What are YOUR top 10 cds from this year? Yes, THIS year. Not last year, not upcoming cds for January 2008, I'm talkin' about January to December in 2007. If you want to wait until you get some new cd to say, that's perfectly alright. I might change my list when I get the new Electric Six cd or if someone mentions a cd that I forgot about but loved.

Mine:

1. Bomb The Music Industry! - Get Warmer
2. Say Anything - In Defense Of The Genre
3. Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere In The Between
4. Gogol Bordello - Super Taranta!
5. Lily Allen - Alright, Still
6. Against Me! - New Wave
7. Band Of Horses - Cease To Begin
8. Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends
9. Kanye West - Graduation
10. The Good Life - Help Wanted Nights

2.) The Apples in Stereo- New Magnetic Wonder
3.) Andrew Bird- Armchair Apocrypha
4.) Blonde Redhead- 23
5.) Elliott Smith- New Moon

12.) Radiohead- In Rainbows

Okay, so I really need to listen to Hissing Fauna and The Stage Names (I downloaded both a few days ago because I love Okkervil and because I know I'd love Of Montreal), and I really need to go back to Strawberry Jam and Reunion Tour. I've got something to do this weekend!

eh, i can't really be bothered to list many. mostly a bland year. however!

xbxrx - sounds
cutting pink with knives - populuxxe
holy molar - cavity search
jaguar love - demo
john zorn - six litanies for heliogabalus
silver daggers - new high & ord

are all releases that i've enjoyed mightily this year.

Forza
11-30-2007, 03:52 PM
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

I don't think anything important besides these few albums have been released this year. Furthermore I've been moving more towards the seventies rather than to the future. In Rainbows was way better than I had expected, so that's my album for this year. Funny thing being though that I also started to discover good releases from 2006 in this year, I always lag a year behind.

I considered making a thread like this in late December, but with a poll and with nominations and stuff. This idea's pretty good too.

A Wilhelm Scream - Career Suicide
Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell
Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between
Chiodos - Bone Palace Ballet
The Fall of Troy - Manipulator
Dethklok - The Dethalbum
Blaqk Audio - CexCells
Against Me! - New Wave
Big D and the Kids Table - Strictly Rude
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

I put them in order of which I remembered them.

I would have included BTMI!'s Get Warmer, but I haven't listened to enough of it to judge it yet.

Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between
The Chinese Stars - Listen To Your Left Brain
Justice - †
Kanye West - Graduation
Blaqk Audio - Cex Cells
XO Skeleton - Bored by Heaven
The Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist
Holy Molar - Cavity Search

Something like that.

I've gotten in to a ton of new music this year, but most of it wasn't actually new. I also had to check like 5 albums because I wasn't sure if they came out late last year or early this year.

i don't remember what came out this year. is there a website that has a list of all the cds released in 2007? anyways, without something like that, i remember liking these things that have already been listed (otherwise, for the most part, i wouldnt know what year they were released)...

smashing pumpkins - zeitgeist
minus the bear - planet of ice
say anything - in defense of the genre
of montreal - hissing fauna
the apples in stereo - new magnetic wonder

ummm.....yeah. if anyone offhand knows of a list, i'll make a slightly better decision...

BREAK
12-01-2007, 12:00 AM
I'm always embarrassed to make these because it's so impossible to listen to everything that comes out in a year. I could listen to 1,000 new albums every week and it still wouldn't cover a decent percentage of the many, many new releases that drop each year. However, I really liked these:

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Zozobra - Harmonic Tremors
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Battles - Mirrored
Yea Big & Kid Static - s/t
M.I.A. - Kala
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Burial - Untrue
Jay-Z - American Gangster
Pet Genius - s/t
El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Nina Nastasia & Jim White - You Follow Me
Wu-Tang Clan - 8 Diagrams
Liars - s/t
A Place To Bury Strangers - s/t
Rob Sonic - Sabotage Gigante

There's a big stack of shit I still haven't listened to yet (including The Austerity Program, Ungdomskulen, Dälek, Doseone, Grinderman, The National, Les Savy Fav, Ghostface Killah, Holy Fuck and a fuckton of other stuff) that I hope will make the list eventually.

Oh holy shit, did Let's Stay Friends come out this year? I don't want to have to edit my list again, but that cd fucking ruled.

EDIT: Fucking hell, it did come out this year.

Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
oh lawl wtf. Apparently Dream Theater released this 6 months and this is the first time I'm hearing about it. I fail hard.*opens up soulseek*

I seriously haven't listened to much music at all this year. I still can't believe I missed my favorite band's new album. God knows what else I've missed out on.

modest mouse - we were dead before the ship even sank
fountains of wayne - traffic and weather
rufus wainwright - release the stars
smashing pumpkins - zeitgeist

I disagree with everyone that said this was a bad year for music. Looking at my list, I love every single one of those albums. Last year, out of the 10 I listed, I had that reaction to maybe 6 of them, and I just filled the rest out with "well, these are good, but not great".

I always laugh when I see that post, because every year this thread gets a few people that say that.

This is actually the first year in a while where I've been really been listening to new releases more than older ones. Usually I don't get into stuff until a few years after it's released, but I was on the ball this year.

coke_a_holic
12-01-2007, 12:44 PM
I agree with Jakebert; while I wasn't necessarily completely in love with all the albums I posted, I certainly listen to all of the ones I have up quite a bit. Also, my hard-on for BTMI! is immense. Like, I don't know how much whoring I'm going to have to do for more people to recognize the joy :(.

Btw, I listened to Hissing Fauna yesterday. Holy fucking shit. I ended up downloading The Sunlandic Twins roughly one hour later.

Jakebert
12-01-2007, 02:16 PM
The only 3 on mine that might be questionable to me are the Against Me, Bad Religion, and Ted Leo ones. The Against Me album and Ted Leo albums are both good, but nothing spectacular, and if I didn't like both bands as much as I do, they probably would have been ignored them.

The Bad Religion album was good, but only really because it stands as being a lot better than the stuff they've done for the past few years. It's kind of the opposite effect that the other two had with me.

Bazza
12-01-2007, 02:23 PM
Jack Penate and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly's albums were highlights of the year for me. I'm sure there's many more but my brain cannot think right now.

12-01-2007, 03:12 PM
I didn't get a whole lot of new releases this year, and a few of the ones I was looking forward to ended up kind of disappointing. Theres also a few albums I never manged to pick up (Lily Allen, plus for some reason the most recent Nellie McKay album was never carried in any of the stores around here). Ones I remember being really good and/or great:

Travis Morrison - All Y'all
Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between
New Pornographers - Challengers
Pinback - Autumn of the Seraph
Horse the Band - A Natural Death (this one ended up growing on me, but I still don't like it as much as the one before it)
Reel Big Fish/Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer split - Duet All Night Long (just a bunch of cover songs, but it's tons of fun.)
Battles - Mirrored

I'm listening to Help Wanted Nights for the first time now and am liking it a lot more than Album of the Year so that might end up on here after a few spins.

JohnnyNemesis

i'd forgotten that listen to your left brain came out this year, so i'd add that to my list too.

"born into this" by the cult wasn't as good as i had hoped, but still better than the useless drivel released by everyone else.

Infinity on High - Fallout Boy
Bone Pallace Ballet - Chiodos

Whoops, I missed this. I don't know if I'd say it sounds terribly different. I've always liked some of their singles, but the few times I heard album tracks I was never too thrilled with them, but I actually enjoyed most of this one.

I finally picked up the Lily Allen album last night and it's quite awesome and will probably end up on the list. The new Electric Six was not as good as Señor Smoke so I doubt it'll end up there. I'm still surprised by how solid the Puscifer album is. I'm not sure if it'll make the list or not though.

13. Neurosis - Given to the Rising

I just picked that and Pelican - City of Echoes up tonight. I've tried getting into Neurosis in the past and failed horribly but I think I like this one even though I've only made it through a couple tracks so far.

I got City of Echoes a few weeks ago. I haven't really had a huge chance to listen to it yet, though, because I've been busy. It's not bad from what I've payed attention to.

Yeah, I like it but it's not as heavy/atmospheric as I was expecting when I picked it up. A good portion of the stuff on there sounds more like mid-90s instrumental indie rock like Don Caballero than it does the other bands they get lumped in with like Isis and Neurosis.

Yeah, I've never really gotten why Pelican get lumped in with some of the bands that they do. I think some people assume that all instrumental rock music is the same.

I've finally listened to basically all the albums I planned to listen to this year. Hence,

1. Yeasayer- All Hour Cymbals
2. Minus the Bear- Planet of Ice
3. Aceyalone- Lightning Strikes
4. Café Tacuba- Sino
5. The Cooper Temple Clause- Make This Your Own
6. Shock Stars- Shock Stars EP (EPs count, right?)
7. The National- Boxer
8. Foo Fighters- Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace
9. Nas- Hip Hop is Dead
10. Band of Horses- Cease to Begin

Yeasayer > your life. And I held off listening to it until like, 4 days ago! I'm uploading that shit whether you all want it or not. What's it like? Self-described "Middle Eastern-psych-pop-snap-gospel."

This year sucked in music compared to last year. But I guess my favorite album of the year would have to be Tim Armstrong's solo CD.
