I can't bring myself to make the thread "What is your favourite animal and why?"

Fine.. be lazy, I'll do it for you.

dog. no contest. dogs are the most miraculous creatures EVER. plus they exhibit the most variety (in terms of features) out of all the species on earth, which is really cool.

horses, llamas, alpacas, baby tigers, sea otters and manatees are pretty sweet too.

Favorite would probably be cats. I <3 them.
Semi-related, I can't tell if I find tarsiers cute or horribly ugly and terrifying.

They apparently get so stressed in captivity that they'll kill themselves a lot of the time.

That things eyes are fuggin hauntingly scary. Like it's looking into my soul and seeing my sins and judging me.

But cats ftw.

aw omg what a cute/fugly thing. *pokes it*

apparently chinchillas get really stressed out/die from stress too... which is sad, seeing as they're sold as pets to little kids. bah.

I agree 100%.
Plus, my dog is just like me. In her laziness, random bursts of hyperactivity, and attention-whore-iness (among other things I consider similar).

Does your dog bark at rape victims?

Cats, definitely. I can't think of a better animal. Cats are the only things that I love without any exception.

Actually I love all animals except bugs and monkeys but if I have to tell the ones I really love the list would be dogs, horses, parrots, dolphins, panda bears, penguins and polar bears.

That's true of lots of animals to some extent (like rabbits, they go into shock and stop eating until they die) but the tarsiers are known for banging their head against the cage until they die or drowning themselves in their water dish.

The fact that they're primates and are even in the same sub-order as humans/monkeys/apes makes it all slightly more unsettling.

Sunny

Tarsiers are indeed awesome.

The fact that they're primates and are even in the same sub-order as humans/monkeys/apes makes it all slightly more unsettling. This is debated, but you're right, that taxonomy is increasingly being favored more over placing them with lemurs/lorises/galagos.

I'm glad this thread was made. I like:

The star-nosed moles give me the creeps. If I saw one before reading about them, I probably would've assumed it had something growing on it's nose and tried killing it before it got near me.

What is the giant fucker, Whiplash? And why is there a cartoon sandwich in the deep sea?

My favourite animal is a human being. Why? Because we're top of every food chain.

Aside from humans, it's an eagle.

Whiplash

It's somekind of giant jellyfish, And I don't know what the sandwich is about.

wait. i wonder about this one. like... what about lions/sharks/crocs? sure, we have the weapons to deal with them, but if we encounter them unprepared, we're totally fucked. not to mention eaten.

Whiplash
09-24-2007, 02:24 PM
Oi mate, Are you forgettin' 'bout me old mate the crocodile hunter?

The man spends his entire life fighting the most dangerous animals on this planet and he gets killed by a stingray off all things.

Andy
09-24-2007, 02:25 PM
But yes, we have the ingenuity to create the weapons to compensate for our lack of sharp claws/teeth etc.

Llamas
09-24-2007, 02:26 PM
apparently chinchillas get really stressed out/die from stress too... which is sad, seeing as they're sold as pets to little kids. bah.

Yeah... I had a chinchilla for a few months that died because of stress... it was my first pet, and I just didn't understand exactly to what extent stress could affect it so. It was awful.

One would likely expect me to pick llamas... while llamas are cool and all, I am quite a fan of goats. I also love Crayfish, chinchillas, rabbits, dogs, many varieties of insects, millipedes, geckos, minks, stingrays, etc, etc, etc. I like most animals... just keep me away from centipedes and most varieties of worms (earth worms are okay). Oh, and any sort of wasp. Fuck those assholes.

Sunny

true, but the animals i mentioned do end up on top of the foodchain every now and then. ;p

i'm going to mississippi for thanksgiving and i really don't wanna get pwnzored by a gator. ugh.

It could easily be argued that a human without tools is along the same lines as a lion/shark/croc without teeth. Our survival as a species has been almost completely dependent on our use of tools. Our children are insanely weak and unable to take care of themselves for years while most other species the babies end up dead if they can't walk within minutes of being born.

My favorite animal is Mudkipz, I leik it.

My real favorite animal is the cow. Doesn't do shit, moos and eats grass. I also like zebras, snakes and my favorite insect is the praying mantis.

This reminded me of when wanted to do an English paper on snakes V.S. Praying Mantis and which one was better. My teacher didn't like the idea, because they were two completly different creatures and I don't think I got to do the paper. [/useless story]

you know that like...white cotton batting stuff people give hamsters to make nests? my friend's hamster used it to hang itself from the top bars of it's cage =\

my favorite animal is also a dog. mine is soooo awesome.

i also like cats, yellow ducks, and hamsters. yuppp.

Sunny

christ. hamsters these days *shakes head*

can someone who knows stuff about cats explain this to me?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HhbCEGo5xY&mode=related&search=

WHAT is this cat doing and WHY?

i'm assuming the cat is not *actually* on acid, considering this was on tv... but... wtf?

Andy
09-24-2007, 04:10 PM
Yeah, that's a SpazCat.

I don't know if it's because I'm tired but I found that clip pretty disturbing. My cats never did anything like that, they were too proud to make fools of themselves in such an undignified way.

Sunny
09-24-2007, 04:19 PM
i thought it was sort of disturbing too... like, if this is just a goofy kitty, then all is well... but i wonder if someone was being mean to it or fed it stuff they shouldn't have.

WebDudette

Uhh... yeah that video was pretty disturbing. I think it may just be something like peanut butter in it's mouth or something. Or its choking.

Also, one of my favorite animals are sloths. They're just so cute and lazy. The little fuckers mentioned earlier are pretty awesome too:

My favorite animal by far is the Chameleon. I just find it so awesome that a creature can go onto any natural object and blend into the same color seamlessly. I once saw a picture of a wood, with a Chameleon on the ground, and I could not even see it. It was camoflagued within the leaves. I think that is pretty cool.

I knew a guy who was fishing in a fjord in Norway, real early in the morning. He looks down into the water around his boat at some point and notices that his entire boat is directly on top of the center of one of these things. He got so freaked out that he just rowed back in and drank some coffee instead.

I know those giant Jellyfish things are real and all, but that picture with the diver looked so incredibly fake. So a google search produced this:

http://diverssite.com/billeder/diverssiteintern/giant_jellyfish.jpg

Unless he switched on his stealth suit, I was quite right.

Whiplash
09-25-2007, 08:04 AM
I think the diver was edited out in that picture, You can see a color change in the place the diver was and you can still see a part of the thing he was holding.

mrconeman
09-25-2007, 08:25 AM
Hmm, It's possible I suppose. But I dunno, look where the divers body blocks out the jelly fish, it just looks fake.

nieh
09-25-2007, 08:50 AM
Jellyfish can get pretty big, but not THAT big. That's big enough to swallow a person whole while the biggest jellyish on record is something like 2m (7') in diameter. Unless it's not actually a jellyfish.

wheelchairman
09-25-2007, 10:14 AM
Of course the diver picture is fake, a giant jellyfish's tentacles can be longer than a 4 story building (we just wouldn't see them), he'd be paralyzed right there.

However the largest jellyfish is exactly what Nieh said:
