What's the big deal with buying movies once they come out to dvd (ect)? Lately I have been a bit of an addict to collecting dvds.....but is it just a waste of money? I'm not really sure, what do you think?

Also post your collection of movies you own (I will post mine shortly).

I hear ya, Markus. I often watch a movie, have a powerful experience and become moved by it, and then pick it up on DVD...only to never bother watching it because I'm not much of a movie person. Meh.

I'm kinda the movie type. But I have very few DVD's. Those that I do have are the films that I've loved all my life, and do regularly watch some of them, regularly enough to have justified buying it I suppose.

Most movies I could stand to only see once, even if I liked it, so I rarely buy DVD's unless it's a movie that I really fell in love with. I've also gotten into the habit of just downloading and deleting movies after I watch them.

The only recent releases I have bought are Rocky Balboa and Casino Royale. They're too damned expensive, £13 for a film that everyone will have to lend, screw that. I do often buy cheapo pre-owned DVDs though.

Aw, you have Adventures of Tintin <3.

I started buying DVDs this year and I only buy romantic comedies. I don't really enjoy watching good movies more than once.
TV shows are a different case, though. I got Keen Eddie's box set a couple of days ago and I'm planning to watch it everyday.

I'm just mad that my copy of Office Space disappeared. That is perhaps the movie with the most repeat watching value I own. And my roommate claims it wasn't him. But who else could it be???

I mostly only buy DVDs if they're on sale at 2 for $15ish or something. I figure it costs $5 to rent one, or $10 to go see one, so it's not completely unreasonable to buy it.

I personally like to buy movies, because it costs about the same to go see one, anyway, and this way I can rewatch them. I don't like to rent because I'm really bad about returning and end up getting fees, and I hate online rental because I decide to watch a movie one night, and by the time it gets to me, I'm not in the mood to watch it anymore. So buying is the best way to go for me.

Most of my movies are in Minneapolis... I just have a few here. Some of them I haven't watched yet and probably suck, haha. I've got:

Fletch
Wedding Crashers (got it in Austria, though, and it doesn't work in my computer, even though I have a region free player)
Equilibrium
Idiocracy (thank youuuu endy!)
Nacho Libre*
the Tenacious D movie*
Just Married
In Good Company
Orange County

Ones with stars I haven't seen yet.

Mota Boy
08-19-2007, 10:17 PM
I own many movies, but only a handful that I've actually watched more than once or twice. Those would be:

Bad Boys
The Rundown
Brick
District B-13
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

DVD collections are the modern equivalent of libraries - you check them out to attempt to divine the personality of a casual acquaintance and to find common ground. I really have no clue why I have such a powerful desire to own something I know I'm not gonna watch, though. It's almost as if movies store as some sort of repository for the emotions that I feel while watching them - in their ability to affect me in certain ways and bring about certain emotional states, I feel almost like they're a part of myself, outsourced.

My DVD collection is almost entirely TV show box sets, because I'm not a movie person at all. The only movies I own are Office Space, This Is Spinal Tap, Clerks, and A Hard Day's Night.

So far, the only complete collections I own are Arrested Development, Titus, House, Seinfeld, and Futurama. I'm missing the newest Simpsons one at the moment, because I don't know if I want to spend 40 bucks on a season I don't really like, especially when I'm saving money for college.

I also need to finish my NewsRadio collection, but I can never find them anywhere.

It's kind of like when I bought the Married...With Children set. I used to watch it when I was younger, and I kind of didn't realize it wouldn't age well. Plus, each set was only like 15 bucks, and for a 4 disc set, that's pretty good.

It's not actually that bad. The black-and-white stuff with just Titus talking is still pretty funny, it's just the rest of it that's bad.

I have a serious DVD purchasing problem, which everybody in New York probably saw. The core of the dilemma is that I buy Indian films, and the DVDs are often of really low quality, making them cheap, making them way too easy to buy. Buying is even easier when you're not sure if you could get to see a movie unless you buy it. And I'm more forgiving when it comes to Indian cinema; a movie may not be classic but if it has nice songs, I know I'll like to rewatch it.

So discs just keep piling up. I haven't updated my dvd online listing in a looong while but basically, I've got around 15 Western movies, around 15 Asian movies, and around 70 Indian movies. Then around 20 TV shows.
