Punchline http://www.myspace.com/punchline
Instrumentally similar to the Offspring. Although alot of people disagree. One of the few quasi-emo bands that can elevate my mood. Check out the song "Don't Try This At Home". Definately worth checking them out.

Manchester Orchestra http://www.myspace.com/manchesterorchestra
I really think these guys are going to be huge. They're not really my kind of genre, but they impress me enough to be my new flavor of the year. The songs are beautiful. I saw them live in NYC a few weeks ago, after analyzing their new record. I was blown away to see that this soft meak voice actually comes out of a burly football player framed guy. These guys are amazing and worth your attention. Check out "Wolves at Night" and "I can bearly breathe", they have a rare song thats my favorite called "Otherside"

Idle Vice http://www.myspace.com/idlevice
I go to many many shows on Long Island, rarely do I ever buy cds from these bands, because theyre a dime a dozen (remember bands like Taking Back Sunday and Brand New crawled out from the LI Scene, but theres still hundreds of unsigned bands). Very very impressive. Shortly after I bought their CD, they got signed and are in the middle of a massive US tour. Check them out. "Vain" is my favorite song.

In For Red
http://www.myspace.com/inforred
I think the next big east coast band. Though personally not my thing, their momentum is unmatched.

All Grown Up http://www.myspace.com/allgrownup
Good friends of mine, but honestly the best band on Long Island right now, set to explode all over the country any day now.

I couldn't stand Punchline in the Heavy.com band contest and I still don't like them. Everyone else is pretty okay.

Horrible. They toured with Lucky Boys Confusion and they're unfunny attention-whores who play excessively bland music.

I'll check out the rest when I have time.

Punchline sucked, as those before me have pointed out. Manchester Orchestra had some pretty good songs, might listen to them again. Idle Vice sounded like every other fucking band in the world to me. In For Red were just bad, but the minute I saw an album cover featuring a model in lingerie pointing a gun at another model in lingerie's head, I knew not to expect anything good. All Grown Up seemed to me like a fun band to watch live, but as it is their vocals are recorded horribly and their songs are too goddamn long.

Also: no fucking way are any of these guys the "next big" anything.

BREAK's comment makes me feel justified in the fact that I automatically assumed all of the bands Mark would list were/are horrible.

lol fag, listen to better music

ps: BREAK, make a thread like this with good bands, you asshole.

I actually kind of like Punchline... their songs aren't bad. They didn't try to be funny when I saw them live, so that was good. But I'm embarrassed to like them now. :P

But no, none of those bands are the next big thing. No way Punchline is especially.

Get the fuck off my interwebs.

P.S. I agree with Treez/I saw the same lineup he did.

Llamas

I saw that same lineup, too... but they didn't tell jokes at the concert I saw. Maybe it was later on, and they'd realized the jokes were lame and ditched them. I dunno.

Bands I like have a tendency to release a couple of albums and then break up without ever hitting the big time, so...no. Not that I ever claimed to be a major label talent scout in the first place. But whatever, I'll play. Confining myself to local bands as you did, so it's my scene v. yours, lololol.

Victim Effect (http://www.purevolume.com/victimeffect)

These guys play cheesy overblown prog-metal and look like tools. On the other hand, they have a chick that rocks a bitchin' keytar and even uses a motherfucking TALKBOX, which is 14 sedimentary layers of win.

The New Nervous (http://myspace.com/thenewnervous)

Just listen, I have no idea how to preface this. Post-neo-ndie-mo or something like that.

Another Statistic (http://www.myspace.com/anotherstatistic)

I really like these guys' melodic sensibility. Though I'm not sure I dig what the girl singer does with her voice. "Something in the Water" and "Misunderstanding" are the songs I like best by them.

Listen, say what you think.

Edit: to eleaborate: The Victim Effect was really good and I can't even place why.

I like their music but really don't like their singer. They actually kinda-sorta remind me of my brother's band in that respect, plus you can hear they have a lot of similar influences even though the music ends up sounding quite a bit different.

Didn't NSI break up and reform with a different singer? I thought I remembered you saying they got rid of him.

Break wins.

No, the state of Utah wins. Who knew we had a better scene than Long Fucking Island?

No, they have a new drummer and changed their name to Brass (lame!) but they're still together. I wish they replaced the singer instead of the drummer but I have no control over these things. They recorded a new album over the last few months but it's still being mixed/mastered and stuff so I haven't heard it yet. Did I ever send you their last EP, In Embers? It was their most consistent thing to date.

Come out and smash'em up!

Well actually, Manchester Orchestra is from Georgia, and Punchline is from Pittsburg. MO was my artsy pick btw.

Also I didnt even mention the band I manage... didnt think anyone would give them a fair listen.

Oops, forgot to fact-check my post before submitting. Now at least I don't feel bad for only giving 3 bands.

And if that shit passes for "artsy" in your world...whatever dude. Go read some music criticism or something.

For the record I'll give anything a fair chance, though that doesn't mean I can always make it through a whole song.

If you didn't feel the need to point out that you manage them then I'm sure people would've given them a fair listen if they listened to them at all.

You too? Why does anybody give a fuck whether a group is gonna be BIG? In my bullshit filter, that translates to "Listen to this shit because pretty soon everyone else will! You want to be cool, don't you?"

I just saw a band tonight who, the last time I saw them, had about 3 people standing up front watching them and they were giving away free burned EPs with 4 or 5 songs on them. They weren't particularly good. Now, a couple of years later, they've had a couple of songs on the radio, and the show was almost sold out. You could tell the type of show it was by the vast number of miniskirts visible in the crowd, despite the 5 deg. C weather. They still aren't very good. To be fair though, they were better than I remember.

It was annoying cause I came to see the opening band who have a few decent songs, and I couldn't even get near enough the front to see them at all, without going elbow crazy.

Hooray for the next big thing?

I'm all for playful joking and stuff, but in an effort to keep this thread on-topic (and in the interest of fairness), can we keep the Mark bashing to a minimum? Bash the bands he posted all you want, but try to draw the line. Thanks.

ps. I know you folks weren't that serious, but there's a difference between the playful bashing that always happens here and the fact that most people clearly hate Mark. Try to keep it cool...

pps. Ewww, I had to do mod stuff here. Makes me feel dirty sometimes.

ppps. I personally hate Punchline.

By the words of mighty Dexter Holland; " I listened to 'Fool' and 'First One', awesome stuff!"

Finnish melodic punk/rock. Their new album in my opinion best of the year, clearly.
