What's it about? What college? We need details, man.

It's a free-form station, so I can play whatever music I like, and can talk about whatever I want to talk about. It's OIT. (Oregon Institute of Technology)

Ugh. I was just about to post this, then decided it wouldn't be funny, rather just lame.

The best I can think of is something like "The Dain-ger Room". Puns are all I can do right now.

Obviously the correct answer is one of the following:

Tru Punx on your Radio
Tru Punx 101
Your Daily Dose of Punx

Something with Punx. Do it.

all i want to express is that you shouldn't fuck up the freedom you have with a freeform station by playing trite commercial radio shit.

I really want to get involved with the college station here and turn it back into what a college station is supposed to be, rather than just another top 40station. Unfortunatly, we have one of the biggest college stations in the country, so it's incredibly hard to get a job there.

Also, "Radio Free Dain". Cliched, but effective.

Wolfbutter

Congratulations! Since "Dain" rhymes with "ra" in "radio", you could probably just call it "Dain Radio".

Sidewinder

Why would he use Dain in real life, though?

NOFX is shitty, but they have a place on college radio, they're not that commercial.

I suggest making it up as you go. srsly. There's nothing quite lke improvising. Keeps you on your toes and stuff.

EDIT: Does this mean you've decided on a name now?

All the Dj's there say to have at least a rough layout ready.

And no, still no name.

No....although highly unprofessional, I might just have people call in with name suggestions.

Meg
01-31-2008, 01:37 PM
I wouldn't say that's unprofessional really. If anything it gets people phoning in, making them feel like they're actually a part of things and that what they think counts [whether it does or doesn't]

Also, people might listen just to hear what random names you get

1208 - 1988
Streetlight Manifesto - The Recieving End of it All
Metallica - Motorbreath

They go exactly against what Endy suggests, but those are three of some of the better songs in existence right there.

How do they go against what he says? Nobody even knows who 1208 is, Streetlight doesn't get airplay, and that Metallica song is fairly unknown outside of the band's hardcore fans.

coke_a_holic
01-31-2008, 02:07 PM
Arrogant Sons of Bitches - So Let's Go Nowhere
Bomb The Music Industry! - Side Projects Are Never Successful
Blood Brothers - Burn, Piano Island, Burn
Cap'n Jazz - In The Clear
Cursive - Art Is Hard
Desaparecidos - Mall of America
Electric Six - Rock And Roll Evacuation

I dunno, that's just scrolling through part of my iTunes and picking out bands that caught my attention that I figured fit in with the others you were listing and deciding on songs. I decided to stop at E for whatever reason.

True indeed, BUT they all fit the same mold of radio shit that he was talking about. That 1208 song, for example, may be completely unknown, but plenty of similar sounding bands are played on the radio all the time.

Your list plays it far too safe. It seems you're pandering to a certain audience. Mix it up a bit, for fuck's sake. Fine, go ahead and play 5 pop-punk songs in a row if you must, but then play some Brazilian tropicalia! Or a half-hour of droning noise! (so you can go do some drugs) Or play some ska, then follow it up with a Michael Jackson song. You don't have to be consistent, just don't be predictable.

That's what I'd do, anyway.

Agreed. I understand maybe wanting a niche audience or something, but I think people would respond more to variety.

You need:

an older Muse song
B-52s that's NOT Rock Lobster or Love Shack (52 Girls maybe?)
"Sink, Florida, Sink" by Against Me!
something by Andy's band (the Conquistadors)
"Children" by EMF
some The Hold Steady
some New Pornographers, preferably from Mass Romantic

If you're doing rap, Kanye or Wu-Tang or Run DMC are always good choices.

If you're doing metal, try some shorter Dream Theater songs, or maybe Queensryche.

Also, throw in some gay/old/old gay shit. B*Witched, Spice Girls, Scissor Sisters, ABBA and the like.

i would generally consider your list a failure, and it has nothing to do with not liking some of the music. i like a good portion of it, but it's a total waste of being on a freeform station. sure, some of the actual bands or songs might not be all over commercial radio, but they *could be*. the music is way too safe.

A good one is The Horse. That song really shows off what they're capable of.

Agree with this, though I don't expect it'll change anything, judging by how well you've ignored my advice. But I still hold out some hope that after doing a couple of similar shows, you'll get bored of the corner you've painted yourself into and start exploring some of the other options available to you.

I mean c'mon dude, it's college radio. You're not doing your job if you don't alienate your listener once in awhile.
