That track list is sooo much better than that for Guitar Hero II. I love that Hier Kommt Alex is on there... but equally disappointed that Ruby is on there. I fucking hate that song. But there's a lot of good crap on there. I'll hopefully check it out someday.

I haven't played the games, but I would've expected there to be much more songs for a $100+ game.

By the way, there's a fucking awesome arcade game over here that features an actual drum set. It's quite unexpected to see Chinese schoolgirls lighting up the drums at the mall, and provides a cool ambiance.

So I played it today, and I'm sure I'll be playing it all day. Which sucks because I have work due tomorrow, but that's besides the point.

This game is awesome, but the new guitar controllers take some getting used to. Also, FCPREMIX is insane, even on hard mode.

Just played GHIII for about 2-3 hours. I like it more than the other two, since there's actual variety in the choice of songs rather than just being standard buttrock and stuff like that. "Story of My Life" and "Kool Thing" are amazingly fun to play.

Llamas
10-30-2007, 07:23 PM
I might actually reserve a bundle set for Rock Band for PS2. I think the track list for GH3 is good, but I actually think Rock Band's list looks even better. Plus, I just think that it combines the fun of Guitar Hero and Singstar, while adding in drums. I can't really justify spending $160 on a video game, but maybe it'll be like a Christmas present to myself. :)

* "Wave of Mutilation" – Pixies
* "When You Were Young" – The Killers

I'm really jealous of Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria. I thought they sucked until I heard that song, and I wish it was on Guitar Hero.

I like all the downloadable songs for Rock Band, too. Can you do that with Guitar Hero III?

Also, two of the 13 unlockable tracks are

* "Brainpower" – Freezepop
* "Pleasure (Pleasure)" – Bang Camaro

And the downloadable stuff so far is:

* Who's Next – The Who[36]
* "One" – Metallica[38]
* An additional full album by Metallica[14]
* 18 songs by The Grateful Dead (including "Casey Jones", "Sugar Magnolia", "Touch of Grey", "Truckin'", and "Uncle John's Band")

So, I seen Guitar Hero III came out for PC and I was like "Fuck yeah, I'm going to get that." I have 300$'s and I planned on getting a refurbished Xbox360 and then GHIII for PC. Then I played Rock Band.

Rock Band blows guitar hero out of the water. It has a lot of better songs and it is so much more fun, omg! Bass is probably the most fun (maybe because I'm pretty good at it), drums are incredibly hard for me, but really fun. I haven't figured out the singing yet, when I sing with a normal voice I'm to high (I have a deep voice) so I have to sing like baritone. Guitar is fun too but I don't play it much because I like/am better at bass.

Playing this game with 4-8 people is the most fun you will ever have with a video game.

Needless to say, I plan on getting a 360 and saving up 70$ more for Rock Band.

Also, I'd like to mention that I looked at one of the other guitar hero threads. There was a conversation along the lines of mentioning how good you are and people who can play it can't necessarily play guitar. It's the same as saying "Yeah, I beat Halo on Legendary last night." but no one has brought up the point that I can't fight a full scale war against an alien civilization all by myself.

Poorly formed argument, but I wanted to get my point out.

I really really want rock band. I like guitar hero, and I LOVE singstar... so I'm a huge fan of the idea of combining those two games plus adding drums, and even a bass. The drums idea sounds awesome to me. I like playing drums, but I don't own a kit and even if I did, it's not like you can ever play drums in your house haha. Sure it's not the same, but come on.. what fun!

You can get it for $70?? I thought it was $160. I really want it.

WebDudette
12-24-2007, 01:36 AM
It is 170 (160 for PS2), but I meant that a 360 would cost me 200$ of my 300$ so I would still need an extra 70ish$.

A friend of mine (who plays drums) was commenting that the drumming was relatively accurate, as much as a rubber pad can be. Like a crash course into drumming with an electric kit.

The bass for Rock Band is so much better then Guitar Hero and most songs aren't insanely difficult on Expert (for guitar and bass at least). The guitar is overall a lot nicer then the GH one once you get used to it (but you can also sync the GH one to Rock Band).

Being able to create a 4 piece band with a bunch of friends and traveling the world is so much fun. The interface is way better then GH, you can save your friends if they fail a song by using your energy (essentially Star Power) or you can all use it at once to get a huge multiplier. If your on vox and not doing anything you can pretty much freestyle.

The customizable character, though not that improtant, are insanely cool. I customized my guy into a huge rocker with a black and pink faux hawk with matching black and pink clother/guitar.

I rambled so much, but I could seriously keep going.

I just bid on a Guitar Hero 3 bundle for Wii on eBay. I'd never be able to afford or play Rock Band even if it came out on the Wii, so this might be my best option. The songs on it, from the lists I've seen, are nowhere NEAR as good as those on Rock Band. The songs on Rock Band are amazing. Apparently, more song packs will be available on the Wii version in the coming months, so that's cool.

WebDudette
12-24-2007, 02:07 AM
Guitar Hero III is also insanely fun, especially if you are really good at it. I think Rock Band is quite easier on the guitar/bass parts compared to GH so it can get boring.

Also, when I have a bad ass Groovy Bass line going with a 6x multiplier and my whole band goes into overdrive for an overall 8x multiplier do they stack or do I get 8x or what? Basically, whats the correlation between a overall multiplier and an individual multiplier?

JohnnyNemesis
12-24-2007, 02:11 AM
I dunno, but if this is true:

I think Rock Band is quite easier on the guitar/bass parts compared to GH.

I'm in huuuuuuuuuuge trouble.

Then again, tonight was only my first time playing, and I was getting consistent high 80s/low 90s on even some of the "tough" songs, so maybe I just need to play more. I nailed 97% on my first time playing Orange Crush, and 90% on Dani California, so I guess I'm alright for a beginner. This is on Medium difficulty. I'll move up eventually, natch.

WebDudette
12-24-2007, 02:13 AM
You'll be fine on Guitar Hero then. I mean that if you play GH on Expert and nail everything a lot of the song on Rockband on Expert may be relatively easy.

JohnnyNemesis

I'm pretty much the same, I get so easily over whelmed on Hard on GH. My friends say it's because I don't play enough. I'm pretty sure they are wrong and it's just impossible and they are Gods.

I can 5-star any song on easy no trouble, though sometimes it takes a playthrough or two first. Medium is difficult for me; I usually 4-star at best. Hard etc are impossible.

Though, this is the first time that I've ever owned a GH, I got it today, and I'd only played once before.

There are some points by people who play guitar that are relevant. Like, I bought a $450 guitar (plus amp, cables, pedals, all that), so a $70 guitar simulator seems outlandish to add on to my expenses. It's not a holier-than-thou thing, but more of a "I have a guitar, why do I need a video game where I simulate playing guitar?"

My brother got it for Hanukkah, though, so I have no problems playing it every once in a while. I'm mediocre at it, having trouble with Hard mode, but being able to play almost every song on Medium without problem. GH is almost NOTHING like playing a real guitar, though, so when people try to make that connection, I am all for their decapitation.

I hear ya, and I kinda made the same sort of comment before actually playing Rock Band. Then I realized that it's really not a simulator; it's more of a straight up rhythm game set to music. The price argument makes the most sense to me though.

I sorta make a connection to the NES classics Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, which people think is a boxing game but is really just a rhythm game.

I'd like to ask those of you who've played Rock Band just how different from Guitar Hero it is? I wanna get GH3 for Wii because I'm totally addicted to Rock Band but don't wanna spend $170 and have to get other people in the right mood just to enjoy a game. I know a lot of people have made comparison, but is it essentially the same game, as I'm assuming and basing my purchase on? I've never played the Guitar Hero series.

I've done my own research (Wikipedia, reviews on Gamespot and other places, etc), but I'd like to hear from y'all before moving forward. Thoughts?

the thing is, professional football players play Madden games and such.

I play tennis in real life, yet I still think video game tennis is a blast.

I just really really don't get the whole "I play real guitar, so guitar hero isn't fun" thing.

coke_a_holic
12-25-2007, 09:26 PM
Well, yeah, but playing tennis or football is slightly less convenient than just picking up the guitar and strumming. You need to gather people to make teams, you need to leave the house, you need to make a commitment. If I want to play guitar, I can just pick up my aaaaaaxxxxxeeee and strum, without shelling out $70 to play a video game based around the instrument.

I never said it wasn't fun, because it definitely is, I'm just saying that I understand why guitarists would be hesitant to make an expensive purchase (as far as video games/teenage wages go) for the game.

The price thing is mainly why I didn't buy Rock Band. I needed to buy a new guitar and amp, and it set me back about 400 bucks.

Rock Band is so much more fun, but I have yet to play it with less than 4 people at a time. I know that the guitar parts in GHIII are much harder. I usually play bass in Rock Band, but I still have fun with it, because with the new controller I can play it like an actual bass. I also like that bass can have a 6x multiplier instead of 4x like the other instruments.

By the way, you don't have to worry about getting people in the right mood to enjoy Rock Band. People will always be in the right mood.

I play guitar as well, but come on. You can pick up the guitar and strum, but you don't have a full band and you don't get points or anything. If you don't have a band playing with you, it's not nearly as fun. I play guitar, but I love guitar hero, because I can play with a band whenever I want. In real life, getting the equipment and people together is just as inconvenient.

And if you just put on a song and play over it, that's no fun because the guitar part is already going.

Also, if you're having a party, sometimes it's fun to bust out that kind of game and compete. You can't do that with a normal guitar.

I never said it wasn't fun, because it definitely is, I'm just saying that I understand why guitarists would be hesitant to make an expensive purchase (as far as video games/teenage wages go) for the game.
Well I've never heard the argument being "I don't see a reason to buy it" so much as "that game is lame, I already play guitar".

Thanks for the input. And as far as the mood goes: you're right, but I dunno if I can stomach spending $170 on a video game (I'm not ballin' like that...), even though it is one of the most fun games I've played in years.

Also, don't you only have a Wii? You'd have to spend more to buy an Xbox360 or PS3 (PS2 version is utter crap and no one ever should buy it), and I don't think one game is worth that much.

JohnnyNemesis

True indeed, I only have a Wii, but Harmonix said that Rock Band is likely going to be released for it soon enough. And even though GH3 is considerably more affordable, I don't know if I can stomach THAT price tag either. But I might. I'm selling my cell phone, so that'll help me get the monies.

From wikipedia:

The PlayStation 2 version of Rock Band contains a much more stripped down version of the Band World Tour mode, as 2-4 local players will only be able to play by completing predetermined tiers of songs ordered by difficulty. Players cannot create their own characters, nor can they choose a city, venue, or a setlist to play.
Admittedly the gameplay is still the same, but it's a very basic version of the "real" game.

Well I've never heard the argument being "I don't see a reason to buy it" so much as "that game is lame, I already play guitar".

I actually do pretty much get a full band on a whim; I use garageband and record rhythm tracks with my bass guitar and guitar, then use a drum machine, then have fun with it with either my keyboard or just by putting a solo over it. It's hardly inconvenient, and it tends to be a lot more fun for me than playing songs people have already written, be it with the guitar or through guitar hero.

I mean, like I've said, Guitar Hero is a lot of fun, it's a great time waster and I love being able to play with other people, it's just a $70 rhythm game and, as a high schooler, I don't really have that kind of money to throw around. I've also found that every 5 or 6 songs, I get bored or I get a headache and have to stop, which makes playing it less exciting for me. This compared to my brother, who's already beaten the game on medium and more than halfway through Hard mode. He's 5 years younger than me and he kicks my ass :(

Meh, well now it's just getting nit-picky, because I don't consider it really a hassle to play tennis. I have a racket and an abundance of tennis balls... in Minnesota, I have had a lot of friends who lived right by me who play, and there are indoor courts close to where I've lived. All it required was calling up a friend, grabbing my racket, and walking a couple blocks. Yet I still enjoyed playing video game tennis. I just think video games give a different feel. I think in your case, it's not that you don't love guitar hero because you already play guitar, but instead it's just not a game you love. Getting a headache/getting bored are things that would quite possibly still happen to you if you didn't play guitar already. I think your situation is completely different from the people who generally complain about guitar hero.

Ricky, as far as Rock Band to GH goes. If you don't think you can regularly get 4 people together to play it (or at least three) I think you probably want to go with GH. Unless you are more interested in drums/signing it will be a pretty similar experience. But if you think you can regularly get 4 people together to do a world tour you might want to go for it.

Something I would like to add to the GH argument is that while a lot of my friends play instruments I actually don't. So its pretty awesome that we can still get together and play some sick ass song and I don't have to go spend 400$ on a guitar that I probably will never be very good at.

Once I 5-star Cult of Personality, Raining Blood, and Cliffs of Dover, I'll have 5-starred every song on Medium. Which means I'll have no choice but to play on Hard. Which means I'm going to see orange frets in my nightmares and fucking cry.

I was in this EXACT SAME SITUATION.

I'm at the point now where I can five star any medium song easily, and I've 100% on a few including Cliffs of Dover (fucking love that song). But Hard? Ha! I can barely even 4 star any of them.

JohnnyNemesis
01-28-2008, 09:29 PM
Haha, good to know I'm not alone. I got through Slow Ride and Hit Me With Your Best Shot on Hard, but with laughably low scores (I got 3-stars, which is the minimum, but I deserved like, 1.5) and the fear of God (represented by orange frets, of course) put in me.

I just need to master that damn fret. The speed doesn't really bother me, but the added notes do. The fast solos on One and Knights of Cydonia, for example, are damn near impossible for me even on Medium. But I'm sure I can rock Hard and Expert once I get used to hitting that orange fret and feeling comfortable with it.

Sidewinder
01-28-2008, 09:38 PM
It's not so much hitting it that's my problem, it's that once I do, the rest of my hand doesn't know what the fuck is going on and basically takes the next twenty minutes to recover from the shock of being thrown out of its home (position).

JohnnyNemesis
01-28-2008, 09:41 PM
YES! Exactly!!!

In fact, my friends often laugh when they watch me play on Hard, even though I destroy them all in the game. And it's because every time I actually hit an orange note and try to get into position again, I desperately and sadly yell "FUCK!!" and get all panicky. It's fun for them, but omg h8.

The drums and vocals are insane. I'm currently working on Hard for the drums.

I'm still in easy for the mic. Expert for the Bass and Guitar.

I also like most of the songs in Rock Band far better than Guitar Hero.

I don't know, I've never been to akin to Rock Band. It's the kind of game where you need others for a good experience. With Guitar Hero, you can play by yourself for hours and have just as much fun if you were with other people. That is why I don't pay for games like Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, etc.

So I traded my GH1 for my friend's GH3 the other day to check it out. WTF, why does the song selection suck so much?? Half of the bands on there I've barely even heard of, or were one hit wonders... and it's supposed to be legends of rock? Grrr.

Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of the bosses and stuff. Encores are okay, but I don't see the point. And they really cheesed out on this one, with the story lines and videos. Gawd. haha. But it's fun to play Holiday in Cambodia and When You Were Young. :)

Oh, and it did get harder. GH1 is easier. I beat it on Hard really quickly. I've had to replay or go to practice mode on a few songs in GH3.

I love the cheesiness though. It made it fun for me. The bosses were okay, but I never really liked Rage or GnR in the first place. But bosses are an epic part of video game history.

Out of the GH soundtracks this one is pretty mediocre. I like the music, and enjoy playing it. But beforehand I knew of perhaps most of the bands, but had only heard maybe half or a third of the songs. And naturally liked even less. However the majority of them did grow on me.

GT 1 though has the best ratio of songs that I know to songs that I know and like.

GT 2 having the worst of the 3 (being mostly metal, but I think it will be fun to play anyways.)

Played Guitar Hero III for the first time tonight. In fact, my first time playing any Guitar Hero game, and I fucking love it.

Of course, as it's my first time and me having the worst hand-eye coordination in the world it took a wee while to get settled, but I happily mastered the bass for Sunshine Of Your Love, Suck My Kiss and Bulls On Parade on medium after an hour or so. Yes, they're probably the easiest songs on there but they're bloody fun and I'm just a n00b!!!!!1!!11

Thought I'd have a giggle and attempt Dragonforce on expert... Didn't even make 1%.

to be honest, I think it would've been awesome if guitar hero had you start out as a novice practicing the guitar in your basement, worked up to forming a band, naming the band and such, and practicing in the house... then playing a crappy bar with 15 people in the crowd, and going on. I think they could make an interesting story line from that. They could still have what it currently is as an option, but have the career mode start from scratch. I dunno, I think that'd be kinda cool instead of doing tutorials and then going straight to playing shows. But then again, I'm a huge nerd. :P

Btw people, Rock Band has been confirmed for Wii. It's entirely possible that the Wii guitar for GH3 could work for Rock Band too (especially considering that all the XBox 360 guitars for GH 2 and 3 work with Rock Band), so I might get a copy of the game disc only (if not in stores, eBay is always good for that shit).

I can't find/remember the source (might've been Gamespot), but the article said that Harmonix is looking to improve on Rock Band for the Wii version since it's coming out so late and there's time to make adjustments, gauge fan reaction and act accordingly, etc. Certain DLC tracks will already be on the disc, but who knows what the Wii might have to sacrifice to accommodate the game.

Yeah, but you can't use GH3 controllers with Rock Band on PS3, because Activision is being a bunch of assholes. So, we'll see.

Me thinks that they will include a bunch of DLC on the disc. Also, I'm guessing that it wouldn't have DLC, since the hard-drive is so small. Though, they could use SD card support.

Gah! You're right. I'm wrong. I forgot that, like of course GH2 controllers would work with Rock Band considering the fact that Harmonix made both games.

If I can't use the GH3 controller, I won't be getting Rock Band. No way am I ever paying more than $50-$60 for a video game no matter what it is (I got GH3 as a gift). So we'll see.

Yeah, I was just gonna mention that, but as I stated above: Activision's being a bitch about the PS3 controllers. The only reason the Xbox360's controllers work fine with each other is because the GH2's controller isn't much different from GH3's and Harmonix had that in mind. Both the PS3 and the Wii don't have GH2, so... yeah.

I already knew these songs were full of awesome, but I'm very happy that GHIII reminded me:

Matchbook Romance - Monsters

It's definitely The Metal. Anyway, I forgot that I beat it on Hard, the last song (Devil Went Down to Gerogia cover) is sooo much fun. I wish I had Xbox live so I could get the actual song.

Beat 'Before I Forget' after a total of 4 tries, I just had to cheat* a little bit. I also beat Stricken on my 2-3 try. Trying to beat 3's & 7's now, its like everything I really suck at in guitar hero all put into one song.

*Cheat as in I played just enough notes to stay alive and skipped the ones that would mess me up.

Another Edit: One practice and two failures later I beat 3's & 7's. Tier 8 here I come :(.

Congrats! Well done! I have a problem with that song since my guitar is kinda sensitive for vibrations and therefore it activates the star power when I play that fast shit before the solo. But I'll give it a shot right now just for fun.

Update: No success... Tried 4 times.

1st try: Activated Star Power to late.
2nd try: Got past fast solo A but fucked up at fast solo b.
3rd try: Star Power activated during fast shit before the solo.
4th try: Tried to stand really still to avoid activating Star Power and therefore I missed lots of notes and started the solo at yellow and busted.

I read a Game Informer a year or so ago and One Armed Scissor was one of the number 1 requested songs for Guitar Hero.

Ok. Today I passed Cliffs of Dover on Expert.

I am the best ever.

I decided yesterday that it was time to for me to beat Raining Blood. So I played it over and over and over again but couldn't make it. Started trying again about an hour ago and hey, I just beat it! :)

So now there's only Lou. Since I can't pass the actual song on Expert, it's gonna be real tough in Battle Mode. It might take a while before I find the strength to start trying.

I know, I know... I'm the only one posting here but I don't care :). I beat Lou on expert a few weeks back and now I did this:

here's an idea... pick up a real guitar!

Why?

I mean, if this thread was about people who wanted to play real guitar, then that would make sense. But this is about a video game. So...wha?

Free?

One more reason to pick up a real guitar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlnP-LJBzUc) ! :D
I also don't think that GBH2 was offending there, I can't imagine how such thread can have some very serious posts.
