Sweet motherfucking Christ, what happened to the thread? I leave for a few measly months...

Anyway, enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UvhKlsQnz8

What's your fretboard made of? Maple?

How does that stack up against a rosewood fretboard? I've wondered for a while, and almost got a guitar with a finished maple fretboard on my last investment.

Nice solo, by the way - I'm not much a fan of the music but it's obvious that you can play, and very well. I'm still envious of your ease with pinch harmonics.

09-14-2007, 08:34 AM
Still there but getting kinda huge in size, I guess: http://offspring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14477

So I'll rename this Videos of you playing your instrument 2. Why? Because thread-merging is super-tedious and I honestly don't think it's a serious issue as it's not band promotion duplicate threads. Yarr.

I used to dislike Fenders too. I always wanted a metal guitar with jagged edges and all that, and when I finally got a couple, I truly could appreciate how nice a Fender can sound.

I think the neck is indeed maple. Though I can't be sure. It's a Hell of a lot nicer to play on, the only drawback being how thick it is (though that's more specific to my guitar than maple necks in general, of course).

09-15-2007, 06:50 PM
That's a maple neck. It's also a fabulous guitar. For my next buy I'll be getting one just like it, switching the pickups to my preference (though keeping them white...just for looks sake) and throwing on a black pick guard. Because an all black body with a maple neck, silver hardware, and white pickups on a strat is absolutely fucking gorgeous.

Back to the point at hand. Very well played Dave, pinch harmonics become much trickier past around the 11th fret, good job pulling that off indeed. I also think your vibrato has improved, it wasn't bad before, but I think you nailed the vibrato better than Kirk does on that solo.

Thanks man, that's a killer compliment!

I need to give my new guitar a better set-up, so until then, a midnight ballsed-up solo. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJG8MHg91RI)

this is just me improving over a composition i did in Reason 3.0

Nice Whammy squeels, and playing in general there Sheepy, very good stuff!

For something in a totally different vein, I discovered an awesome acoustic guitar arrangement of one of my favourite piano pieces, Happy Christmas Mr.Lawrence, by Ryuchi Sakamoto, so I learned it, and here are the results.

Recording quality is very quiet, but it's a very satisfying peice to play with all those harmonics and tapping on an acoustic, it's in open D tuning for anyone thats interested.

02-03-2010, 09:54 PM
So, here's a video of me playing 2 instruments. BIG NOTE - I wasn't aiming for accuracy here, I just wanted to try this effect out, so my playing is pretty shitty.

EDIT: Forgot link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwxdPEWM3vU

And for good measure, me playing the slap solo from Stone Cold Bush (RHCP) on bass

02-04-2010, 02:19 AM
@mrconeman - although acoustic guitars are definitely not my favorite, I have to say you did a great job... I think the arrangement (like you said, harmonics and tapping) were really interesting
@Ryder1234 - Hammerhead needs some more work :) (you made some mistakes, but the quality was sick... I especially liked the bass sound). That bass solo was awesome, though.

I never really 'show my skills' when uploading covers on YouTube, because playing powerchords all the time is so fun. :) Well anyways, I have a lot of YouTube videos... that's probably the hardest song I uploaded, although it's still easy as hell :):
Then... I really like those two. I think they turned out pretty awesome (high quality, double guitar)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDN_xAX_CjA - The Kids Aren't Alright
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG4eR4s6jCo - Linoleum
These are also pretty nice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UITdpAQT5mk - Hammerhead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5PrUFKF1Hs - Maxwell Murder
The funny part is, my worst covers get 5k views and 5* ratings, but when I upload a video I really like, I get 200 views and 4* ratings... o_O wtf?
I forgot that I recorded some solos for my friend and they weren't that easy. Maybe not that hard, but not easy either... here they are (I only did the solos):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT-c15C3hqQ - skip to 2:40
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQeuFUBhEGM - skip to 2:30

02-04-2010, 08:01 AM
Haha, I know it wasn't good. I can play it perfect though if I try, but I was just trying out the effect more than anything :) I thought the little improvisation on bass at the end was good though.

But thanks about the solo, I did try there :p

02-06-2010, 06:04 AM
lol yeah the little bass solo at the end was pretty cool :)

02-22-2010, 09:29 AM
Yay! I come back and remember this thread. Sweeeet!

P.S. - Here's my contribution. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JVT4YL5Yaw) I need to improve! :(

So, here's a video of me playing 2 instruments.

I'm gonna quote myself to get some recognition, and reply here to let you all know that I recorded another one! "Colossal" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFCsr6re2DE) is the latest addition.

Oh, and everyone should do some more videos! I used to love this thread! Let's keep it alive! :(

03-18-2010, 05:38 PM
This is a video I made like a year ago of me playing the solo from Sum 41's The Hell Song (it was my first Myspace video and I was mostly testing the video quality and some technical stuff). Not great, but hey, whatever~ I'll be putting up some newer (and more original) stuff once I finish this new EP I'm working on.

03-18-2010, 09:08 PM
Pretty good, timing is off but hey ya did it without music in the back round, just shows how clean you can actually play it without the sound of the solo in the back round to help yer performance. small mess ups but overall good dude.

03-19-2010, 02:15 AM

me playing drums.

Here's me playing the slap bass part from Blackeyed Blonde by RHCP. It's alright but I could have done better. Also the sound is kinda weird but you can hear everything fine

I haven't really played guitar in a number of years. But I'm going to see the Big Four live in theatre (!) soon, so I thought I'd learn some Megadeth. Here's the result:

EDIT: Uploaded a better video with a backing track.

07-03-2010, 12:01 PM
A Tout Le Monde is about the only Megedeth song I can listen to, and that was a pretty nice rendition especially for not having played.

I recorded the solo for Rainbow in the Dark by Dio, sort of as a tribute, and sort of because a friend kept asking me to.

07-03-2010, 12:18 PM
Thanks Coneman. That solo was pretty sweet. Your playing amazes me more each time I see it. Makes me wish I still had time to pick up a guitar.

Here's me playing on some trash cans...I'm in the middle.

07-13-2010, 09:26 AM
I'm trying to get back into playing guitar. It's been a few years since playing properly so I'm starting off nice and simple again. I know I can't really sing (and I know I mess up the guitar a few times(hence the funny faces every now and then)), but any other pointers would be cool:)

07-13-2010, 09:50 AM
Nice I like it, it's a nice and chilled out cover.

07-13-2010, 11:20 AM
You play very well Alison! I liked your cover ;)

07-26-2010, 10:47 PM
Me and my friend who plays drums were jamming and we did a few Offspring covers - Come Out And Play, and The Kids Aren't Alright. The guitar is drowned out by the drums a little, and the vocals aren't that loud either, but you can still hear everything. I also had to wing the solo for TKAA, it's pretty bad haha. Preeeetty good eh!

EDIT: Technically this isn't a video of me playing my instrument... the guitar isn't mine :P

08-02-2010, 03:43 PM
Here's another video of me playing my new drums:

08-04-2010, 03:28 PM
Sweet sound, SaS, I'd jam with you.

I covered another of my favourite acoustic instrumental songs, Is There Anybody Out There by Pink Floyd. I also didn't realise I was wearing a David Gilmour shirt until it was uploaded, funny.

edit: Alison, your Greenday cover wasn't bad at all, I don't know what you're worrying about :). The only thing I would say is, practicing being a little more dynamic with your chords, instead of staying locked in the same strum pattern, and hitting the chords with the same force every time, try switching it up a little, or picking the odd arpeggio out of the chord. Now don't take that as a critisism at all, because that song is originally electric guitar and power chords, but it's just a cool device to spice up open chord songs a little more. Bob Dylan is the man to learn from to try this style.

He often will strum the bass note of the chord in one motion, then pick out the rest of the chord after that, it really makes the songs more dynamic while having a very basic chord structure. Other than that just keep practicing, and I'm glad to help you along with anything else. Actually a perfect example of this style is this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9rYXZnoMn0. Just listen to how he makes very basic chords sound extra melodic by changing the strumming and picking patterns. You'll pick it up :)

I miss this thread. Need to check out this subforum more often.

Here's my cover of Buckethead's Big Sur Moon.

Sorry about the volume. Recorded via shitty laptop wecam and the guitar is recorded directly from my podxt.

Heres me with my band playing live at this competition, we got in, playing again this Thursday.

08-31-2010, 06:14 AM
Excellent cover of Big Sur Moon, tone was pretty much spot on.

08-31-2010, 07:29 PM
SåS, that was pretty good. Loved that drum interulude thing you did.

Mrconeman, thanks. I just wish I had better control over the dynamics. I got lazy and didn't really bother to put much effort into it.

A hairy view there indeed, Dave. I felt like I was playing the song, because that's what I'm used to seeing when I play, hair and very slight glimpses of a fret board. Sweet tone!

I recorded my first serious singing cover earlier, it's a Starsailor song, I'm not a particular fan of the band, but the use of this song Way To Fall, in Metal Gear Solid 3 is amazing, so I covered it.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3rTmmtLJbw) isn't anything special, just some demo footage I shot of myself playing some random stuff at this local music store a few blocks from my mom's house in San Francisco.

I just messed around for awhile, but when I got home, I realized how much I've been missing my guitars :( I wish I could've brought one....

Nice work indeed. I could never get the tapping patterns right on that solo. And the harmonics are a bitch to pull off. But very well done, especially without a tremolo arm.

Video didn't work supa ^.

If anyone's ever heard Zakk Wylde's "Farewell ballad" guitar solo...well it's pretty great, so I thought I'd do a cover, and try and get as close to his tone as I could without a set of EMG pickups.

The Talking Pie
04-28-2011, 03:50 PM
I love the pinch harmonic at 0:55. Your playing continues to amaze me.

EMGs pickups are awesome and I can't seem to make a guitar without them sound good anymore. Although that says more about my playing than the guitars.

Trying a couple of old Metallica solos that I used to be able to play perfectly... not so much any more:

04-28-2011, 07:22 PM
Thanks, dude :). Yeah that pinch did sound kind of awesome didn't it. If only I'd actually meant to do it! :(. Haha, that happens to me when I play Zakk Wylde stuff all the time, he has such a physical style in terms of actually hitting the notes with the pick, that when I play his stuff, I don't even realise but I start to emulate it, hitting much harder, and the pinch harmonics just accidentally flow out of me. My vibrato really goes nuts when I play his stuff too, definitely a real rough hands on kind of player, differs from when I'm playing something by like Randy Rhoads with a much more delicate and precise touch. It'll be great to incoorperate some of that rougher style into my own playing, I hope.

You're another one of these players that I see all the time that is way too hard on themselves. I feel like I've said this to you before, but you genuinely have awesome chops, a lick or two in those videos may have been a little rough around the edges, but by no means are those solos something you couldn't smooth out to perfection with a little time. Now those pinches in the Struggle Within were deliberate, I'd probably need a set of EMG's to do that too! Keep on keeping on dude, you can wail.

04-29-2011, 10:22 PM
I don't have much to say, but damn, that's some sick soloing from both of you. Also coneman, I didn't notice that you said that you wrote that tune from that other video yourself. I'm even more impressed.

Trying a couple of old Metallica solos that I used to be able to play perfectly... not so much any more:

I'm gonna try to record myself playing Megadeth's Dread and the Fugitive Mind by the end of next week. I haven't fully learned it yet, but I just want to say it out loud in "public" so I don't get all lazy.

I've got the day off work today and decided to learn this song I recently stumbled across. I had to figure it out by ear, so the solo's not perfect... I'm missing small bits.

05-20-2011, 07:38 AM
Supa: I don't know shit about drums, but that was pretty cool

TTP: Heartbeats is a great tune, isn't it? I learned it myself not so long ago, it was kind of difficult to wrap my mind around the style for a little while, but it's great when it comes.

Is that a new guitar in the latest video? Nice.

The Talking Pie
05-20-2011, 07:41 AM
I've wanted to learn Heartbeats for ages. My brother asked me to teach him it a while back so he could win a bet with a guitarist he knew. It never actually happened, but if it had I would've appreciated just how hard the picking pattern is. I know that I don't do it properly, still.

I got the guitar a few months ago. It's a Shine guitar, who are the OEM for Epiphone, so it's a nice cheap, good-quality guitar. It has passive EMGs.

The Talking Pie

My new guitar, and a wholly-legitimate use of pinch harmonics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1djPvRbHMg)

07-19-2011, 01:53 PM
Duuude. Legit!
Lovely new guitar too, new gear purchases are like Christmas, except at least 100 times better. I just bought a Blackstar 100 watt amp head too, as soon as I get a speaker cab for it, expect a video of that, can't wait to actually get playing the thing, it's a beast!

Bon Jovi rocks on occasion.

Anyway, I love playing that song, especially on acoustic actually, but the solo is a shit load of fun to bust out too, the pinches in it are great, you did a great job hitting them all too. I couldn't help but notice you're playing it in a different key than the original? Different backing track or something?
My only constructive crit would be to just really, REALLY go to town on the vibrato when you hit those pinches, it's what realllyy makes them squeel, instead of just being a really high note, it's kind of a matter of taste on that one though, but Sambora would be one for going crazy on the vibrato on his pinches.

Great work!

The Talking Pie
07-19-2011, 02:03 PM
Thanks dude. I'm going through a period right now of buying cheap (but pretty) guitars. This one is one of the cheapest, but also most beautiful and ironically easiest-to-play and best-sounding that I have ever bought. It gives my ESP KH-2 a serious run for its money.

The key is the same as the original, but I have the guitar tuned down half a step, so I'm playing it all one fret up, maybe that's why it looks different? (I'm getting really bad for that... I have hiccups playing some songs if given a guitar in standard E tuning, now).

I shall have to give it a go with more vibrato. I've just been watching videos of Sambora playing that solo and they're so god-damn amazing.

I look forward to seeing a video of your new equipment in action!

08-14-2011, 08:35 AM
Still awaiting the arrival of all of the new gear before I do another electric guitar video...in the mean time...

...I can't really sing, this was just a lot of fun on a hungover morning. For fans of the Big Lebowski.

Nice! That's one of those ones that would be great in the middle of a "spotlight solo" kind of thing at a gig, you know? Soloing away like a mad man and then Red Dwarf! I know a bunch of tv themes for that kind of thing haha. Cool :)

I got a delay pedal today, an MXR Carbon Copy delay pedal. The thing is fucking awesome. So naturally I learned Big Sur Moon by Buckethead. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot of fun.
