancy instead of being straight forward.

HeadAroundU

If you have windows xp and you are curious, Control panel/Performance and Maintenance/System it say how much RAM do you have...

Look what I did :D

That's still more than double of winamp (as winamp runs on 4,000KB), plus I still like the button layout on winamp way better.

Plus, I hate how nothing in WMP tells you what the button does. Where is the file menu? Where is the options/preferences menu? etc, etc, etc.

I'll stick to winamp. :)

When I'll show on pause, it says pause...

Right click anywhere --> options, open...etc

I'm fine with that and I'm happy that I've found that cool skin while talking to you. :)

I just searched the thread, and it seems as if no one's mentioned Foobar yet. Basically, it's exactly what you're looking for.

http://www.foobar2000.org/

Tiny, insanely customizable (if you have the time) and I think developed by an ex-Winamp dude.

But you have to remember to look for plugins (here, for example (http://pelit.koillismaa.fi/plugins/)). Foobar without plugins is boring as fuck.

Screenshot may be up in a while.

Click homemade thumbnail if you want to see what "mine" looks like. Go here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=30988) if you want to see what others' look like.

Also,
Where is the file menu? Where is the options/preferences menu? etc, etc, etc.

Right click -> display uh.. toolbar? Maybe something like that. Menyrad in Swedish.

I'm actually thinking of switching back to Winamp. Foobar is a lot more practical, but Winamp has them skinzzzz... Too bad I got rid of all of mine a couple of months ago.

But yes, foobar2000 is a good thing.

Winamp is crashing again! Yay :[

I installed foobar and have it running pretty basic-like. I tried installing a couple panels but they won't load, saying my columnsUI might not be up to date. But that's BS. I had the newest alpha and switched back to the beta and still nothing.

Mannen som blev en gris
07-10-2007, 10:10 AM
That's silly. I've never had any problem like that. Which panels did you try?

sKratch
07-11-2007, 08:57 AM
Do you know if panels have some other dependency that I haven't installed? I tried adding trackinfo and playlistfind I think.

Mannen som blev en gris
07-11-2007, 12:54 PM
Might be a problem with the panels. Did you try trackinfo or trackinfo_mod (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Components_0.9/Track_Info_Panel_Mod_%28foo_uie_trackinfo_mod%29)? Because I'm pretty sure the original trackinfo plugin is old and outdated. Never heard of playlist find either so yeah...

But anyway, you could try this simple plugin (http://chron.visiondesigns.de/foobar2000/foo_uie_queuemanager_0.2.3.zip) and see if it works. You could also go to File -> preferences -> components, choose Copy, paste it here and we'll see.

I'm using Columns UI 0.1.3 beta 1v7 btw and stuff works.

edit: to answer your question though: no, the Columns UI plugin should be all you need.
